Fiber-optic communication by Rostelecom. Gpon technology Rostelecom: what it is and how to set it up

Thanks to GPON from Rostelecom, users were able to connect high speed internet on their own computers. You can learn more about the technology by decrypting the abbreviation, which stands for gigabite passive optical network, or in Russian - gigabit passive optical network.

GPON from Rostelecom

The basis of the GPON technology from Rostelecom, which has repeatedly received positive reviews both among professionals and users, was laid many years ago. Development began in the 80s of the last century. The tests were first carried out in 1987 in England. The second stage was a consortium in 1995 dedicated to PON standardization. It was attended by developers and the largest Internet providers in the world. Just three years after the consortium, the first optical networks available to a wide audience were installed in the United States and Japan. Further, the technology began its rapid development in other countries of the world.

In Russia, the introduction of GPON is now at its initial stage. Active participation in this event is taken by MGTS providers and Rostelecom. The transition to fiber after long-term use of copper cable is quite difficult, since it requires significant costs for laying new lines and purchasing compatible equipment. Nevertheless, Rostelecom is ready to offer GPON connectivity not only in large cities, but also in some private sectors outside of them.

Scheme GPON connections from Rostelecom is quite simple. The provider supplies fiber to each of the houses, and then, using a switch, the cable is split and fed to the user's compatible equipment. In the apartment itself, the signal is converted by a special router that has a fiber optic input. Such equipment is quite expensive, so users often rent it from a provider.

Important: Before setting up GPON from Rostelecom for own equipment in a home network, you need to connect an Internet operator cable and one computer via the LAN connector. After that, you will be able to enter the device web interface.

Setting up equipment for GPON from Rostelecom

Suitable equipment for GPON connection can be rented directly from Rostelecom. If you are satisfied with this option, the provider will personally configure the network devices in your home. In cases where equipment is purchased separately, setup costs will not be included in the initial connection. Therefore, on the router, you will need to independently enter the Internet parameters.

For successful establishment fiber optic networks should pay special attention to the selection of equipment. The first thing to consider is the functionality of the router. If, in addition to the Internet, you also need to be able to connect IPTV and telephony, it is recommended to purchase a terminal. In other cases, it will be enough to have a simple fiber-optic router.

One of the optimal terminal models that can be rented or bought from Rostelecom is G PON ONT RFT620. In addition to four LAN ports for connecting computers to the Internet and a built-in Wi-Fi module, such a device will allow you to take advantage of all the advantages of IP and classic telephony.

Having connected the GPON cable from Rostelecom and the computer via the LAN connector, you need to turn on the equipment and go to its settings. To do this, you need to open any browser and write in the address bar of the terminal's IP. GPON ONT RFT620 from Rostelecom uses the IP address 192.168.1.254 to enter the parameter settings by default. Before entering the device software, it will be necessary to enter a username and password, which have the values user / user. After that, you will be taken to the home page of the firmware. Internet settings on this model are already predefined by the provider and do not need to be changed.

By default, the hardware does not have a wireless connection, which will need to be manually activated. Wi-Fi on a router from Rostelecom model GPON ONT RFT620 can be enabled in the "Wireless network" menu. Before activating, it is recommended that you pay special attention to the security settings that will help protect your network from intrusion by outsiders.

GPON technology - a new step in evolution broadband connection to the internet. Thanks to the high speed and stability of the network, users get almost unlimited opportunities for work and play at the computer.

Modern technologies are developing so rapidly that sometimes it is incredibly difficult to even keep track of all the changes. But it is impossible to lag behind the existing trends, since it will be incredibly difficult to catch up with the competitors who have taken advantage of the new products. This is well understood in the largest Russian telecommunications company, so they try to offer the highest quality services and modern options. But, it's not just providers that need to follow trends. Customers should also know the main features and advantages of Rostelecom's GPON technology. What is it, what benefits does it bring and is it worth connecting to the new offer - all the listed questions, which have become relevant in 2019, should receive accurate and correct answers. Only in this way all parties to the contract will be able to use all the positive aspects of the novelty and not deny themselves the pleasure of using high-quality, reliable Internet and communication.

