Initially, I want to show the basic setting for blocking ads in the browser (if this does not help, then you most likely have ad modules or as they are called AdWare).

It is quite simple to recognize AdWare - it is a pop-up flashy advertisement in the browser on all pages (for example, a volcano casino may be advertised on yandex, or a browser with ads may open spontaneously).

It is clear that this is not normal ... so I want to tell you about the method of blocking Yandex Browser (now I use it myself and can recommend it to you). In the instructions, we will consider universal options that are suitable even for Internet Explorer or EDGE. Let's take a look at both paid and free extensions - don't switch, it will be interesting!

How to remove ads in Yandex browser

You know what I like about the Yandex browser? - it contains a lot of useful things for a Russian-speaking user. In addition, there is a built-in ability to filter ads using a third-party AdGuard service. (I previously used Adblock plus, but after switching from Firefox to J. Browser, it makes no sense to install a third-party extension)... Turning on this extension is elementary - open the menu and go to "Add-ons" ... well, enable the "Adguard" extension.

By default, ads from Yandex and Google will not be blocked (and there are normal ads there, sometimes even useful) - it is up to you to disable it or not. On my own I want to add that sometimes it is the only way the author of the resource to earn money ... after all, you have to pay for hosting, spend time writing posts like this one. Well, monetization is a great motivator to develop and fill your resource.

Well, it was a small lyrical digression - you can go to the extension settings and disable the "Allow search advertising and own site promotions" item. Thus, you completely disable all advertisements known to the extension on sites.

ADGUARD is a great ad blocker for any browser

Since we are talking about ad blocking, it would be simply a crime not to talk about the wonderful AdGuard app. But what if I tell you that you can block ads not only in the browser, but also in various applications where it is often found? Skype, Viber, uTorrent - all these programs are popular and constantly annoying with ads, but AdGuard will automatically remove them all. You can download it on the official website ...

AdGuard deserves a separate note, which I plan to write in the future, but for now, a small overview of the possibilities

Installation, as elsewhere, did not come up with anything new ... however, I would advise not to install the recommended products (well, if we want, we will install it ourselves, I do not like this obsession)

What to tell about the best app to block ads on your computer? Many people are looking for ways to turn off ads on Skype or torrent, dig into the code, edit something there - it's all real and tested in practice ... but you can just install AdGuard and it will automatically block ads in all popular applications - beauty, isn't it ?!

The Parental Control function seemed to be useful. I don’t know what filters it works with - but the trick is not in blocking porn sites and other bad resources ... but in the impossibility even to find them in the search.

But of course, not without drawbacks - the application is paid, but its price does not exceed the cost of pizza ... support the developers, do not go to torrents! And do not forget - the AdGuard application serves to block ads, it will not help against viruses. You can use a good antivirus for free against any evil spirits.

How to remove ads in Google Chrome and other browsers

Now let's move on to the most easy way get rid of ads in the browser - I used this extension until I switched to Yandex Browser with the AdGuard extension. Suitable for any browser (well, almost all known to me are supported) - just go to the official site of the extension ...

I'll tell you by example Google chrome(but everything is the same for any other - be it Firefox or Opera) - find the biggest button "Install for YOUR_BROWSER". Agree with the installation of the extension and restart your web browser - the lion's share of advertising on sites will disappear.

How do I remove ads in my browser? - Choosing the best

If you are constantly getting ads in your browser, and all of the above methods did not correct the situation, then you have a high probability of a malicious program, browser extension or system settings changed on your computer. All the problems of this infection - they are not seen by antiviruses, in fact it does not harm the computer ... but enrages the user. Let's start with the dismantling of pop-up ads in the browser.

How to remove pop-up ads automatically

With the spread of this infection, it is not surprising that gradually entire companies began to appear that release applications to combat these ad ransomware. Thanks to them, most ad inserts are automatically treated and require virtually no user intervention - I highly recommend using them.

AdwCleaner is an easy way to remove ads from your computer

In order not to strain you especially and not to hammer your head in places in the Windows system that are obscure to an ordinary user, I suggest that you initially try to remove pop-up ads in the browser in automatic mode. There are many software products to remove AdWare, however my experience tells me to stop at AdwCleaner - in my opinion the most the best solution remove all known extensions from any browser.

Task Scheduler - if an advertisement pops up in the browser

The 2017 trend is not a new frameless iPhone, but the problem of users who periodically pop up ads in their browser ... and no program sees them. For the first time I met such a variety at the end of 2016. (and to be honest, for a very long time I could not understand what the problem was)... The situation is as follows - an advertising site was periodically opened, even if the browser was closed.

