You go to a new job. The first time at a new job: how to join the team

Dear readers, today's article is about how to behave during the first days at work. We will look at how to prepare the day before, as well as what actions in a new place will be unacceptable. You will learn what the onboarding process involves.

Training

It is very important when communicating with a future employer to ask him a few questions.

  1. Find out who you can ask for advice.
  2. Check the work schedule.
  3. Find out if there is a dress code.
  4. Write down a list of all the documents required for getting a new job.
  5. Additionally, you can find the organization's website and ask for information on it.

If I go to work for the first time, in the evening I have to think over and prepare everything:

  • pick up clothes, shoes necessary for work;
  • prepare all documents according to the list;
  • think over the morning routine;
  • plan what will be the way from home to work, taking into account the possibility of delays in transport, and how much time you need to take it.

First day

As you know, the first impression is remembered for a long time, so you need to follow certain rules that will allow you to better integrate into the team. Let's look at exactly what actions need to be performed in the first 24 hours in a new place.

  1. Feel free to take the initiative to meet new colleagues.
  2. Be sure to organize your workspace.
  3. Understand the features of functioning in the office.
  4. Be observant.
  5. Determine what the routine is. Stick to it.

Stages of adaptation

Once in a new place, even if you previously worked in a similar position, you still have to go through four adaptation stages.

  1. At first, an assessment of the social and professional skills of the new employee will be carried out.
  2. At the second stage, it is important to familiarize yourself with all the responsibilities, including job duties.
  3. On the third - a person joins the team. Shows up socially and professionally.
  4. The final stage represents the transition to the excellent performance of their duties. The last stage can last up to a year and a half.

Basic Rules

In order for the first day at a new job to be successful, you must adhere to special rules.

  1. Try to become your own in a new team. Your task is to join it as soon as possible, to adapt to the new environment. You must understand that you are in a well-formed team and now it is important to follow the established rules and not violate them.
  2. Try to overcome strong excitement, it is very important to remain calm. Your body does not need extra stress. You must be prepared for the fact that on the first day you will not be able to achieve high victories.
  3. Be quiet, not defiant. Remember that when you first meet, you are judged on the basis of personal qualities, and not on the level of professionalism.
  4. Don't forget to pay attention to your appearance. It is important that he is not defiant. It is best to dress according to the local dress code.
  5. Try to talk less and listen more.
  6. It is extremely important to be at the workplace at the appointed time. Otherwise, the boss will conclude that he is irresponsible and disorganized.
  7. Smile more often. Thus, you will win over the interlocutor. Only it should be a sincere smile, and not forced, through teeth.
  8. Observing the behavior of employees, you can notice similar traits in someone, try to make friends.
  9. Observe, identify who is the authority in the team, try to make friends with him, get support.
  10. If you come across people who will look past you, then you should not pay attention to them and get upset. Firstly, you can’t please everyone, and secondly, over time they can change their minds.
  11. Make friends with colleagues in neutral territory, for example, in a cafeteria or at some kind of corporate events.
  12. Adequately respond to the fact that in the first week you will not be able to get good results.
  13. If necessary, do not hesitate to ask experienced workers for advice on a particular issue.
  14. When communicating, keep your palms open, do not cross your legs or pinch. Otherwise, the interlocutors will immediately feel your insecurity, excessive excitement.
  15. No need to try to please everyone and follow their instructions. You must immediately make it clear that you can help in any matters, but you do not intend to fulfill every request of your colleagues. It is important to speak in a polite tone.

When I found myself at a new place of work, I behaved quietly, practically did not speak, and was engaged in direct duties. And at that time she herself observed, evaluated her colleagues, determined who possessed what qualities. I noticed that in the team there are people close in spirit. And only then began to communicate more and made new friends. So gradually the adaptation to the new environment took place.