What is GPON technology

Those wishing to understand what the GPON technology from Rostelecom is, you need to know that this innovation is a special communication line in which instead of the usual copper cable, fiber is used. This approach allows you to significantly increase the speed of information transfer and the volume of Internet traffic. As a result, instead of the usual 100-200 Mbit / s, users will be able to receive gigabits of traffic per second. Even the name itself speaks of this: the letter G in the abbreviation indicates precisely the fact that the updated speed is calculated in gigabits.

Another plus that affects the quality of the connection is the complete absence of additional distribution points. All available traffic comes to customers directly from the provider, bypassing unnecessary intermediaries and additional devices, the use of which unwittingly reduced the connection speed and the quality of the services provided by the company.

Connecting to GPON from Rostelecom

Those wishing to use high-speed Internet should remember that, in general, the connection procedure remains unchanged and consists in concluding an agreement with the provider. The rest will be done by the employees of the telecommunications company. The choice of the equipment supporting GPON by Rostelecom will not cause any difficulties either. The company's managers will definitely explain which devices to give preference to. In this case, the final version depends on what services the client connects.

If you focus on the most important nuances of the connection, then it is worth highlighting the following details:

  • the hallway will be the optimal location for the router or receiver;
  • the length of the cable located on open areas in an apartment should be minimal;
  • there must be a socket near the installation site.

That is, users will not have to face difficulties and impossible conditions.

Equipment setup

Setting up GPON by Rostelecom will not cause serious difficulties either. Taking into account the fact that only the line itself is subject to change, and the other nuances of the connection remain unchanged, the setting of the necessary parameters of the equipment used will not change. But, if a subscriber has unforeseen difficulties, he is at any time able to contact support operators, who will certainly prompt how to act in this situation and cope with the difficulty that has arisen.

All of the above brings to the fore not the setting of the technique, but right choice prefixes. Subscribers should decide in advance:

  • what tariffs and service packages will be connected (television, internet, home phone);
  • how the equipment will be connected to the network (cable or wi-fi);
  • in addition, you must make sure that the device is capable of receiving a signal from the optics.

If we consider all of the above, problems will definitely not arise.

Services and packages

The connection of the new technology does not in any way affect the offers available for activation. Subscribers can choose any of the available television packages or tariffs for access to world wide web... This will be reported by the managers and specialists of the company making the connection.

At the same time, so that replacing old equipment with optical fiber does not turn out to be meaningless, it is necessary to think in advance about how justified such actions will be. The main effect of this replacement should be the increased speed. If there is no urgent need for it, then it makes no sense to switch to a new, modern cable.

An exception that can make users think about a replacement is the number of connected services. The more packages a customer uses, the higher the wiring bandwidth requirements.

Pros and cons of GPON technology

The most accessible source of information about the positive and negative aspects of the new technology Rostelecom GPON - reviews. But when reading the comments of people who have already experienced fiber connections, it must be remembered that their opinions are not always objective. Therefore, when deciding to switch to optics, the following advantages should be considered:

  • higher connection speed and higher bandwidth;
  • lack of additional terminals and devices that reduce the quality of communication;
  • no interference from electromagnetic radiation and greater resistance to moisture, since no electricity is used in optics.

Of the minuses, it is necessary to note the fragility of fiber. It's hard to bend and incredibly difficult to repair. Therefore, if the line is damaged, restoration will take time, during which it will be impossible to watch TV and go online. Fragility is also caused by the need to reduce the length of the cable in the apartment. The smaller it is, the lower the likelihood of damage.

Along with the improvement of network equipment at the Internet service provider, as well as its consumer, technologies for the manufacture of signal transmission lines are being developed and modernized. Recently emerging passive optical networks are gradually replacing signal transmission lines over copper wires. New technology are actively implemented by the main Internet operators.

Rostelecom's GPON lines have already been laid in many large and small settlements of the country. They are distinguished by a large throughput, high speed of information transfer and reliability during operation.

The letters PON in the abbreviation stand for "Passive Fiber-Optic Network", and the first letter G (gigabit) defines the exchange rate in a network made using this technology to transfer information at tremendous speeds. Passive networks are called because of the absence of intermediate amplifying (active) nodes on the path of impulse information transmission from the provider to the subscriber and vice versa.

With the use of Rostelecom's GPON technology, the exchange is carried out via a cable consisting of separate fiber-optic cores of a certain amount, placed in a polyurethane sheath. Depending on the installation conditions, the fiber is additionally protected by an armored sheath made of wire or metal foil.