As it turned out, the malware used the task scheduler and simply periodically launched a task - launch the browser at the required time interval and open the site it needed (! Ingeniously).

To improve the health of our system - open the task scheduler and remove it from there ...

Open the Start menu and type "Task Scheduler" - find it in the search list and open it. Alternative option - press WIN + R on your keyboard and type taskschd.msc

In one of the tasks, you will probably see the path to the browser with a postscript in the form of a site that constantly opens with you - it should be deleted (right-click on the task - delete). There are situations when different sites open all the time - in this case, one site opens, and then redirects to one of many (you just do not have time to notice it) - just delete the dubious tasks with postscripts to the path to the browser file.

Unfortunately, this point is often ignored, but it is one of the most common. No one can be trusted ... there are often cases in which the usual expansion begins to show us all nasty things. We trust him, why should we turn it off and check it ?! We will search in a place where it does not exist ... but until the last moment we will not try to just turn it off for a minute and check.

Hosts file - the reason for advertising in the browser

Many adware use the Windows hosts file for displaying advertisements. Currently, it is practically not used by adware - usually left google addresses are written there or social networks are replaced.

You can fix the hosts file using notepad (which, by the way, needs to be opened as administrator, otherwise you won't be able to save changes in it). It is necessary to delete all lines that are below the lines starting with a hash.

Check for ad blocking, or "Please disable AdBlock"

Popular Internet resources such as Habrahabr, Lifehacker and many others make money on advertising. This is done in order to cover the costs of hosting, salaries to the authors of articles, support and development of the resource.

Developers cannot disable AdBlock for a user, so there are three options left:

1. Nothing to do.
2. Determine if the blocker is enabled for the user and show him a message asking him to disable it on the site.
3. Determine if the blocker is enabled for the user, block access to the site and show a request to disable blocking in order to view the content.

Most often, sites display a message asking you to turn off the blocker. To do this, you need to determine if the user has it enabled. I have 3 solutions to this problem.

Method 1

Use the popular FuckAdBlock script.

Of the minuses- you need to download additionally 6.75 KB.

Method 2

This option is extremely simple and is designed for the fact that AdBlock blocks any loading of external scripts named ads.js. Therefore, we need to create such a file and write in it:

This method is not as reliable as the first, but the file is empty. But the user still needs to upload an empty file, and this is an extra connection. Although if you have http2, then this is not a problem.

Method 3

The third method is based on catching an error event when loading an ad script:

Of the pluses- nothing needs to be loaded and everything works.
Of the minuses- if the user had problems with the connection, and the file for some other reason did not load the script, then he will see a message about some kind of AdBlock, which he may not even know about.

Below is a list of the best free ad blockers. But none of them is perfect, so it is most efficient to use multiple solutions at once.

Types of ads

When choosing the best ad blockers, we adhered to the following criteria:

• Completely free;
• Good user ratings;
• No need to register an account to use;
• Recently updated (in the last 12 months);
• Implementation as a plug-in for at least one browser or operating system;
• Blocks "display ads" (pop-ups, banners, videos, static images, wallpapers, text ads);
• Blocks ads in videos (for example, on YouTube).

To test blockers, we used several sites with different types advertisements... These include Forbes.com, Fark.com, YouTube, and OrlandoSentinel.com.
On Orlando Sentinel, we found aggressive ad formats that most ad blockers can't block. In fact, only a few of them effectively blocked all ads shown on the Orlando Sentinel.

We've tested and rated each of these free tools against the specified criteria. In addition, the ad blockers listed below, with the exception of Stend Fair Adblocker, are open source software.

Best ad blockers - browser plugins and apps

The best ad blocking option is to install a specialized plugin or use a browser with a built-in ad blocker. They interact with websites much more accurately than stand-alone programs that run in the background on your computer.

Stands Fair AdBlocker
It is only available for the Google Chrome browser. With this plugin it is possible to block all types of ads. But it is only available as an add-on for the Google Chrome browser.
Stands Fair AdBlocker is not designed to block ad units, although it can be used for that as well. The development company believes in fair advertising and encourages users to whitelist ads displayed on sites.

Luckily, Stands does a great job at blocking all other ads. Including the aggressive ad formats shown on Orlando Sentinel. Plus display ads, autoplay videos, and YouTube ads.

