Working with the canon 1200d camera. Pros and cons

Canon 1200D is a DSLR camera especially for those who want to learn how to photograph, without anything superfluous, simple, small and budget. In general, what a beginner needs. Therefore, if you have already outgrown your soap box and want something more than blurry shots in “auto” mode, you should definitely pay attention to it.

Canon 1200D is a continuation of Canon's most budgetary DSLR line. At what, I want to note, budget - does not mean bad or not of high quality, but it does not have a rotary screen, like the 5D, but nevertheless you will take pictures no worse and the camera has 150% for this everything you need.

My general impression of the camera is positive, but there are a couple of points that I would like to avoid. Well, now in order.

Screen

The display on the camera is the most common, three-inch, not rotatable. But this is not the main thing, the display resolution upset me the most. The fact is that the display has a resolution of about 460 thousand points, for example, with the same screen size, a resolution of 921 thousand points, and if these two screens are placed side by side, the difference is striking. In general, it was not comme il faut.

Although the rest of the screen is excellent, the colors are correct and I had no more complaints about it, and if we compare it with the previous model (1100D), it became noticeably better, as well as in size (it grew from 2.7 ″ to 3 ″), so and by resolution (doubled). So maybe it's me, as the saying goes, “Galya spoiled”, but I've just lost the habit of screens on which you can distinguish pixels with the naked eye. Not very demanding users may not even notice the difference.

Matrix

The camera takes pictures with a resolution of 18 megapixels, but as we have already said more than once,. Therefore, the most important thing that you should know about your matrix is that you have an excellent sensor, the same as on more expensive models, it seems, which means that the quality of the pictures will not be inferior to them.

At medium, for example ISO2000, it seems that the noise reduction eats up the details too much, so it is advisable to turn it off completely (custom functions C.Fn-5):

I usually use the automatic in 90% of cases, only if I photograph with a flash or with a long exposure - I turn off the automatic and set the minimum so that there is no noise. Canon has one flaw in this regard, unlike Nikon, there is no way to set the minimum threshold for automatic ISO, but I hope someday Canon will fix this flaw.

Flash

He does not know how to work in, and this is rather strange, given the fact that there is such an opportunity. It seems to me that this is a special marketing ploy, where manufacturers deliberately do not allow using the command mode of the built-in flash on budget models.

Only Canon succeeded in this regard and gave such an opportunity for cameras from a line like, but Nikon does not have a command mode for the same.

Autofocus

In 1200D 9 points are available for (similar), this is more than enough for all occasions. And for beginners, a small number of AF zones is an advantage, on the contrary. it's easier to figure out what you are focusing on and, if necessary, you can switch faster.

In most cases, you will use automatic focus area selection, and if you want to quickly and without taking your eyes off the viewfinder, select a focus point, you need to press the “zoom” button under your thumb and turn the wheel or select the desired focus area using the joystick.

Control

I would say the camera is just the perfect control for a beginner. There is nothing superfluous here, both in the menu and among the analog buttons. Management is intuitive, and almost all important functions are placed on analog buttons, respectively, there is no need for programmable buttons at all.

Correctionlens aberration

The 1200D is able to (automatically illuminates dark corners when the aperture is closed), but for some reason it does not know how to correct color aberration. I am already silent about automatic correction, this is a sore point for all Canon.

Kit lens

I recommend taking a camera with an 18-55 IS II lens, quite sharp and small, for a start. When you already understand which type of shooting is more interesting for you, then you need to buy an additional lens, spend all your money at once - we do not recommend it, because maybe your priorities will change or the desire to take pictures will disappear altogether.

Is there some more important point, if you decide to shoot video with a whale lens, then it is better to immediately turn off autofocus and focus manually. The camera buzzes painfully loudly during autofocus, which is then strongly audible in the video.

By the way, the 1200D's shutter sound is also quite loud, if you compare it with the D3300, there is nothing wrong with that, but it will be difficult to quietly remove it.

Live view works great, focuses very accurately, even in poor lighting (there was a problem with this), albeit rather slowly.