This protection is performed to eliminate external mechanical stress on optical fiber, and not to prevent electromagnetic influences on the line. Fiber optic is immune to them. All exchange via the optical line in Rostelecom is carried out by light pulses. Let's take a look at how PON technology works.

The provider's backbone cable has more than 100 light-conducting conductors. To create a branched network, passive splitters (optical dividers) are used, branching the common Rostelecom cable into separate “streams”. Each of them is subsequently also able to share through its own splitter to provide information to a certain number of subscribers of the Rostelecom provider.

Splitters do not include active ingredients for functioning, which does not require the supply of a supply voltage to them. This arrangement determines high degree the reliability of the fiber-optic "Jipon" network. In the event of breaks from external influences, operability is restored by using welding using a special technology performed by trained personnel of Rostelecom.

Today, optical fiber is capable of transmitting light pulses without loss of information quality over a distance of up to 20 km without additional amplification.

Fiber Optic Benefits

Compared to lines using metal copper conductors for information exchange, ordinary twisted-pair Ethernet has the following advantages:

Disadvantages of fiber

Some disadvantages of fiber optic lines have been identified:

  1. the fragility of the material of the medium for the propagation of light, which is quartz, like glass;
  2. increased requirements for the qualifications of the personnel conducting the optical fiber installation, the use of special tools by the employees;
  3. the inability to repair the line in the event of a breakage (you have to cut and replace an entire section of fiber);
  4. loss of transparency by glass during long-term operation, the appearance of microcracks in its structure;
  5. the use of a limited range of equipment capable of receiving and decoding a signal transmitted using GPON optical fiber.

The principle of connection to Rostelecom

In different regions of the operator's operation, Rostelecom's technical service delivers Internet GPON using different connection schemes. In the case of FTTH, optical fiber is conducted directly to each subscriber's apartment. A device is installed in the residential area that converts the signal from Rostelecom into an understandable Ethernet interface. It is called ONT - "Optical Terminal".

Based on the properties of the optical fiber when laying the cable, a path is chosen that has the minimum number of bends, especially at sharp corners. This means that inside the premises its length is limited. Rostelecom's installers are placing the new device in the immediate vicinity of the fiber-optic connection to the consumer's residential area. Since the terminal for its functioning requires power supply with the AC voltage through the adapter, the subscriber ensures the presence of a house socket at the place of the terminal installation. Route Ethernet Cables to Wired Home Participants local network produced by the user at his own discretion.

When connecting FTTB by Rostelecom employees, the fiber is laid to the building or the entrance of the house. In a special protected box or box, intermediate equipment for converting the luminous flux into an electrical signal is installed. Maintaining it in good condition, holding preventive work entrusted to the technical support service of Rostelecom. After the conversion process, the incoming fiber-optic Internet is delivered to the consumer via twisted pairs of Ethernet wires.

Fiber optic equipment

It can be purchased from Rostelecom's sales departments or rented with a monthly payment rent... The option of buying by installments is possible. In this case, an appropriate agreement is concluded that stipulates all the conditions for using ONT.

The Eltex NTE-2 model was offered by Rostelecom to its first subscribers connected to optics using GPON technology. This terminal has minimal functionality and can be used in transparent bridge mode for one stationary computer (PC) and one STB set-top box when using IPTV on a TV connected to it.

The terminal does not have its own IP address on the network, internal software(Software) and own interface. The sample offered by Rostelecom lacks an internal routing scheme. The device does not have a built-in wireless module, it is not capable of performing functions like a wifi router does. The task of Eltex NTE-2 is to convert the optical signal of Rostelecom into an Ethernet signal.

You can create a full-fledged home local network using Eltex if you connect an additional router with an Ethernet cable with two end RJ-45 connectors to the Port 0 connector on the rear panel of the NTE-2 terminal. The other RJ-45 connector of the patch cable docks with the WAN port used by the router in conjunction with it.

With the development of optical fiber and PON networks, Rostelecom is expanding the range of devices provided to the consumer. One of the latest models is the self-adapting ONT NTP-RG-1402G-W. The device has full functionality required to create a home local network. There are four Ethernet ports providing gigabit speed. Two of them work for Rostelecom's high-speed Internet, the other two are intended for IP-TV. There are two more ports for connecting IP telephony devices. The built-in wireless module is used to create an access point for an 802.11n Wi-Fi network at speeds up to 300 Mbps.