Adbuard adblock
AdGuard AdBlock was able to block all types of ads. But the biggest drawback of this ad blocker is that all features are only available in the premium version. In this case, the difference between the versions of the blocker is explained only in the help documentation.

Many users rated AdBuard AdBlock positively. It has been downloaded over 4 million times and received high ratings.
When we tested, he turned out to be one of the ad blockers who not only effectively blocked ads displayed on the Orlando Sentinel website, but also did not skip ad frames with the word “advertisement”.

Opera Browser
One of the fastest and most productive browsers. He was one of the first to offer his users a built-in ad blocker.

After enabling adblocker in settings, it blocks almost every ad you come across. But the browser was unable to block interstitial ads on Forbes (the quote blocks that appear in front of the articles). Most of the other ad units have been blocked.
In addition, the Opera adblocker successfully blocked advertisements displayed on Orlando Sentinel.

Adblock plus
Is the most popular software to block ads with over 10 million downloads in Google Chrome alone. It is a free and open source project. Adblock Plus is the basis for many other free ad blockers.

By default, Adblock Plus is designed to block only those advertisements that are deemed intrusive or potentially harmful. Therefore, it requires additional configuration.
If you want to block most of the ads (including automatic video playback), you need to disable the "Allow some non-intrusive ads" option in the settings. Even so, ABP does not block everything.

Adblock Plus was one of the tools that failed to do anything with the ads shown on the Orlando Sentinel. Unfortunately, even the "lock items" feature was unable to help. ABP is good and popular, but far from perfect.

uBlock AdBlocker Plus
Unlike other tools, uBlock AdBlocker Plus is easy to use. However, there are some things the developer could do better. For example, a blocker site is just a page with the name of the plugin and no additional information.

Block AdBlocker Plus effectively blocks most of the ads, but still skips some of them. For example, it did not block the automatic playback of advertisements on one of the sites.

When some advertisements were loading, I used the element blocking feature to block specific ads on the web page. For example, on the Orlando Sentinel, element locking worked great. And its application did not lead to page reloads (as was the case with other ad blockers).

uBlock Plus Adblocker
The biggest drawback of this plugin is that it has an awkward interface. There are several settings that are activated using switches. But most of the work involves digging into the parameters. However, uBlock Plus Adblocker effectively blocked all advertisements, including autoplay videos.

The main advantage of the plugin is the presence of a large library of third-party filters. The tool also includes advanced custom settings that allow you to create your own content filters.
During testing, uBlock Plus Adblocker blocked most of the advertisements. But I couldn't do anything with the banner ads shown on the Orlando Sentinel.

AdBlocker Genesis Plus
If you've used uBlock Origin or AdBlock Plus, this plugin will work for you. AdBlocker Genesis Plus is a fork of other popular plugins. It uses the same basic source code but implements many of its own functionality.

Its user interface is slightly different, but the ad blocking functionality is the same. The plugin developer claims to have deliberately removed the tracking code from the uBlock / AdBlock Plus source code to ensure more privacy.

This ad blocker has a high rating (4.34 out of 5) based on over 100,000 ratings. But I found that Genesis Plus does not block all advertisements. On one site, this plugin blocked simple display ads (Fark.com), but was unable to block a display ad on Orlando Sentinel.

Main advantages: no tracking code, simple whitelist button, item blocking button.

Adblock Ultimate
Open source project. The tool allows you to fight most advertisements. In testing, it was able to block YouTube ads and most display ads on websites. This ad blocker has high ratings: 4.84 out of 5 from Google Chrome users and over 600,000 installations.

The plugin was unable to handle the ads shown on the Orlando Sentinel. He did not block ads broadcast on this site at all. But for those who only need to cut out most of the ads, this is a good option. Unfortunately the plugin hasn't been updated in over a year. Because of this, his grade was lowered.

NoScript

This tool is only suitable for Firefox and is more of a script blocker, not an ad blocker. NoScript prevents all types of scripts from loading on web pages: JavaScript, Java, Flash and others. You can allow loading of certain types of scripts. But by default, the tool applies a fairly “hard” filter.

As a result of its work, most display ads are blocked. Including aggressive ads on Orlando Sentinel, which other tools did not cope with. But NoScript doesn't block ads in videos at all.

You may have heard of the popular adblockers Privacy Badger and Ghostery. The fact is that these plugins are not designed to block ads, but to opt out of ads and other site elements that violate user privacy. As a result, they both block certain types of advertisements. But first and foremost, the tools are aimed at protecting privacy.