What we liked:

  • low price (the whale version with 18-55 IS is almost 20-30% cheaper than the whale version);
  • excellent sensor, which is used on more expensive models;
  • low noise at high ISO;
  • simple controls, which is very important for novice photographers;
  • small size (130 x 100 x 78 mm);
  • small weight (480 g).

What seemed strange:

  • there is no way to correct color aberration.

What did not like:

  • a low-resolution display on which pixels are visible;
  • there is no command mode for the built-in flash.

What to buy for the Canon 1200D:

  • memory of the last series;

Canon EOS 1200D - lightweight and compact camera with a laconic design.

Canon 1200D dimensions - 129.6 × 99.7 × 77.9 mm, weight (body) - 480 grams. Compared to its predecessor, the Canon 1100D, appearance Canon 1200D has undergone significant changes. The monitor of the new model has become larger, the buttons have shifted and become more compact. The Live View button has moved closer to the viewfinder, and the speaker has moved from the rear to the top. The control keys on the rear panel are flat and barely protrude from the body, which is why they are poorly perceived to the touch. Unlike its predecessor, the Canon 1200D has rubberized grip and thumb rest for a comfortable grip.

On the left edge of the camera there are connectors: USB port (with PAL / NTSC video output), HDMI mini-output and remote control. At the bottom there is a thread for a tripod pad and a joint compartment for the memory card and battery. When using a tripod, access to them will be difficult, and this is a minus in this case.

In terms of build quality, the Canon EOS 1200D has performed well for SLR camera entry level.

The camera runs on a proprietary LP-E10 battery. When tested according to CIPA standards (a method for measuring the autonomy of a device for cameras), it is enough for 500 shots. By the way, the hero of the review is significantly inferior in autonomy to the Canon 1100D, the battery of which was enough for 750 shots.

Functional

The Canon EOS 1200D has all the basic functions a beginner needs to shoot (Live View, large on-screen guides, customizable picture styles), but there are no advanced features on this model.

Canon 1200D offers its users a wide range of shooting modes. Creative Zone Modes (Manual Tuning) give amateur photographers the ability to control settings on their own. So, here you can choose the settings for shutter speed, aperture, white balance and ISO (in the range 100-6400 with an extension to 12800). This includes the following modes:

  • "Programming machine" (P)
  • Shutter Priority (Tv)
  • Aperture Priority (Av)
  • « Manual mode"(M).

In Basic Zone modes (automatic modes), the user is already limited in the choice of settings, which at the same time simplifies the process of photographing. All you have to do is select the scenario you want to use and the Canon 1200D will optimize the shooting parameters by itself.

This includes:

  • Scene Intelligent Auto, analyzes the scene and independently selects the best settings for the frame
  • "Flash off mode"
  • Creative Auto (CA)
  • "Portrait"
  • "Landscape"
  • "Macro"
  • "Sport"
  • "Night portrait".

The Canon 1200D offers a choice of seven Picture Styles: Auto, Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful, Monochrome, and three Custom. Adjustments can be made for sharpness, contrast, saturation, and hue.

The Auto Luminance function programmatically processes the contrast and brightness of a photo and is used to obtain a more balanced image. It includes the following modes - "no correction", "low", "standard" and "strong" processing levels.

The camera menu is convenient and familiar to amateur photographers familiar with Canon cameras. For those who use the camera of this company for the first time, it will not be difficult to master it, because it is simple and intuitive.

The Canon 1200D is equipped with a built-in flash with a guide number of 9.2 (a conventional number describing flash output) with a focal length of up to 17 mm. The following modes can be selected on the camera for adjusting the flash:

  • "Auto"
  • "Manual"
  • Red-eye reduction.

External flash units can be attached using a hot shoe mounted on the top panel.

Live View is useful for shooting in low light conditions or when using the viewfinder is difficult. In this mode, the user can track the subject while looking directly at the camera monitor. In Live View, you can display a histogram (a graph that displays the number of pixels with a specific brightness value) on the screen, but there is no virtual horizon in this mode.

The focusing module in the Canon 1200D is the same as in the Canon 600D - 9-point, with one cross-shaped point in the middle.