Network equipment settings

When using ONT Eltex NTE-2, Rostelecom's Internet connection is configured on a computer, the network card of which is connected with an Ethernet cable with terminal RG-45 connectors to the Port 0-terminal connector. The PC network card is configured to obtain IP addresses and DNS server in automatic mode.

In order to connect to the Internet, Rostelecom's network connection is configured for PPPoE. For him, there is a requirement to enter the data from the contract concluded with the provider when setting up: "Username / password".

In this way, you have to connect every time you turn on your computer if you want to visit Internet sites from Rostelecom. Setting up a wireless wifi connection is out of the question. This ONT simply does not have such a function.

If a subscriber purchases GPON from Rostelecom, ONT NTP-RG-1402G-W will have to be manually configured only Wi-Fi network... The provider's equipment already has a virtual user interface tied to the MAC address of its fiber-optic router. Account settings are made by the Rostelecom system administrator. Manual Wi-Fi setup produced by the user in the router interface. To enter it, the web browser used is opened on the PC connected to the LAN port.

The IP-address of the ONT is entered into the address line, depending on the firmware it has the value 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Press Enter on the PC keyboard. In the authorization window, the default device login and password are recorded: user / user, the "Send" stencil is pressed.

On the general settings page, open the Wi-Fi tab, in it, click on the Basic item. In its expanded window, check the boxes for enabling wireless connection and enabling wireless multicast (WMF) for streaming IPTV. Then we come up with a network name and enter it in the SSID field. Finally, we execute the "Apply" command.

To protect the network from unauthorized interference, in the Security tab, select the parameters for checking the authentication of the network with the selected name - Mixed WPA2 / WPA-PSK, as well as the type of information encryption: AES. In conclusion, we write down an individually created password, consisting of a sequence of Latin letters and numbers of at least 8 and no more than 15. The configuration is completed by executing the “Apply” command.

To activate the entered data, you will need to restart the terminal. It is performed after selecting the Reboot item in the Management tab and then executing the Reboot command.

Services and tariffs for Internet GPON

The Triple Play service is available to users connected via the provider's fiber. It includes a package of services from Rostelecom:

If a subscriber refuses any Rostelecom service, the rest will continue to work without any restrictions or loss of quality. The use of hardware models recommended by the provider provides significant advantages to its users:

  1. free setup of Rostelecom during installation and maintenance in the future;
  2. a guarantee for the models used;
  3. warranty repair or full replacement if it is impossible to eliminate the malfunction;
  4. the ability to configure remotely through the company's contact center.

All of the above privileges are lost if the user's hardware does not match the one recommended by the provider. Elimination of all arising problems is solved by the subscriber at his own expense.

Users are interested in how much it costs to use fiber. To answer, the subscriber must contact the sales department of Rostelecom. The value of the cost in terms of pricing, tariffs operating in different regions are determined only on the basis of the documents of the regional provider Rostelecom. The general tendency is as follows: the smaller the settlement and the farther it is located to the east from the center of Russia, the more subscribers pay for using fiber. It should be noted that the company is holding regular promotions using the results of data analysis on GPON.

In 2013, the fiber-optic Internet was connected to Rostelecom. Fiber optic differs from ADSL primarily in its conductor properties. If the ADSL signal is transmitted by means of an electric current in copper wire, then GPON uses light for this, and plastic-braided glass as a transmission medium. Light travels fast enough even in glass. Hence, accordingly, the higher speed of the Internet, but more on that below.

I must say right away that this technology, like everything else in this world, has its advantages and disadvantages.

Benefits of fiber optic technology

These are, of course, opportunities not found on ADSL.

High connection speed

Significantly higher than ADSL. Of course, if tariff plan choose adequate for fiber optic. If you take 10 Mbit / s, then there is no point in switching from ADSL to optics. It is worth connecting only 50, 100, 150 Mbit / s (and this is not the limit).

If the speed does not change after connecting the fiber optic, the problem is in your PC. Yes, yes, you have a powerful new PC, there can be no problems on it, and yet the problem is there.

DIGITAL TV connectivity

Let's start with the fact that TV cannot be connected to ADSL everywhere, and if possible, then only on one TV. That is, if you have 3 TVs, then digital TV will only work on one.

