Tariff plans for access to the Internet, taking into account prepaid traffic

When providing a subscriber with access to the Internet, taking into account prepaid traffic, the unused volume of paid traffic included in the tariff plan is not transferred to the next billing period. Also, according to the tariff plan, taking into account the prepaid traffic "Comfort Express", in case of exceeding the volume of paid traffic included in the tariff plan, all excess traffic is paid based on the excess volume in accordance with the subparagraphs listed above. Moreover, billing for the listed sub-items is made as traffic is consumed. Why does the Internet lag

Let's simulate a hypothetical, but in fact, probably a real situation. You have a "fat" tariff plan, thanks to which you decided to plunge headlong into the IT country and its bottomless traffic. And it seems that the speed is through the roof, but the content still "does not pull." How so? I pay money, the equipment is issued by the provider - what problems can there be? To begin with, it is worth noting that operators guarantee speed only over cable. Some don't even want to take on WiFi setup. Do you want 100 Mbps everywhere? Pull the cable to your computer, laptop, tablet, smartphone, watch and so on. The reality is that no matter what provider you use, the bulk of your Internet consumers are most likely hanging on Wi-Fi. And this is where problems can arise.

So far, about the choice of routers, we have examined in detail the speed and quality characteristics of routers. In short, not every one of them is able to provide “over the air” the data transfer rate that is prescribed in your tariff plan.

It may well be that real speed Internet access via Wi-Fi is several times lower than what you pay for. The provider is not to blame for this - he will provide to the apartment required indicators. And then the home router comes into play. As practice has shown, unpleasant surprises can be not only with Wi-Fi, but also with wired Internet.

We turned to the users of the three largest Belarusian providers. One uses the services of byfly and recently switched to the "thickest" TP - "Record 200". The second one has X5 from MTS at a speed of 100 Mbps during the day. The third is an old subscriber of Atlant Telecom, which is now velcom. It has 80 Mbps. Everyone trusted the equipment provided by the providers. Let's see what we can expect in this scenario.

Test Methodology

The conditions are absolutely simple and transparent. We take a specific user, come to his house and drive Wi-Fi in direct line of sight from the router. The result obtained is compared with the speed prescribed in the contract. Just in case, we also test the speed that the router provides over the cable. We carried out the check through Speedtest, and the server was chosen to match the provider: MGTS for byfly, velcom for velcom and Mobile TeleSystems for MTS.

We took with us the Keenetic Giga KN-1010 router we bought through the Onliner catalog. The model is fresh, fast, not cheap and, in theory, should not greatly limit the speed of access to the network over the air.

200 Mbps! This should be enough today for everything, even with a margin for the distant future. According to the user, somewhere until December he was on the Record 50 new tariff, and then he saw that for 40 rubles today you can take off at space speed. Decided to try - changed the tariff plan in personal account and began to wait for a miracle.

According to the guy, he hadn’t measured the speed before, but 50 Mbps, if they were on Wi-Fi, was not enough. At the same time, almost all equipment, except for a computer, is connected to the Internet through the air. Switched to 200 Mbps, but nothing has changed. Then I decided to measure the access speed. I ran Speedtest on my computer and got 100 Mbps, that is, half as much. And it's cable!

Blame the router. An old model was installed in the apartment, the ports of which support a maximum speed of only 100 Mbps. Alas, the user did not have time to take measurements over the air: after a call with a question to Beltelecom, a team quickly arrived and installed a router with a gigabit port - HG8245H. We will test this model.

So, given: the HG8245H router, a tariff plan with an access speed of 200 Mbps and a full house of neighbors with their own access points. Just in case, we measure the speed on the cable. Almost 300 Mbps - nothing to complain about.

But with the wireless network issue. The fact is that, in theory, the HG8245H is capable of exchanging data via Wi-Fi at speeds up to 300 Mbps, but there are nuances. Firstly, never before in reality has any router been able to achieve theoretical performance. Secondly, the router can only work with networks at a frequency of 2.4 GHz. This is the same range, which, as practice shows, is usually extremely busy and is not able to provide the proper speed and stability of the connection.

The test confirms our fears. With the help of Speedtest, it was possible to accelerate to a maximum of 66 Mbps. This is almost four times less than the declared characteristics and five times behind the performance that was achieved by cable!

Will a third-party router fix the situation? Note that in the case of xPON technology, it is not so easy to take and install your own router. But you can connect it to HG8245H and use it as an access point. So, we take Keenetic Giga KN-1010, run the benchmark and…

Virtually nothing has changed. Yes, a few extra "megabits" have increased, but there is no need to talk about some kind of cardinal difference. And in one and in the other case, the cherished 200 Mbit / s is very far away. However, it is worth switching to the 5 GHz band, and the picture changes dramatically! The download speed reaches almost 300 Mbps!

Obviously, in this case, the main problem is in the range in which the router operates. Choking from the load 2.4 GHz on all fronts merged before 5 GHz.

velcom. Didn't get half of it

Here, the subscriber uses a tariff plan that offers network access speeds of 80 Mbps. Taking into account peer-to-peer traffic, we can quite count on 100 Mbps. However, a cheap and rather old TP-Link TL-WR740N router is forced to be responsible for everything. The provider's technical support clarified that at present subscribers are offered a slightly fresher model - TP-Link TL-WR840N, but more on that later.

Even the characteristics show that miracles cannot be expected from this router. The lack of gigabit Ethernet and support for the 5 GHz band, as well as a weak antenna, may not have slowed down the Internet a lot five years ago, but now the situation is different.

Let's start again with the cable connection. On the one hand, everything here is within the framework of the tariff plan - they received more than 90 Mbps instead of 80 Mbps. On the other hand, this is clearly the ceiling, because the router still falls short of peer-to-peer 100 Mbps.

With Wi-Fi, the situation is noticeably worse. About 40 Mbps for downloading is half the promised speed. The return speed is higher, but this circumstance obviously will not please the user, because the subscription fee goes for completely different indicators.

We take Keenetic again. Here it is not necessary to connect it to the operator's router - the latter can be painlessly replaced once and for all. The benefit of a more serious device is already visible with a cable connection - the coveted peer-to-peer 100 Mbps are taken.

Even work in the 2.4 GHz band gives a reason for joy. For reception, we easily take the tariff height in the form of 80 Mbps. On return, the speed is slightly lower, but this is not critical. However, with 5 GHz, the situation is even more fun. From now on, you can download content over the air at speeds above 100 Mbps, and give it away at almost 200 Mbps!

This brand has long established itself on the positive side in the Belarusian Internet services market. Its main advantage is the variety of tariff options available for connection.
