Features of the design of the butterfly valve


Butterfly valves are collapsible or non-collapsible.

  1. The collapsible design allows the replacement of the disc seal, stem and disc by the repair services of the enterprise.
  2. The non-separable design provides increased tightness due to the absence of unnecessary connections. Only the disk seal and the disk itself are in contact with the working medium - the medium does not come into contact with the body.

Butterfly valves can include monolithic or removable seals in their mechanism, various cuffs depending on the characteristics of the medium in the pipeline.

Butterfly valve seals and their characteristics

The seat seal is an important part of the butterfly valve, on which its tightness depends. The ways of sealing the butterfly valve are different depending on the purpose of the valve -

  • with elastic seal on the disc,
  • with seal in the body,
  • with a lined jacket in the body,
  • with metal seal, etc.

Practice shows good the results of using an NBR cuff for compressed air, and due to the high oil resistance of mixtures such as water with oil, water with gasoline, sea water with diesel fuel and other environments at ambient temperatures from -20°С to +80°С.

Sleeves made of EPDM are ideal for neutral liquids, heated industrial water, compounds with glycols at medium temperatures from -40°C to +130°C, as well as a number of other media.

  • to oil products
  • some aggressive liquids
  • and gases at a temperature of the working medium from -20°С to +160°С.

Butterfly valve is an element of pipeline fittings used to block the flow of the medium. The blocking of the flow is carried out using a disk that rotates around its axis. Butterfly valves are used in technological schemes pipelines with large diameters and relatively low pressure, in those nodes where there are no increased requirements for the tightness of fittings.

Butterfly valves, symmetrical

The advantages of symmetrical valves include a lower cost, and the disadvantages - a decrease in the tightness class, compared with eccentric ones.

Double eccentric butterfly valves

PALUR-ZD-2EX butterfly valves are two-eccentric rotary disc valves.

What are the advantages of double eccentric valves? In valves with a displaced eccentricity, the center of rotation of the disk is shifted back relative to the center line and away from the axis of symmetry. This significantly increases the tightness.

Also, this design allows you to use a variety of materials for it, by reducing the zone of mutual contact between the disc and the seat at the time of closing. This reduction prevents seal wear.

All this allows the use of such valves in more severe conditions than similar ones with a symmetrical disk. Double eccentric valves can be used for high temperatures, large numbers of operating cycles, ultra-aggressive working environments, etc.

Butterfly valves

PALUR-ZD-3EX butterfly valves are three-eccentric butterfly valves.

  • Nominal diameter- from DN50 to DN2400.

Triple offset valves are used in applications where friction must be completely eliminated. The triple eccentric seal ensures that the sealing surfaces between the body and the disc are completely frictionless during rotation. This, in turn, allows you to completely eliminate abrasion, and get rid of leaks.

The effect of displacement (eccentricity) can be visualized as follows: when the disc is moved to the "open" position, the disc moves away from the body seal much faster, thereby reducing deformation and friction between the disc and the body seal.

The eccentricity allows the body and disc seals to instantly open when opened, and when closed, the sealing surfaces form a much stronger contact. All this leads to a reduction in wear and abrasion of surfaces, which significantly extends the service life of products.

Wafer connection

Wafer connection - a fairly common type of connection of pipeline fittings. Wafer type valves do not have their own flanges or threads, they are installed between two flanges and tightened with studs.

The advantage of wafer connections

  • Wide use. The wafer connection is suitable for most process units and working environments.
  • Reducing the construction length of the product, as well as reducing its weight, as a result - a small load on the pipeline, and a lower price.
  • Facilitate installation in limited conditions, the ability to rotate the valve in desired position around the axis of the pipeline.
  • The ability to easily dismantle the desired system unit for repair and cleaning.

Difficulties in installing a wafer valve are in the correct centering, i.e. the location of the valve and flanges relative to each other, as well as in the uniform tightening of the tightening studs. With uneven tightening of the studs in the flange connection, leakage may occur, as well as deformation of the valve body.

  • Possibility of installation in flammable and explosive areas, due to the absence of the need for welding.

Disadvantages of flange connections

The disadvantages of connections using flanges include an increase in the weight and dimensions of the product, which makes it difficult to install in hard-to-reach places, as well as the possibility of loss of tightness of the connection due to frequent and significant pressure and temperature drops.

Weld connection

Connection for welding (welded) is the most reliable way of mounting valves. The advantages of a welded joint include:

  • Full tightness, subject to high-quality welding work.
  • No need to resort to additional joint seals, and as a result, the impossibility of destruction of these seals in an aggressive environment.
  • Minimum Maintenance. Welded connections do not require maintenance, and also reduce the weight of the product and the load on the pipeline
  • The disadvantages of such a connection include the need to use special equipment, both for installing fittings and for replacing them.
  • The possibility of using fittings at ultra-high steam pressures, as well as in such technical lines in which it is undesirable for the working medium to enter the surrounding atmosphere, due to their toxicity or explosiveness.
