How translators work for iPhone. Google Translate for iPhone: no internet (offline), camera translation, talk mode and it's all free

An update for Google Mobile Translator has been released in the App Store with support for offline mode. Google Translate 5.0 can become an indispensable assistant for any traveler who no longer needs to know the language of an unfamiliar country in order to calmly navigate the terrain.

In the fifth version of the Google translation app, there was translation from 52 languages and vice versa without an Internet connection. To do this, after installing the update, you need to open the program and use the "Check and Update" button. After that, in the Offline translation section, you need to select the language for which you want to download the package for translation, and confirm the download of data to the device memory.

Google translate supports instant translation of printed text, including using a camera. Recently, iPhone and iPad users can use the "Translate Now" feature. If earlier, using a camera, it was possible to photograph some text, and then translate it, now the translation of a sign, menu or information to a museum exhibit is performed instantly - it is displayed on the screen mobile device... To do this, just point the camera at the required text. The function can also be used without an internet connection.

In addition, Google Translate has a conversation translation mode. When talking with a native speaker of an unfamiliar language, the user needs to switch to the voice translation mode in Google Translate, and then select the conversation translation mode. The application will automatically recognize in which of the two dialogue languages the phrase is pronounced, and will give it a voice translation. The function is available for 38 languages, including Russian.

The main features of Google Translate include:

  • Translate the entered text into 103 languages and vice versa.
  • Offline translation. Translate to and from 52 languages without an internet connection.
  • Fast translation by camera. Instant translation of any inscriptions from 28 languages.
  • Camera mode. To translate the text, it is enough to take a picture of it. 37 languages are supported.
  • Conversation mode. Automatic speech translation from 32 languages and vice versa.
  • Handwriting input. Write your text by hand and translate it into any of 93 languages.

Knowledge of languages is undoubtedly the most useful skill. It is clear that it is impossible to learn all of them, and it is not always possible to find a translator at hand. But in order to clearly communicate with a foreigner, the services of special translation programs are quite enough. What kind of applications of this kind are available for the iPhone?

Lingvo Dictionary

The most powerful functionality has Lingvo Dictionary, from the famous developer ABBYY. You can download it from the itunes store, and it's completely free. The basic version contains about 11 dictionaries for seven languages, and even it will be quite enough for communication while traveling (there is a corresponding subsection - Travel Set). You can quickly search for interpretation, translate and create flashcards of new words to memorize. The scope of possibilities is impressive. The service works autonomously - there is no need for a permanent Internet connection.

If you want to integrate previously purchased dictionaries from ABBYY into it, or purchase additional language packs, you can find a suitable option on the developer's website - abbyy.ru. Offers start at $ 4, you see, much cheaper than any courses.

A very useful function is also available - photo translation, i.e. just take a picture on iPhone camera an incomprehensible passage or word, and the program will give its interpretation.

One of the most popular offers is from the developer Sonico GmbH.

The resource allows you to translate not only individual words, but also expressions or whole texts. Agree, sometimes a certain phrase has a completely different meaning than decomposed and translated into words. Translation from / into more than 90 languages is supported.

Asian hieroglyphs incomprehensible to Europeans can be transformed into the familiar Latin alphabet to facilitate the assimilation of the material. In addition, the voice assistant will tell you how to pronounce them correctly. As you type the text, the appropriate word-suggestions will automatically pop up to eliminate any mistakes.

The premium version of the program has speech input - say the question of interest and iTranslate will recognize, translate and create a ready-made text on the screen that can be shown to the foreigner-interlocutor. Very comfortably!

By the way, this application will work successfully on the "apple" watch. Available to download from a secure source -apple.com

The same developer also provides a useful separate service - iTranslate Voice Lite, also distributed free of charge via itunes. The program supports fully voice control, it is enough to pronounce any text, in more than forty languages - Voice Lite recognizes and instantly displays the translation. There is no need to "drive" words into the menu, the application is very sensitive, and precisely captures what is said.

But there is important point- in order for the service to work, you need to have access to the Internet.

Google

Another worthy resource is translator for iPhone from Google. It also boasts support for about 90 languages and their dialects (subject to text input). In addition, recognition and auto-translation from the user's speech into 40 languages is available. Also, you can shoot on camera an excerpt in one of 26 suggested languages and instantly get a detailed translation.

Not only printed words are read, but also written on the screen in words (this is especially convenient for transferring hieroglyphs), the program successfully identifies them.

A simple and intuitive menu, many free dictionaries, fast work and voice translation - what else do you need? You can download it, again, from itunes.apple.com. Free distribution.

PROMT Offline

Of the paid applications, the translator from the company deserves attention. PROMT... As the name suggests, the application works with its own resources without an Internet connection, i.e. completely autonomous. In remote places from civilization, or in places with poor coverage, you will not be left alone with foreigners who speak a language you do not understand. However, to activate instant translation, access to the network will be required.

For ease of navigation, all the translator's functionality is divided into the most popular subsections. When you switch to one of them, the corresponding vocabulary is activated, and the exchange of data with the user is much faster.

