The fantasy of designers, which has already manifested itself in literally all types of technology, stubbornly does not affect the world of printers and MFPs. Still, after all, most often MFPs are a thing designed for large and small offices, which do not need a breathtaking design and insane construction - if only it is functional, convenient and cost adequate. Therefore, there is no point in evaluating the Samsung SCX-4650N MFP in terms of design. Its utilitarian appearance will be appropriate everywhere - in the office (first of all), and at home in the work area. The body is made of light gray plastic, there are slots on the sides of the device (for ease of cooling).

The front and rear panels are devoid of slots. The front of the printer contains a two-line LCD control panel and a 250-sheet cassette tray. It ejects paper into the area above the tray.

The control panel has two indicator lights and 12 keys. Among them - a button for economical printing (I believe that Samsung now equips all its printers and MFPs with it), a special button for copying certificates - the convenience of this solution will be appreciated by any user who at least once needed to make a copy of his passport, for example, the button allows you to place 2 copied pages on one sheet without shifting the sheet of paper; in addition to them - a button for adjusting the brightness of prints, a key for selecting a location to save a scanned file, a power button, start and cancel operations and a block for navigating through the printer settings (here you can configure the network connection, menu language and a number of other functions). In general, any person who is far from technology can master all the control skills of the Samsung SCX-4650N on the first try, without ever losing consciousness from the fact that “oh, what is he doing, I didn’t press that.”

The power connector, USB and network connector are hidden in a recess on the back of the printer. Above them, a cartridge is located behind a special cover. Given that all four inhabitants of the rear panel are not often used (the cartridge resource should be enough, according to the information on the manufacturer's website, to produce 2.5 thousand standard prints ( comes with 1000 page starter cartridge), for a home or small office this will be enough for a long time, and for active use in a large Samsung The SCX-4650N is not suitable, as the recommendation for its monthly use is 12 thousand pages).

For complete happiness, the device lacks only an automatic duplex - for the same money, you can already find an MFP in which it is (although, frankly, there are few options). Otherwise, using the printer is more than convenient - the control panel is well made, all the elements are conveniently placed on the body. And getting started with it is as easy as shelling pears.

Beginning of work

In the conditions of our editorial office, the MFP instantly entered into work with my computer when connected via USB, without tedious settings, installing applications, a specially trained shaman with a tambourine. The same thing happened when connecting through the network. His fellow tribesman, Samsung ML-2955ND, for example, first installed the drivers for a long time and painfully, and only then was he ready to go. Moreover, without any additional manipulation, the Samsung SCX-4650N printed a document from the MacBook when connected to the network. Before that, he only asked whether to print in economy mode. Our secretary sighed with envy when she heard about this behavior of MFPs.

Installing the Samsung Easy Printer Manager application on the computer added the ability to monitor toner supplies. It only provides this information if the device is connected via USB. With a network connection, there is no information about the status of the MFP.

Samsung MobilePrint App

Some time ago, Samsung released the MobilePrint App for mobile printing from Android and iOS devices (and for Windows Phone it is eloquently not available, despite the fact that smartphones on this platform are also produced by the corporation). A list of supported printers can be found, for example, on Google Play. And the SCX-4650N is one of them.

The process of printing and scanning with the MobilePrint App is so simple that it is difficult to exaggerate the advantages of the application. In the screenshots in the gallery below, you can see how the process of preparing documents is going on. For the mobile device to detect the MFP, they must be connected to the same network. Search and identification takes a few seconds. When the device is connected, the Print or Scan button (the application does not yet support Russian), depending on the operation being performed, turns green. This means that the process can be started. But if at the same time the MFP is connected via a USB port to a computer, then it will not work to connect to it from a smartphone or tablet.

Perhaps the only (albeit relative, because this function will hardly be in demand when printing from mobile devices) drawback of the application is that it does not allow printing individual pages of the document - all or nothing. That is, you will not be able to print the 5 necessary pages of a hefty document. Otherwise, it won me over with its simplicity and functionality. After all, with it, any file stored on a mobile device, in an account on Twitter or Facebook, in mail or just the necessary page of the site can be printed without a computer, and any document can be scanned and sent to mobile device in a matter of seconds, which will be especially valuable when you are in a hurry for an important meeting, for which you did not have time to prepare earlier). And the multi-platform nature of this MFP is, in my opinion, its key advantage.

In work

The maximum resolution of the printer when printing is 1200 dpi (when copying - 600 dpi). Sealed at maximum resolution we read the text starting from 2 pt ( Times New Roman), in bold - from 3 pt. Photo in high definition looks just fine. I'll show you this in the video.

Printer print speed is relatively slow. According to the declared characteristics - up to 10 seconds is required for the device to produce the first print. The print speed (again, in accordance with the declared characteristics) is 24 pages per minute. I sent a 208-page document to print (two-sided, not in economy mode). The first print saw the light in 7-8 seconds. All pages (while turning them manually, the stopwatch was paused) appeared in almost 9 minutes. The printer stopped for a few seconds every 100 pages. Thus, there were two pauses - when printing odd and even pages. And it took about 2.5 seconds to print each page, that is, the speed in the end was exactly the declared 24 pages per minute.