On fiber, this is easier. There are no restrictions on TV connections. You connect as much as you want. HD channels are available, video on demand, you can connect TV to tablets or laptops, there is access to social media. networks, rewind and pause works, you can record your favorite programs and more.

I used this service only when connected to the Internet. We were offered an Internet + TV promotion for 450 rubles. a month for six months. I used it, but then refused, tk. the promotion is over, the payment has increased, but I don’t watch TV so that I can pay for it. If I get the opportunity to look at something, I stupidly scour my collection of films or a torrent to help me. In general, the Internet is our EVERYTHING.

TRIPLE PLAY on fiber only

It is positioned as 3 services via 1 cable, that is, one glass "hair" in a plastic braid, brought into your apartment, can be connected to you:

1.high speed internet

2. digital television

3.regular landline phone

Less wiring means less cabling problems.

In practice, I will say that it really works, but only at the entrance to the apartment, but around the apartment, the wires will still lie. Well, unless at the repair stage you designed your home network in such a way that all the wires were laid in advance where necessary, which is unlikely.

Count it yourself: from the optical terminal there is a network cable to television, a network cable to a PC and a telephone cable to a telephone apparatus. If there are more TV shek or PC connected, then + more wires for each device. Now, if only all devices are connected via WiFi from the terminal, then you can do without a wire (although it's not so simple here either).

Fiber optic is NOT AFRAID OF THUNDERSTORM

Unlike ADSL modems, which tend to fail in a thunderstorm (due to the high potential difference arising at the junction of 220 V and the ADSL line at the time of a lightning discharge, etc. ... see a physics textbook), the optical terminal is not susceptible to this impact, because the optical line conducts light, not electric current.

Hence the conclusion: fiber is more reliable and safer than the Internet on a copper wire

Thunderstorm is not a warranty case for free replacement of a burnt-out modem. So, if once a year you suffer from the loss of the Internet, equipment, time, nerves and money to buy a new router, switch to fiber-optic Internet is really a panacea. So my one tells me personal experience... Although the terminal can also burn out, for example, from a strong voltage drop in the electrical network, but this is already a year-round and unlikely problem, and no one has canceled the stabilizers yet.

Fiber optic is NOT AFRAID OF VOLTAGE DROP in the electrical network

My house is old, the wiring is rotten and the drops in the network, like "Our Father", in the mornings and evenings. For the former ADSL connection, I had to take a voltage regulator so that the modem would not constantly reboot and reset its settings due to another jump, with all the ensuing calls to technical support.

Fiber-optic internet is more stable in this regard. The optical modem comes with a powerful enough power supply, so it copes with jumps and does not reset the settings. Now the optical terminal is NOT connected to the stabilizer and works for days without rebooting.

Lyrical digression.

And if someone "smart" tells you that, they say, modern Internet connections can be organized without modems / routers, then you do not believe them. These people are stuck in the past and in house networks.
Do you want Wi-Fi at home?
Want!
And what is giving it out?
Router.
So, whichever technology you choose, without connection Wi-Fi router You can't do it anyway. And if so, what difference does it make to you that you have an optical modem or a simple router at the input, provided that both require configuration to work?
No!

However, optical fiber has obvious advantages (see above), however, as well as disadvantages (read below).

Disadvantages of fiber optic connections

🚩City phone DOES NOT WORK WITHOUT LIGHT

Alas and Ah! There is still electricity at home via the copper line to the telephone apparatus, no electricity - it works! An optical terminal does not work on optical fiber without light, because it is powered from a 220 V socket, and without the terminal's operation, accordingly, the phone does not work - there is no connection. So, that there is no electricity in the network - sit without an Internet, and without a phone.

Of course, I personally don't need a city one, but my elderly neighbor suffers without him. Although the lights are not often turned off, life does not bring her pleasure without a telephone, and the copper line in the house has been eliminated and replaced with a fiber-optic one. There are no options left.

So, if you decide to connect your elderly parents to a landline telephone via fiber optic, take this into account.

🚩Fiber optic is FRAGILE and you CANNOT RESTORE it on your own

Sad but true.