In viewing mode, there are four possible basic options display:

  • clean frame
  • overlay frame brief information
  • reduced frame with shooting parameters and brightness histogram
  • reduced frame with important parameters and extended histogram.

A quick and easy way to sort your photos for viewing on your computer can use the rating function, which you can use to rate a photo on a five-star scale.

The finished photos can be processed directly on the camera using a standard set of filters, the Canon 1200D has five of them: "Grainy Black and White", "Soft Focus", "Toy Camera Effect", "Fisheye Effect", "Miniature Effect". The intensity of each is adjusted in several levels.

For aspiring photographers, the Canon EOS 1200D Assistant is also a great bonus, designed specifically for getting to know your camera. With its help, the user will be able to learn not only the basic techniques of working with the model, but also get acquainted with the basics of photography. True, only owners of devices on operating systems Android and iOS.

As with the Canon 600D, the Canon 1200D comes with the standard entry-level Canon EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II lens, designed specifically for cameras with a crop factor of 1.6. Its advantages include a thread for light filters of 58 mm (the most common diameter) and the presence of an optical stabilizer. Minus - the front lens rotates when focusing on focus, which makes it difficult to use some light filters.

Photo quality

Photo quality is one of the most important camera parameters. The Canon 1200D is responsible for this with an 18-megapixel APS-C matrix, which allows you to capture high-quality detailed images.

We present the results of Canon EOS 1200D photo quality tests: noise, chromatic aberration, peripheral illumination correction, night shooting, auto brightness correction and highlight priority.

Noises(image distortion due to technical features camera matrix). Test shots were captured by Photographyblog experts with sensitivity in the range of ISO 100-3200. Tests at greater value ISOs were not carried out because with them, entry-level cameras always give a good result. Snapshots show noise levels for each ISO setting, JPEG on the left and RAW on the right. Overall, the noise level of the EOS 1200D is acceptable.

Chromatic aberration(image distortions introduced by the optical system of the lens: reduced clarity, the appearance of colored halos). In our tests, the EF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS showed a decent level of chromatic aberration. The photos show the worst results for this lens.

Night shooting. A maximum shutter speed of 30 seconds and a Bulb mode designed for longer exposures is great news for all night photography enthusiasts.

"Priority of lights" can be set in the Custom Function menu (C.Fn-6). This function is useful when photographing scenes in which light shades are combined with a dark background. The function justifies its purpose well.

Peripheral illumination correction. The peripheral illumination correction (or "vignetting correction") function is designed to correct dark corners at the edges of the frame, their appearance is due to the laws of optics and the design of the lens.

Video quality

The Canon EOS 1200D offers a variety of frame rates, offering a choice of 24, 25 or 30 fps when recording Full HD video clips, and 50 or 60 fps when shooting at 720p (HD). The Canon 1200D has monaural sound recording when shooting video, and there is no way to connect an external microphone.

Ergonomics and design

The camera is firmly knocked down, is made of soft-touch matte rough plastic and fits quite well in the hand. Subjectively, the size is medium-universal, suitable for almost everyone. For owners of a large brush, the little finger will hang a little - this is a typical drawback of all initial models of DSLRs.

The camera display is improved over its predecessor, the EOS 1100D. The increased diagonal allows for more comfortable viewing of photos, the resolution is not too high, but sufficient for most situations. The viewing angles are good.

The optical viewfinder is also quite convenient for sighting. Its design uses a penta mirror, not a pentaprism, which makes the design of the camera cheaper, but at the same time practically does not affect the convenience of sight. The manufacturer saved on the eye proximity sensor, but used a budget "half measure" - when you press the shutter button, the display turns off. It is also traditionally available with a diopter adjustment wheel.

Contrary to the newfangled trends, the camera is charged in the old fashioned way - I took out the battery, inserted it into the charger and connected it to the network. No extra charging from the USB cable. But you can safely work with several batteries: we charge one, remove the other.

