The best business school in Eastern Europe. GSOM SPbU: how to get there? Reviews Institute Higher School of Management St. Petersburg State University

Creation project Graduate School of Management (GSOM) of St. Petersburg State University was initiated in 2005 as an integral part of the priority national project (PNP) "Education". The goal of the GSOM SPbU project is to create a world-class domestic business school to train the national managerial elite, designed to ensure Russia's high international competitiveness in the economy of the 21st century. According to the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of April 25, 2006 No. 576-r, GSOM is created on the basis of the Faculty of Management of St. Petersburg State University as a structural unit of the University. The Faculty of Management of St Petersburg University was established in 1993 as the first Russian business school in the status of a faculty of the leading classical university in the country and started with 33 undergraduate students and 4 full-time teachers. The faculty has developed rapidly due to three key competitive differences:

  1. adherence to the “university business school” model and compliance with the high academic reputation of St Petersburg University;
  2. initial focus on international standards of business education: the faculty was created in a strategic partnership with the business school. Haas University of California in Berkeley - one of the leading in the world;
  3. strong emphasis on the development of corporate relations: already in 1993, an international Board of Trustees of the faculty was created (the first of its kind in Russian business education), which for the first 10 years was led by J. I. Pepper, General Manager of Procter & Gamble.

Over the 15-year period of development, dynamic growth has been demonstrated: in 2008, the number of students exceeded 1300 people, and the Association of its graduates had 3000 professional managers. In many aspects - content and organization educational process, the development of scientific research in the field of management, the scope and level of internationalization and corporate relations - the faculty has become one of the recognized leaders in the modernization of university education in Russia. Here, in 1999, the country's first English-language master's program in management in the European ECTS standard was opened, undergraduate, MBA and postgraduate programs were successfully developed, two leading scientific journals were published (“ Russian magazine Management” and “Herald of St. Petersburg State University. Series “Management”), since 1994 a highly professional Career Center has been operating, and in 2006 the faculty was accepted as the only representative of Russia in the Community of European Schools of Management.

high school management was organized (in the status of a faculty of St. Petersburg State University) in early 2007 through the transformation by merging three structural divisions of the University - the Faculty of Management, the Special Faculty for Retraining Personnel in Management and the Research Institute of Management. To create a GSOM campus by the Presidential Administration Russian Federation The Palace and Park Ensemble (DPA) "Mikhailovskaya Dacha" was transferred to St. Petersburg State University, where on November 29, 2006 a solemn ceremony of laying the first stone of the campus was held with the participation of the President of Russia V.V. Putin. The GSOM Board of Trustees is headed by Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of Russia S. B. Ivanov, and includes the heads of 20 leading Russian and international companies.

Educational programs

In 2008, GSOM SPbU recruited for three educational diploma programs:

Dual Degree Executive MBA in English. A joint program with the Higher Commercial School of Paris (HEC Paris) on a "dual diploma" model lasting 18 months consists of 12 modules plus one of two elective modules, which are held in St. Petersburg, Paris, USA, Belgium and in one of the Asian countries . Graduates of the program will receive two diplomas: the state diploma "Master of Business Administration", which is issued by the Graduate School of Management of St. Petersburg State University, and the diploma "Executive Master of Business Administration" from the HEC Paris Business School and the French Ministry of Education.

Executive MBA in Russian. The two-calendar-year modular program consists of 14 core courses covering all areas of modern management without specialization by industry, as well as 16 elective courses in accordance with professional and personal interests. After the first academic year, a one-week traveling training module is held in one of the European business schools. Graduates of the program receive a state diploma "Master of Business Administration".

The concept and stages of development of GSOM SPbU

The general concept and stages of creation and development of GSOM SPbU were discussed and approved by the Academic Council of SPbU and the Board of Trustees of GSOM SPbU (Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation S. B. Ivanov). The creation and development of GSOM SPbU as a world-class Russian business school is planned to be carried out in three stages. Stage I (2007-2010) - "stage of formation": completion of the formation of a portfolio of educational programs and their launch; obtaining the first international accreditation of GSOM programs; opening of the first phase of the campus; Stage II (2011-2014) - "growth stage": obtaining and/or confirmation of all three major international institutional accreditations (EQUIS, AACSB, AMBA); expansion of programs (primarily MBA and EMBA); transformation of GSOM into an internationally recognized center for scientific research in the field of management; Stage III (since 2015) - "maturity stage": strengthening the international competitiveness of GSOM and entering the rankings of the leading business schools in Europe and the world.