The plastic-braided fiber optic cable is relatively strong BUT not armored. Inside there is a very thin glass tube as thick as a human hair (be careful! Only glass is a splinter worse than metal), through which a light signal is transmitted. In case of damage to the cable, the joint is stripped of the braid, the glass tube is released, it is broken with a special cleaver so that the chip is exactly 90 degrees. Then the 2 ends of the wire are laid in welding machine(special for optics) and soldered at the junction.

If your rabbit, hamster, child gnaws, tears, cuts the fiber in the apartment, then you will not restore it yourself! On a copper wire, you can twist: cleaned, twisted, wound with electrical tape - it works!

You can't do that with fiber. You need equipment, well, specially trained hands, that is, you will not be able to do without a call to technical support with all that it implies. But you will find out about it yourself when your beloved cat tastes the optics, because mine did just that. For the restoration of the cable had to pay 461 rubles. in one bite, and if it is not one, then multiply by 2, 3 ...

So, at the stage of installing and connecting the fiber-optic Internet, think about how you can tighten the fiber next to the 220 V outlet and run the wires so that no one walks on them. Read the tips below.

OTHER FEATURES

✔ Fiber optic does not rot, does not oxidize, is not afraid of water and snow, unlike copper.

✔ But it can seriously suffer from strong bends at 90 degrees.

✔ Optics are afraid of dirt and dust. So if the optical connector is dirty, then the Internet may work worse or not work at all (due to a decrease in signal strength). I had this after the renovation. Again, you need a call to technical support. This time they did not take money, only the optical connector was cleaned with a special napkin.

Connection tips

№1 . The 220 V socket must be near or near the terminal.

If you are on stage overhaul, be sure to consider an additional socket for the terminal near the entrance to the apartment.

Fiber is pulled from the entrance, respectively, you will need a hole in the wall. The ideal time to connect to the fiber-optic internet is before wallpapering. Nothing superfluous will be crumbled.

# 2. It is better not to place the terminal next to a door or doorway.

100% of the door installers will tear your optics, because this is not their problem. Read about the restoration of optics in the apartment and the cost above.

No. 3. It is advisable not to run the fiber "deep" into the apartment.

The shorter the fiber-optic cable in your area of responsibility, the less risk of damaging it, and, consequently, losing money. And at the entrance they will fix it for you free of charge if the vandal neighbors tear the fiber. Better to fix it closer to the entrance somewhere at the top, but not too close to the door.

No. 4. Do not bend or bend the fiber too much.

If you still need to bend the fiber, then try to keep the bending radius as large as possible. The tighter the bend, the lower the signal strength and the poorer the transmission quality.

No. 5. Think over the location of the terminal and wiring in advance.

Do not leave it entirely to the installer, they say, let him do everything himself as he wants, and then I will put it in Feng Shui. Then you will understand how comfortable it would be for you, but it will be too late: the fiber has already been laid, welded and fixed.

And it's the same with your PCs. Think about how many and where you will connect them, and immediately tell the master to throw the network cables where you need to - it's free. And after the fact, it’s painfully troublesome to find out who will remake you everything as it should, and most likely you will be sent to the store for the power cord. Why? Because late ignition is rarely free.

No. 6. Do not place fiber in the core.

People walk where there is furniture. 100% over time, the cable will fray or be torn, gnawed off, we know - we swam. Don't be arrogant, take him to where no one cares about him.

№7 . Keep the terminal away from electrical appliances

Especially those that get hot, for example, in the kitchen! The kitchen is too aggressive a place for sensitive network equipment: grease, dirt, soot, water, microwave oven, refrigerator, stove - can cause you quite a few problems with the Internet.

Also, don’t put it in a box, don’t put anything on it, or you’ll block its ventilation. It is best to install it on a wall near an electrical outlet. According to the instructions, the optical modem should have 10 cm of space around it (excluding the attachment point).

№8 . DO NOT look into the fiber optic connector with your eyes.

In case someone close to you decided to closely examine the equipment.

Lasers are hazardous devices. When it enters the eye, the laser beam is focused into a very small spot, which can result in retinal burns in a fraction of a second.

No. 9. Check the work of the Internet before the master leaves.

You got the internet hooked up. Until the installer left with him, check the Internet on all devices: stationary PCs, laptops, tablets, mobile phones. Better now to make sure that everything works, than to find out later if it worked at all?

No. 10. Remember terminal indication when all services are running.