Functionality

The matrix in the EOS 1200D has been "pumped up" - the resolution has increased from 12 to 18 megapixels compared to the previous model. The detail of the pictures should grow, which is great. In addition, it is believed that the sensor is the same as in the EOS 700D - with a high enough image quality for an amateur camera.

At Prophotos, we are deeply convinced that photography becomes real only after it is printed on paper.

Don't let your photos lie in your computer's memory year after year. Only material photographs have real value - hanging on your wall or pasted into your family album.

To print images with this camera, we recommend multifunction device Canon PIXMA MG5740. This inexpensive model is equipped with 5 separate ink tanks. It supports paper sizes up to A4 and allows you to use a variety of media (from matte to glossy paper), so you can choose the optimal texture for the nature of your shot.

Canon PIXMA MG5740 is equipped with a Wi-Fi interface: you can connect to local network or directly to the camera. Also Wi-Fi module allows you to print documents from mobile devices.

Turning on the device is subjectively rather slow, in about one and a half seconds - not so little ... But let's not forget that this is not a top segment, not an average, but an elementary class SLR cameras... In addition, it is possible that the performance will increase in production samples.

The autofocus in the camera is built according to the phase scheme, it works as expected quickly and accurately. But in Live View mode, you can focus on the contrast principle: a little slower, but with a lively picture on the screen.

The shutter sound is barely audible, unlike when the mirror is raised. The shutter lag is noticeable in food, but still present.

The camera's rate of fire is about 3 frames per second. In all honesty, I will say that this is enough for most amateur photographers.

The DIGIC 4 processor is, in principle, sufficient for all operations, and the slowdown is noticeable only when viewing footage - during zooming and viewing details. However, here the matter may not even be in the processor, but in the flash drive.

Interface and control

The control interface of the Canon EOS 1200D does not give rise to any particular complaints, you get used to it quickly. Most of the functions and control responses are quite intuitive, especially for those who have dealt with Canon DSLR cameras. And after playing with the camera for about 15 minutes, you can no longer go into the instructions.

In addition to standard PASM modes, automatic modes are available, selection of presets for various scenes and video recording. In the "automatic" camera shoots well, and for novice amateur photographers this will be a definite plus.

Incidentally, Canon has created a free camera reference guide for aspiring amateur photographers as an app for popular mobile platforms. It is called Canon EOS Companion. It is assumed that the user can always have at hand in the smartphone such an application that will help find answers to questions about camera control, technical nuances and shooting examples.

The application is still only in English, but let's hope that by the start of sales of the Canon EOS 1200D camera, the "companion" will acquire Russian. You can change certain parameters in the Canon EOS 12000D both using separate buttons and in the quick on-screen menu. The Q button is used to change a number of photo options directly on the screen. The setting wheel, which is located next to the shutter release button, allows you to change the shooting settings depending on the mode.

The button for raising the mirror and displaying the picture in the Live View mode works when taking a photo. If you switch to the video recording mode using the PASM regulator, it will serve to start video recording.

Viewing the footage is straightforward. You can change the scale using the corresponding buttons next to your thumb, and switch between frames using the buttons on the NaviPad. The control wheel on the top panel in playback mode allows you to jump every 10 frames.

What did not like

the price is absolutely overpriced. If the 1100d is completely worth its money, and is an ideal ratio of price, quality and functionality, then 1200d is not competitive, since analogues from other companies are much cheaper. And for almost the same price, you can get the 600d, which has both a swivel screen and a more powerful flash. otherwise identical to 1200d.

What we liked

Compared to the 1100d, this camera has only two pluses - the body is more interesting and light, due to the materials, and the higher resolution, which, however, is also a controversial plus.