A version of AdBlock was also released for Firefox, but for some unknown reason Firefox removed it from the extensions page. In AdBlock, you can enable acceptable ad variations for YouTube and Google search, but it is disabled by default.

2. AdBlock Plus for Chrome and Firefox

An equally well-known ad blocker, but its effectiveness is questionable, since it introduced "white lists" for advertisements. This extension is available for Opera, Safari and Internet Explorer web browsers. It also works in Android browsers.

3. AdBlock Pro for Chrome

The same as AdBlock Plus, but with a simplified interface and no whitelisting. The extension icon is located right in the address bar and, when clicked, offers only 3 options: disable, create a filter and enter settings.

4. Adguard for Chrome and Firefox

Adguard is simple to use and allows you to quickly add additional blocking scripts. The main product of Adguard is a shareware application that is installed on your OS and does not require the installation of add-ons or extensions in the browser.

5. AdRemover for Chrome

It is based on AdBlock scripts and is identical to it (except for regular obsessive requests for project support). The differences between ad blockers are mostly cosmetic.

6. Ghostery for Chrome and Firefox

Blocks analytics scripts, widgets, web beacons, privacy scripts and ads. Allows you to enable or disable scripts separately for each site. Also available for Opera, IE, Safari and mobile OS.

7. Simply Block Ads! for chrome

Another clone of Adblock. Has not been updated since late 2014 and it is possible that not all ads will be filtered. However, it is very easy to use and is the only browser extension that does not send usage statistics to developers.

8. SuperBlock AdBlocker for Chrome

Built on top of Adblock by the same developer who made AdRemover. Contains minor changes to the filter list.

9.μ Adblock for Firefox

A primitive blocker in which you don't need to dig into the settings. Allows you to separately enable or disable buttons social networks... Has not been updated for a long time.

10.µBlock Origin for Chrome and Firefox

• AdBlock Edge for Firefox

The developer does not currently support the project.

• AdvertBan for Firefox

Has not been updated since 2012 and is therefore ineffective.

Test for ad blockers

To avoid inaccuracies in the test, we selected 10 different sites (news agencies, gaming portals). On each of them, we turned on the ad blocker and refreshed the web page 10 times, and then calculated the average by the parameters. For Google Chrome, these are:

Page load time. The time it takes for the web page to fully load. Caching is disabled. This parameter can be viewed on the "Network" tab in the developer tools.

The amount of RAM used. The RAM consumed by the extension can be viewed in the Chrome Task Manager (opened by pressing Shift + Esc). We took the maximum value for 10 page loads.

Unfortunately in Mozilla Firefox it is impossible to see the CPU load and memory usage for each extension, so we only estimated the page load time. Also, for the purity of the experiment, we tested the page loading speed without blocking ads.

Tests were carried out on a laptop with a Core Duo 2.2GHz core, 4GB of RAM, Windows 7, and a Wi-Fi connection. All ad blockers are configured by default, except for Ghostery, in which we selected the "Block ads only" option during installation.

Results for Chrome:

• Page load time. The result shows that the ad blocker cuts page load times by two-thirds. The page is rendered fastest with μBlock and slowest with Adblock Plus.
• RAM usage. Ghostery proved to be the best with a maximum consumption of 37 MB of memory, and the worst of all - SuperBlock, which "ate" 113 MB.
Here μBlock performed well, but AdBlock Plus turned out to be the most resource-intensive.

Results for Firefox:

• Page load time. Firefox is generally slower to load pages than Chrome. In terms of page load time, all ad blockers were on par, with the exception of µBlock Origin, which was just 0.4 seconds ahead of the rest.

Identifying Adblock and other ad blockers

What all ad blockers have in common is that as a result of their activity, the ad unit has a zero height. This means that we will define the problem in this way.
Let's assume that the site has adsense installed. Then in javascript the code will look something like this:

This was the simplest example, which, when it detects ad blocking, displays a window with a request to add the site to the adblock whitelist. Of course, it will be annoying, and the number of page bounces can grow, which negatively affects the behavioral factors of the page. Therefore, you can, for example, display referral links instead of the ad block, having previously shortened them through shorteners, for example vk.cc, or using a redirect through your own domain. And do not mention incriminating names like ad, adblock, ads, banner, and the like, otherwise the adblock won't let them through.

I personally prefer to pick up banners or other themed ads. The banner may ask you to disable Adblock or add the site to the white sheet. You can type HTML yourself, but I'll show you a variant with an image below.