When printing a 208-page document, I also measured toner consumption using the data displayed in the Easy Printer Manager application. The process started at 94% (see the screenshot in this review two sections above). And when it ended, the app showed 80%. Let me remind you that the printing took place in the usual, not economical mode. During this time, 14% of the toner was consumed. That is, its stock in normal printing text documents enough for about 1,500 pages. The declared 2500 is obviously an indicator for economical printing (or a high-capacity cartridge, in the marketing tricks of Samsung, sometimes the devil himself will break his leg).

As a result, the Samsung SCX-4650N MFP can be called an excellent choice for a small but modern office where many employees use laptops and also smartphones. An office in which the need for printing is low, but from time to time it arises for all employees. Connectors for power supply, local area network (Ethernet) and computer (USB 2.0) are located on the rear panel.

As a copier, the SCX-4650N offers a standard set of features. The control panel sets the number of copies (from 1 to 99) and density, the original can be placed directly on the scanner glass or sent through the automatic document feeder (its capacity is up to 40 sheets). Scaling is performed in the range of 25-400%, there is a document copying mode, in which up to four different scans are automatically placed on one sheet.

It takes about a quarter of a minute to scan an A4 page in copier mode, then the machine can print copies at a speed of about 24 sheets per minute. The difference in scanning speed between manual and automatic feeding is not felt, of course, if you do not take into account the time it takes for the operator to change the original.

The scanner pressure unit rises about 4 cm above the glass to handle thick originals such as books.

Research into the capabilities of the SCX-4650N showed that the device confidently copes with fonts of 2 points, both for the lettering parallel to the sides of the sheet and for the inscription tilted at an angle of 45º. When printing "inversion" - white text against a black background, the normal result is 4 points regardless of the slant and type of font. A low-contrast, non-tilted typeface reads at 3 points. The gradient is smooth, without obvious traces of posterization and stripes. Lines with a thickness of 1 point are transmitted flawlessly regardless of the slope, half-point lines, when close, give interference distortion.

The capacity of the tray for automatic feeding is 250 sheets. If the area of coverage of the page with toner is 5%, then the cartridge will have to be replaced after ten full loads of paper: the manufacturer indicates a figure of about 2500 prints.

A manual feed tray is provided for printing on envelopes or other media.

The Samsung SCX-4650N MFP has several technologies to save paper, toner and energy. The corresponding mode is activated on the control panel by pressing one button or activated from the driver. With this model of use, the amount of toner applied to the paper is reduced, several pages of a document can be placed on one sheet, it is also possible not to print images if text is important (and vice versa), or convert the images into a kind of pencil sketches - it is still clear what is depicted, but much less toner is required. For those looking to save on printing drafts, there is an option to print bold as normal and replace black letters with gray.

When sending a print job, you can use Samsung's proprietary Easy Eco Driver. It is an easy-to-use and intuitive tool for setting savings parameters. There is no need to choose the same options every time - it is enough to save a couple of frequently used sets as presets and call them up as needed.

IFIs Samsung SCX-4650N provides flexible network monitoring and management capabilities. SyncThru's built-in Web server allows you to remotely track critical metrics such as toner remaining, paper size settings, and machine usage such as prints and scans. Naturally, all parameters and settings are displayed and can be changed by logging in with the administrator password. The session, if necessary, will be active for up to 30 minutes and there are only three or five attempts to guess the password.

Samsung SCX-4650N even changes its firmware via the Internet: just download the appropriate file and run the update wizard. The device supports remote reboot.

Naturally, you can perform the initial setup through the menu on the device itself, but it is more convenient to do this through graphical interface on the computer.

IFIs Samsung SCX-4650N works in the Google Cloud Print system. After a simple adding procedure (requires a Google account), you can print to it from anywhere via the Internet and from almost any device, including tablets and smartphones. While the service is in beta testing, there is no charge for using it. You can share the printer with anyone with a Web link to it, or you can limit the number of users. Also given maximum amount pages that will be printed in a day, or the limit is not set at all.

Before sending to print, you can select the number of copies, placement on a sheet (portrait or landscape), resolution, and even the source of paper supply.

You don't need a computer to use the SCX-4650N with Google Cloud Print, just plug the MFP into local area network with Internet access. When connected to a PC via the USB interface, it is recognized by the system and can be used either through a proprietary utility or from an application that supports WIA or TWAIN interfaces. Optical resolution 600 dpi, software interpolation up to 4800 dpi possible.

When connected via a LAN, the SCX-4650N's capabilities are enhanced as you can initiate scans from either a PC or a device. Working with a PC is the same for both connection methods.

Starting a scan from the SCX-4650N is preceded by a series of steps. Through the menu of the device, you need to select the computer on which the result will be saved and the folder on it, as well as the parameters - color, resolution, format. All of these operations are performed on a two-line matrix monochrome LCD with just a few key presses. If the number of registered computers (a simple preparatory operation performed by the system administrator once) is small, then enumerating them is not burdensome, but when buying, it should be borne in mind that MFP Samsung SCX-4650N targeted at small working groups.