What did not like

no dust and moisture protection

What we liked

The battery holds up well, the picture is optimal, for beginners it is generally normal

What did not like

Modest technical characteristics in the form of not excellent, but just good screen resolution or non-record burst shooting is heard by everyone. The disadvantage here is rather that Canon, having stuffed the filling from the previous generations of the xxxD series into the device, did not stuff similar characteristics there, reducing them a little more than it should have. As a result, a slightly lighter, both in technical and weight and size terms, analog of the 550D came out.
The absence of rotary and top screens, phase sensors on the matrix, a multitude of cross-type autofocus points and stereo sound are just natural costs of the budget, which turns out to be $ 600 for a kit from Canon, instead of the typical $ 1000.
Old stuffing? Perhaps yes. Anyone would like Canon to put in a new sensor and processor at once, and then - goodbye to budget. In general, ahead for the 700 / 70D, where all this is.
If you look back, then the 18MPix and the Digic 4 processor, which are present here, were once a novelty too, like today 20-22 MPix and Digic 5 + ... And even earlier there were 10 or 12 Mpix and the Digic III processor. And after all they filmed somehow ... filmed normally.
Or the same Nikon D3300 at a similar price, of course, looks prettier in terms of characteristics, but there is a DSLR, here it is more important how it lies in the hand, is pressed and works in action.
Other slow AFs in Live-view and the absence of AF-assist lamps are also present here, but, in fairness, are common to the entire line of Canon amateur DSLRs, up to the 60D.
Many also consider the 18 Mpix sensor to be worse in noise than the 12 Mpix in the previous 1100D. In fact, the noises are the same there, because the sensor is of the next generation, but the ability to suppress the same noises, thanks to the larger number of pixels, is higher.
The real drawbacks are the lack of software chromaticity correction (the costs of the "old" processor) and panoramic shooting, as well as the buzzing autofocus motor in video mode. The rest can hardly be called disadvantages. Even 3fps burst shooting proved to be quite nimble in the case.

What we liked

Matrix APS-C 18 MPix as in older models (650/700 / 60D). Do not be ashamed in front of soap dishes, and the weight of the files is not off scale. Optimum. Working ISO up to 1600 inclusive. Above, the noise is already noticeable, but even at 6400 images as snapshots, the increase in noise is not significant. Comparable to Canon's current APS-C. Autonomy, honest 500 shots on a charge. With a blinking battery, you can take at least a couple of dozen pictures. None of the necessary functions have been cut back. Bright screen at night and no proximity sensor? It is replaced by the Disp button, nothing has been forgotten here. The difference from the 1100th model is noticeable in better side, now you can't tell by sight that the device is cheap. The Digic 4 processor is not bad, the camera is responsive, no brakes were noticed at all. The time between turning on the ON lever and the display is about 1.5 seconds, but the camera itself turns on in a split second: you can immediately press the shutter button and take a picture. A convenient and laconic-strict menu, as in all other Canon DSLRs, is not like the acidic one in budget Nikons and Pentaxes. The screen rigidly built into the case is also a plus, after all, the monolithic structure. It should be noted that there is a similar solution in professional cameras. You can also draw an analogy in phones: candy bar vs slider / clamshell. Reliability and nothing more. The same with the lens. The whale is compact and a light weight... In everyday life, this is more important than the pretentiousness of the red rims of the L-series. The lens, noticeably better than the whale, will still have to be looked for, and naturally to the detriment of weight, size ... and price too. More or less interesting here is 18-135 STM. Or telephoto 55-250 mm, sharp throughout the entire working range. Or a 40mm fix that turns your DSLR into a real compact. Others, like the 18-85, differ in focal range rather than quality ... less chromaticism, but less sharpness. Need quality? look at the 17-55 lens, which costs absolutely other money. Or 50 ... 105 mm fixings. These are Canon lenses, the situation with Tamrons and Sigmas is similar: budget lenses give a wider focal range, and sharp ones are already at a serious price.

How long does a camera generally live? Usually - several years, but many manufacturers manage to shake up the entire the lineup once a year or two - to maintain interest. Only flagship cameras are rarely updated - a lot of money is invested in their development, but the sales volume is significantly less than that of budget DSLRs: it is often financially unprofitable to release new "best-of-the-best" cameras.

But inexpensive SLR cameras are updated quite quickly. For example, the three thousandth Nikon family has been replenished three times over the past five years, and there are four devices in the series (D3000, D3100, D3200 and recently reviewed D3300). Pentax is not far behind, which has twice updated its budget line over the past two years, at the same time expanding it. What about Canon? This manufacturer has the cheapest DSLR with a swivel screen updated almost once a year, but the Canon EOS 1100D had to wait for three whole years. Generally, life cycle the cheapest Canon DSLRs were no less than the flagship products.