Students of GSOM SPbSU

Currently, about 1,300 people are studying at GSOM diploma programs, including about 900 in first higher education programs, more than 100 in master's programs, 250 in Executive MBA and professional retraining programs, and about 50 in postgraduate studies. The main "points of growth" in the coming years will be the MBA / EMBA and master's programs (implemented entirely in the European ECTS standard). Today, GSOM employs 70 full-time teachers, 2/3 of whom have successful experience in teaching in English in Master's and EMBA programs at GSOM and abroad. By 2015, 1800 students will study at the GSOM at the same time, 1000 of them will be in post-bachelor's programs. The number of full-time teachers will increase by 2012 to 90-100, and at least 30% of students and teachers of GSOM will be foreign.

International accreditations, connections and programs of GSOM SPbU

Implemented in 2006-2007 as part of the PNP "Education", the system of measures for the creation and development of GSOM SPbU (taking into account the potential of the Faculty of Management of SPbU accumulated over 1993-2006) has made it possible by now to form a solid foundation for the further successful development of GSOM according to the model of "university business schools” and get serious international recognition of the project. Currently, GSOM is the only representative of the Russian Federation in the Community of European Management Schools (CEMS), which admits leading business schools in Europe based on an external audit of their master's programs. In 2007, other key GSOM programs also successfully passed the procedures of international accreditation under the AMBA system (EMBA program) and EPAS (bachelor's program). The Association of MBAs (AMBA) was founded in the UK in 1967. Its goals are to support and promote postgraduate programs and ensure their quality. The Association promotes the interaction of business schools, potential MBA students studying at MBA programs, alumni programs, and employers. The Executive MBA program at GSOM SPbU was tested by the international accreditation commission AMBA at the end of 2007. The European Foundation for Management Development Programs Accreditation System (EPAS) emerged in 2005 in response to the emerging need for pan-European and global program accreditation, especially under the influence of the Bologna reform in Europe. EPAS accreditation awards high quality degree programs (from bachelor's to doctoral degrees) that have a strong international focus. The accreditation program places great emphasis on 3 points: high quality education in general, high degree internationalization, close ties with business. At the end of 2007, GSOM SPbU Bachelor's programs were tested by the international accreditation commission EPAS. According to the decision of EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development) and the EPAS Accreditation Commission dated April 23, 2008, the Bachelor's Program of the Graduate School of Management of St. Petersburg State University received EPAS accreditation.

GSOM is an institutional member of all major international professional associations of business schools: the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), the European Academy of Business in Society (EABiS), the Global Responsible Leaders Development Initiative (GRLI). In October 2007, GSOM (the only Russian business school) was accepted as a candidate for the largest association of the world's leading business schools "Partnership in International Management" (PIM). In October 2008, by decision of the International Community Admission Commission, the Graduate School of Management of St Petersburg University was accepted as a full member of PIM.

GSOM is actively developing international degree programs in the "two diplomas" system: in 2007, a master's program was opened with the Lappeenranta University of Technology (Finland), in 2008 international program EMBA together with NES (France), which ranks 1st among business schools in Europe according to the consolidated rating Financial Times.

GSOM has 26 partners from among the leading business schools in Europe and North America, with which student exchanges are intensively developed (mainly undergraduates) for included education with full credit for courses in the ECTS system: in 2007/08 academic year GSOM accepts more than 100 students from these schools and 100 GSOM students study at these schools during the semester.

The concepts, curricula and regulations of the educational process for the MBA, IEMBA programs (together with NEC (France), PhD, planned to be opened in 2008-2010 were developed. Together with other faculties of St. Petersburg State University, professional training programs "Health Management" (with medical faculty) and "Management of the development of the organization" (with the faculty of psychology).

In 2020, it is planned to open a new dormitory for bachelors of St. Petersburg State University. The budget of such a building is 2.7 million rubles, and its area is 20,252 square meters. Reviews about the GSOM SPbU hostel are the most flattering, but many students are confused by the opening date. After all, you still have to live until 2020, and applicants from other cities simply will not be able to enter until 2020, since they do not have their own apartment. This was discussed during Putin's visit to the business school.

The entire complex of buildings is located on the territory of Mikhailovskaya Dacha. This is a historical site under the control and protection of UNESCO.

At the moment, there are already 22 dormitories, but this is still not enough to accommodate students. Rooms are also divided into several types:

According to the conditions:

  • with a kitchen in a residential block;
  • with a kitchenette in the residential block;
  • without a kitchen in the residential block;
  • corridor type.

By placement:

  • one-room;
  • two-room;
  • three-room.

The rooms are equipped with everything you need: bed, bedside table, chair, desk, wardrobe, bookshelf.

In the hallway there is a hanger, a shelf for shoes and a mirror. The kitchens were also equipped for the comfortable life of students: a dining table, chairs, a dish dryer, a stove, a rack, a cabinet. Appropriate furniture, plumbing and fixtures for the toilet and shower are available. This is how business school students live.