I made sure that it works - take a photo of the optical terminal indication and the connection method on the back side. What for? To make it easier to look for a possible malfunction (about them below).

No. 11. Check your speed.

You have a fiber-optic internet connected, the wiring is perfectly laid out, everything is neat, beautiful, reliable, safe. Well done, you can rest. But sooner or later you decide to check your internet speed.

Internet speed (using any technology from any provider) should be measured only with a network cable (via the Internet via the LAN port), and not via WiFi, and only on 1 connected computer. It is also desirable with a Torrent, but in the most extreme case with a Speedtest (but better with a Torrent).

No. 12. Connect your PC to the terminal with a power cord if you need a stable Internet connection.

And if everything is more or less clear with the Internet, then it is still not worth connecting TV set-top boxes via WiFi (Rostelecom offers video senders for those who do not want to contemplate the wires around the apartment). If there is an opportunity to throw a network cable - throw it. If this is not possible, what to do - put video senders, but the quality of the TV may be worse and the support is unlikely to fix it. Just keep this in mind when connecting to digital TV.

Even if some advice seems elementary to you, do not neglect them! They will save you from unnecessary spending of money and nerves when connecting and further using the fiber-optic Internet Rostelecom.

Why is the internet not working? Can you solve the problem yourself?

There are not so many reasons why the Internet may not work, and those that can be found and eliminated on your own are even less. The easiest place to start looking for a possible problem is to evaluate the terminal indication. Do you remember when I advised you to take a photo when everything was working?

Indication is a technique of observation, fixation, control, assessment of the state of various objects to control changes over time and comparison with the norm. (Wiki).

1. Terminal indication. Why is it needed?

According to the indication of the optical terminal, the specialist can make an accurate diagnosis of the malfunction and eliminate it as quickly as possible. And not a specialist can help a specialist if he informs how the terminal indication has changed. To do this, you took a photo, well, or remembered which bulbs were on, and now you can compare the current state with what it was.

2. What do the indicators mean?

Different models and brands of equipment have different indicators, but they mean the same thing. Conventionally, we are interested in 4 groups of indicators and 2 groups of problems:

Solved independently

Solved only by RTK technical support (8 800 ...).

POWER

The light should be on steadily without blinking.

If you have a multimeter at home, measure the voltage in the email. outlet (less than 200 W - buy a stabilizer).

SYNCHRANIZATION (LOS \ PON, or LINK \ AUTH, or OPTICAL, or others.)

This group of LEDs indicates the physical and virtual connection from the terminal to the station. Symbols and operating conditions may appear differently. Changes in the indication can mean problems, both on the part of the home wiring (read above about the break of the fiber-optic cable), and problems with the station part. In any case, you can't fix it on your own, only a call to 8 800 ...

LOCAL NETWORK (LAN 1, LAN 2, LAN 3, LAN 4 - wired; WLAN - wireless).

This is your internal network - the connection from the terminal to the PC. If these indicators are off, then the reason may be:

1.with Ethernet cable;

2. PC network card;

3. In rare cases, this may mean that the port on the terminal is "closed" by the provider (call 8 800 ...).

In order to exclude possible problem with an Ethernet cable (network cable), take a working cable (in the box from the terminal or buy it in a store) and connect it to the “faulty” port of the terminal. If nothing has changed, check your PC's network card. If it works, call 8 800.

If the WLAN indicator is off, then probably WiFi on the terminal is turned off. There is a "WLAN" button on the body of the optical terminal, press it to turn on WiFi on the terminal.

INTERNET

This light is not present on all types of devices. Indicates the presence or absence of authorization or simply the Internet on the optical terminal. It should burn steadily. If it is off or blinking, then the simplest thing to do is to unplug the terminal and turn it on again after 7-10 minutes. If the Internet does not work, call 8 800 ...

Type problem« the indication has not changed, and the Internet does not work» .

If there are no problems on the part of RTK, such as an accident or planned work, and you paid for your Internet on time, then the problem is with a probability of 99.9% on your PC. Of course, you have a super-duper new PC, but still call an experienced specialist and let him check that there is definitely no problem on your side, and then you can contact 8 800 with a clean piece of advice ...

Well ... everything seems to be about fiber optic in my apartment.