However, for the most affordable Canon series, such a long wait for an update has already become the norm, because the EOS 1000D also had to wait about three years... So what has changed over such a long period of time? The appearance of the novelty has undergone only cosmetic changes, the resolution of the images has increased from 12 to 18 megapixels, and the display has grown both physically - by 0.3 inches, and in terms of resolution - from 230 thousand to 460 thousand pixels. A Full HD video shooting mode has also been added, because in modern conditions without it already in any way. Otherwise, at first glance, the Canon EOS 1200D does not differ from its predecessor: the same viewfinder, the same battery, the same number of presets for white balance and focus points, and the metering module with the processor are similar. Old camera in slightly updated packaging? Even so, experience dictates that sometimes a good redesign of the firmware can make a big difference in a camera.

The scope of delivery is quite standard - a shoulder strap, a charger, a battery, a data cable, a bayonet cover, a removable eyecup, a user manual, a couple of information brochures, and two CDs, one of which contains software and the second is a multilingual user manual. The "whale" complete set, which came to us for testing, also includes Canon lens EF-S 18-55 mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS II.

⇡ Appearance

As already noted, outwardly, the Canon EOS 1200D is quite similar to its predecessor: the overall dimensions are similar to a tenth of a millimeter, and the weight has become only 15 grams less. Of course, a heavy "carcass" is a kind of stabilizer when shooting, but in the case of the most affordable DSLRs, which are often used as a camera for every day, it is still more important to have a low weight, and not additional stabilization. However, the novelty is not the lightest DSLR even in its class, because the Nikon D3300 weighs 50 grams less. The camera is very comfortable in the hand, and, which cannot but rejoice, the cheapest Canon DSLRs finally have rubber pads on the grip and on the thumb rest on the back side, thanks to which the EOS 1200D, unlike its predecessor, is no longer strives to slip out of hands. In addition, the surface of the body panels is now rough, and not smooth, as in the 1000D and 1100D models, so the novelty looks more expensive than its predecessors.

However, it cannot be said that this is a breakthrough in the field of budget cameras, because the three thousandth Nikon family, as well as budget Sony and Pentax DSLRs, pleased only with rough plastic, and the manufacturers did not forget about rubber pads. Rather, Canon has finally caught up with the competition in this regard. However, the novelty did not get rid of some generic problems, remaining the only modern DSLR with memory cards installed under one cover with a battery. Why is not clear. But the build quality is high, so there is practically nothing to complain about.

At the front there is a metal mount, a built-in monaural microphone, and a self-timer indication lamp.

On the back, the layout of the various elements is generally preserved, although the shape of the keys has been slightly changed. Most of the rear surface, of course, is occupied by the display, above which there is a viewfinder with a diopter adjustment, but without a proximity sensor. The right side is occupied by the keys, the location of which has practically not changed - a slight castling was performed only with the keys for exposure compensation and switching to the LiveView mode. From a subjective point of view, a very successful castling. Although there is something to complain about. For example, the keys for changing the display mode, as well as for switching to the view mode, are shifted a little closer to the screen, which is why they are not as convenient to press as in the EOS 1100D. Although this is again an exclusively subjective assessment.

Above is a lifting flash with a "hot shoe" at the base. To the left of it, only the system speaker is visible, and to the right is the operating mode selection dial, supplemented by the power lever, the shutter button, the command dial, and the button electronic lock flash.

At the bottom there is a connector for mounting on a tripod, as well as a door that hides the compartments for the battery and memory card - when mounting the camera on a tripod, it is impossible to get to the card. This could be tolerated if the subject had a built-in Wi-Fi module, but it does not. In general, once again we have to admit that Canon with perseverance worthy of better application, continues to step on the same rake.

The left side surface is empty, on the right, under the rubber flap, are hidden connectors for connecting USB / AV and HDMI cables, as well as a connector for connecting a wired remote control.