Offline supports voice "input" and "output" of text. All phrases reproduced by the application are voiced by native speakers, so that you will initially have the correct pronunciation without an accent.
At the same time, the resource does not take up so much space in the memory of your iPhone - 98.8 MB of installation + the capacity of the selected dictionary.

The application is available in the App Store at the link: https://itunes.apple.com/ru/app/perevodcik-promt-offline-perevod/id806077158?mt=8. For 349 rubles you get a pre-installed English-Russian package. The rest of the popular ones: Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese and French, can be purchased as needed, for a modest $ 2-3.

LangBook

Another interesting paid app is LangBook. This translator, like its predecessor, supports the "off-line" mode, providing the user with complete autonomy when traveling around the world. Translation from / into 53 languages is available.
This is a kind of self-study language, there is a separate section with grammar and listening. An explanatory phrasebook, with a selection on popular topics, will help you to get out of any difficult situation related to communication in another country with dignity.

About five years ago, a good dictionary and translator for an iPhone cost a lot of money, and good ones, and besides, free ones did not exist at all. After the release of free translators for iPhone and iPad from Google and Yandex, the policies of other companies have also changed and there are now a lot of them in the App Store.

Today in the review of the best, five free translators for iPhone and iPad, with the help of which you can not only translate words and sentences, but also communicate without difficulties while abroad.

Lingvo dictionary + photo translator from English to Russian and 8 more languages

A powerful database of dictionaries in ABBYY Lingvo provides first-class and accurate translation online and offline. A basic set of 10 dictionaries is free, but if you need something more than an ordinary translator, you will have to pay. On the plus side, I will take a good search - by entering a word, not only the translation appears, but also the variants of use in the bulk of phrases.

The translator also has a quick translation from the camera, but it works inconveniently, only one word. To translate an entire sentence or page, developers sell a separate application that costs 379 rubles.

Another feature of the translator is cards - phrases or words that you want to learn can be added to a separate section.

Both corporations and Yandex and Google are trying to promote their services in all directions. The Yandex.Translator application stands out for its simplicity and good functionality - here you can translate without the Internet, and a photo translator, and voice input. And of course it's completely free.

From my own experience, I can with complete confidence say - simultaneous translation works very well even with a poor internet connection. Large texts from photos are translated 50/50, sometimes the application cannot recognize the text at all.

There is also a great trick with which you can quickly delete the written text - you just need to swipe to the left and the input field will become empty.

The translator is interesting for certain functions missing from competitors - a translator keyboard and a widget in the notification center. As for the rest, the translator is very simple and straightforward, it can voice sentences in their entirety and store favorites in a separate section. For the bulk of languages, there are voice translation settings - you can choose which voice the voice will read, female or male, as well as the reading speed.

iTranslate is free, but it has an adware at the bottom, however, you can turn it off by purchasing iTranslate Premium for 529 rubles, which also includes speech recognition and translations with a large amount of text.

As it seems to me, the best and most convenient translator for iPhone and iPad. Google has all of the above functions absolutely free and all this in a pleasant and user-friendly interface. Translation of text from photos works fine, failures are very rare. There is even quite tolerable handwriting input available. I don’t understand for whom it was made, but the fact of its presence is already a plus.

The history of translations is conveniently executed, which is located immediately below the input field - no need to search for recently translated words and sentences in different categories... But Google Translate has a big drawback - it cannot work without an Internet connection.

Microsoft Translator

Translator from Microsoft is still quite young, the application appeared in the App Store last summer, but it has already won over some users. The developers have focused on simultaneous translation, which makes it possible to communicate with people without knowing their language.

You just need to open the translator on the iPhone and Apple Watch, activate the instant translation function and give the iPhone to the interlocutor - the application shows the translation simultaneously on the iPhone and the watch. True, it does not function very accurately now, and there are not many languages, although there is Russian, which is already good.

We did not forget to add the necessary functions, such as translation from a photo, to the application - it was done well and conveniently. The translator is absolutely free, but you don't need to expect anything unusual from it yet, the application contains a lot of minor errors and shortcomings.

What's your favorite iPhone translator app?

Do you regularly use translator software for iPhone? If so, which app do you think is the best and why? Be sure to write your opinion in the comments.

Do you regularly use translation apps for your iPhone? If so, what are your current favorites and why do you prefer them on other parameters? Be sure to let me know in the comments!

You can translate text online (without the Internet) on an iPhone using free applications available for download in the AppStore.

It is almost impossible to travel and absorb the energy of yet unexplored countries without communicating with the locals - you will not be able to understand the culture, feel the emotions of those who have never seen the harsh Russian winter and still believe in bears wandering the frozen streets of Siberian cities.

And sometimes, without knowing the language, you can't buy a token in the subway and order sparkling wine in a restaurant. You can solve the problem with communication in two ways - immediately jump on the courses in English and believe that the international language is familiar to everyone both in Europe and in China, or - download an offline translator for iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and instantly turn into someone who is able to put together sentences on the fly without any effort.