Friends often ask if it makes sense to switch to GPON? I can answer with a counter question, is there any point in changing to a new car if you have a used Zaporozhets?

Uninterrupted Internet for you!

The constant development of technology allows you to connect the Internet to apartments for more and more high speeds... One of the ways of such connection is the Gpon technology, which is also offered by Rostelecom.

Gpon - general job description

Passive optical technologies (Pon) have appeared not very long ago, but they are confidently replacing traditional methods of organizing Internet access using copper cables. Optical cable has huge advantages over copper cable:

The "G" prefix assumes that the connection is at gigabit speed. This technology is called passive because there is no active network equipment between the provider's node and the end user, and the optics are laid directly into the client's apartment.

No equipment is required, because the length of the optical cable without additional signal amplification is up to 20 km, and in the near future, developments are underway to increase the trunk to 60 km.

Connection can be carried out in synchronous and asynchronous modes. Usually providers prefer asynchronous mode. The maximum speed is limited to 2.5 Gb / s for receiving, and 1.25 Gb / s for transferring information.

The principle of connecting to Rostelecom

In order to connect to a future subscriber, it is necessary to contact the nearest Rostelecom office and leave a request. You can connect one or several services to choose from:

  • Internet;

  • City (landline) telephony;

  • IP television.

Any wire connection to the provider requires additional costs.

Those clients who have previously been connected to Rostelecom via ADSL technologies, know this from their own experience, new subscribers will be told about this when submitting an application.

The main difficulties are the installation of the cable, which, due to its specific qualities, is not desirable to bend strongly, therefore, usually all equipment is installed in the hallway. The equipment includes a special ONT router designed to work in fiber-optic networks, which can be rented directly from the provider or bought on your own. It is advisable that an electrical outlet be installed in the hallway. End devices are connected via a normal twisted-pair Ethernet cable, or via WiFi.

Once agreed with the client technical issues, a router is purchased, a service contract is concluded. Installation and cable laying, and router configuration are performed.

Setting up equipment for connection

If a router is purchased or leased from Rostelecom, then its initial configuration is performed during installation directly by Rostelecom employees. In cases where the subscriber is buying a router himself or he already has equipment, the configuration options may differ depending on the model and manufacturer of the network equipment, as well as on its capabilities. You can find enough information on the Internet with step by step instructions, for which you can configure yourself.

Rostelecom offers its customers several models of ONT devices, one of which is G PON ONT RFT620. This is a fairly successful and versatile model that allows you to connect up to 4 devices to the LAN, and an unlimited number of wireless technology, you can watch streaming TV, and connect up to 2 stationary phones.

All settings are made via the web configurator. To do this, type in the browser the address "192.168.1.254", and enter the username and password: user / user. You do not need to drive in any Internet settings, this has already been done by the provider. You just need to configure your home network to suit your needs:

  • turn on the wireless WiFi module;

  • change security settings;

  • set static or dynamic IP addresses, etc.

Services and packages

Rostelecom offers its customers a variety of different options and service packages, the most popular of which are the following:

  • home internet via fiber-optic line with a choice of connection speed;

  • interactive television with over 160 channels;

  • home landline telephone, with a choice of tariff for calls;

  • mobile telephony;

  • ONT router rental at a low price.

All these services can be selected separately or combined into packages. The monthly will also depend on the choice. subscription fee... The company holds constant promotions and discounts, information about which can be found on their portal. Also, for each region, the price for services is different.

Pros and cons of Gpon connection

Connecting via GPON, like in any other way, has its positive and negative sides. The positive ones include the following:

  • The cable runs directly between the provider's PBX and into the user's apartment, i.e. there are no intermediate nodes, which significantly increases the speed of information transfer and the stability of the signal.

  • The signal in the fiber optic cable is transmitted not by electrical, but by light pulses. This means that there is no danger of electric shock at all.

  • Possibility to connect several services at once through one ONT device.

There are, of course, disadvantages in this connection method:

  • The optical wire is very afraid of sharp bends, which means that it will be difficult to bring it around the apartment to distant rooms. It is also not recommended to put furniture and other heavy objects on the cable.

  • Although there is nothing of value in the cable, the main lines and wiring in the entrances are constantly threatened by vandals.

  • Electricity is not transmitted through the cable, therefore, on the part of animals, there is an increased interest in it. It is advisable to hide it in boxes.