Google translate

An advanced, multifunctional and truly technological tool for the iPhone, capable of any feats related to translation and search correct words... Developers from Google offer to understand handwritten sentences and words drawn on signs and stops, help to understand pronunciation and foreign speech, and at the same time remind how basic language constructions are built, with which it is easy to order coffee or a taxi.

Yes, not all of the listed functions are available without access to the network (or, more precisely, not all languages have such a function!), But even the initial capabilities are already enough for understanding. However, the main advantage of Google is not even in the number of translations, not in a special training section, where every beginner will find answers to emerging questions, but in omnivorousness.

On the this moment the database contains 59 languages available without the Internet. It is not possible to find any application similar in scale. Neither iPhone nor Android with Windows.

If there is a desire to get out abroad and sort out other people's lives, then Google is obliged to be not only on the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, but also at a low start, like a revolver of a cowboy crossing a gloomy saloon, where it is not known from whom to expect a dirty trick.

Translate.Ru

Developers from PROMT are back on top. Previous errors related to the strange translation, which were encountered 5-7 years ago, have been eliminated. The interface, which suffered from a bunch of unnecessary buttons, is now brought to perfection. And the number of those supported without Internet access has grown to 16.

Yes, compared to Google, the figure is small, but on the other hand, there are free phrasebooks with frequently used phrases and sentences, and a special platform for learning, even during the flight on an airplane, it can teach those who skipped classes at school or never got in touch with the chosen language basically.

Working with Translate.ru is easy - you can enter or pronounce text, and then receive a response with the option of choosing an additional translation for some words.

Yandex translate

An application is a service for the iPhone that has not yet reached its final development, but is diligently moving along the beaten paths that Google has prudently paved. Yes, offline support for languages is still weak, recording information by voice is far from the first time, and the built-in translation from the camera works only with perfect lighting from a certain angle, it is worth taking a closer look at Yandex now. And the main reason for this is the developers.

No one will leave a domestic translator without support for more than a couple of weeks. Therefore, you can wait for updates, unexpected innovations and technical fixes.

A good translator of texts, in many situations, can make our life much easier. Especially when it comes to work or travel.

Thanks to the development of technology, there is no longer a need to go to the library (I remember doing this myself) or buy multivolume dictionaries - a device that can replace several shelves with half-kilogram books now fits in your pocket.

Regardless of how good your English is, some texts will contain words that you don't know. In such cases, a good, correct translator will be very helpful and will help you to understand exactly what is being said. So I am sure that the selection of programs for iPhone and iPad that I have made will definitely come in handy for you.

Google translate

Probably the most famous application of its kind, the web version of which many of us use on a daily basis in our work. Google Translate does an excellent job even with large texts in the region of 10 thousand characters, understands slang, has a built-in speech recognition function, and supports voice acting. And all of this is available for more than a hundred languages, half of them even without access to the Web.

Another interesting option is camera translation. It is enough to point it at an unfamiliar inscription and activate the corresponding function. Without exaggeration, a mega-useful option for tourists and travelers.

I recently wrote that the developers have implemented the ability to work offline in the iOS application, for which you just need to download the necessary dictionaries. Considering that the most popular pairs are English, German and Russian, all this will take a little over 100 MB, which is almost nothing.

Translator PROMT (offline)

Multilingual translator from Russian developers, which can work completely in the mode without access to the Internet, and stands out against the background of others with a number of interesting functions. In particular, the user gets such useful features as:
breakdown by thematic dictionaries, which increases the accuracy of translation (business, study, travel, etc.);
the ability to work with text from any application;
translation history up to a thousand actions (!);
built-in phrasebook, phrases in which are voiced by native speakers;
the ability to train your own pronunciation and compare with the original.

Simple and nothing more.

Yandex. Translator

Another free translator created by the developers of the Yandex search engine. Its main feature is an excellent understanding of the morphology of the Russian and Ukrainian languages, which in some cases allows the use of a better quality result.

There are about 60 languages available, there are examples of the use of phrases, voice input, translation by photo, saving the result in the "Favorites", and other nice little things. Apple Watch support is also worth noting, which other apps from our list do not have.

Abby Lingvo Live for iOS

The development from Abby Lingvo is deservedly considered the best in its class. True, this translator is not suitable for translating large texts, but it does an excellent job with words and individual sentences. Although, in the latest versions, they also added full-text mode, but you already need to test this option yourself.

In the screenshot above, you can see an example of what the English-Russian translation looks like with transcription, and in general, 130 dictionaries for 14 languages are available, and even with voice acting. So German, Spanish, Italian and other languages popular in Europe are supported natively.

Lingvo is available for iPhone only and requires internet access to work. If you want to use the features of the application offline, you will have to pay for a monthly or annual subscription, which cost 229 rubles. and 999 p., respectively.

Certainly, the best option there will always be just language learning, but translation programs can be of great help in many situations. It is worth noting that almost all of the list we have listed is free, which means that you can install it on your iOS device without any problems.