What not to do

  1. You can not clog, go into yourself. The longer you put off meeting new colleagues, the more difficult it will be to cross this barrier.
  2. Don't be arrogant.
  3. You don't have to try to be everyone's favorite.
  4. Do not fall for provocative actions on the part of employees.
  5. If you are invited to the next corporate party, you should not get drunk there.
  6. You can not expose your troubles for general discussion.
  7. Do not, under any circumstances, conduct an audit at a neighboring workplace. Even if the company decided to use each other's phones. You are not in that position yet.
  8. You can’t praise yourself, talk about your achievements, about your experience in a previous job.
  9. Do not flatter colleagues and superiors.
  10. No need to establish new orders, try to become a leader.
  11. Defend your innocence in ignorance of the matter.
  12. To talk about close relationships with superiors, in fact, to admit to the device through pull.

Remember that in every company there is an already formed team, and the work is done according to an established scheme. It is very important to go to a new place in a great mood, no stress. Don't forget to behave

Summer is a traditional period of "calm" in the labor market. But in the fall, thousands of employees join new teams: someone gets their first job, and someone changes the company or field of activity.

“The first three months of a job in a new job is essentially a continuation of the interview,” says Amanda Augustine, an expert at TheLadders, a job search service for professionals. “From the very first day you have to be in good shape,” she explains.

Having advised high-level professionals for many years, Amanda shares some of her observations about how employees behave in the workplace, who subsequently take root in the team and achieve success.

1. Get to know

Don't wait for colleagues to come up to you to get to know each other - take the initiative. Greet and chat with new people at every opportunity: in the elevator, in the kitchen, in the smoking room. “Co-workers may not have time for a long conversation with a newcomer,” says Amanda. “Start with those people who are closest to you, with those who work directly with you.” In addition, colleagues themselves are interested in you adapting to work in the company as quickly as possible - after all, your activities affect the overall result.

2. Make friends with someone who has been here for a long time and can help with advice.

Find out which colleagues have been working for the company long enough to be aware of all the intricacies of corporate policy. Find a "veteran" who has already learned what approaches work and what doesn't, and ask him to help you get used to the new place. “Each company has its own slang and inside jokes, stories from the life of the team,” says Amanda Augustine. “Instead of trying to understand cultural subtleties on your own, find a person who will help you decipher the local “communication codes” and initiate you into rules of conduct."

In addition, you will need someone to go to with stupid questions: where to get a pencil, who is in charge of computer repairs, when water and cookies arrive. Going to the manager with such problems is ridiculous, but asking a colleague about the little things is quite appropriate.

3. Set expectations

"Work according to the expectations of your superiors," advises Amanda. Try to find out at the interview what kind of results are expected from your work and by what criteria you will be evaluated. The first 3 months are best spent working on "meeting expectations".

If you have taken a leadership position, make sure that your new subordinates are aware of your requirements. The first week of work can determine the direction and tone of all future communications.

4. Find out who is on your team

Pay attention to how your colleagues react to you. It is possible that you took a place that someone from more experienced employees was aiming for. So do not relax right away, but watch the non-verbal signals and what they say behind your back. At the same time, it is worth helping colleagues and generally behaving as kindly as possible in order to avoid insults and misunderstandings, at least in the first months of work.

5. Remember where the coffee is

Purely domestic issues can destroy not only the family, but also relationships in the team. A newcomer, although cute and professional, but always rearranging the sugar bowl in the common kitchen, is insanely annoying. So try at first to return things exactly where you got them from, learn your office habits and get used to them.

6. Fit the legend

It does not matter how you managed to get hired, and what exactly you talked about your talents and skills in an interview. It is important that at least in the first few weeks you are as close as possible to the impression that you made at the interview.

If you've been focusing on your social media or analytical talents, set up a company account or start preparing summary reports on office performance. It is important that this activity is noticed by management. At the beginning of cooperation, you will already receive enough attention - so feel free to show what you are working on. Prepare a complete list of your tasks and successes. If it is not useful to you now, then it will do for future recertifications or as an argument for demanding a raise in your salary.

7. Ask, ask, ask

The worst thing you can do in the first week of work is to remain silent in the corner. If you are planning to build a career in a company or change the usual course of things in the office, first figure out how everything really works here. In addition, the desire to learn about the usual rhythm of office life will help win the favor of colleagues. As you know, it is not customary to go to a foreign monastery with its charter. And you have a chance to prove that you are ready to learn and adapt to others - at least in small things.

8. Organize your work

You will have to absorb a lot of new information, even if you came to a job that you did for a long time, but in a different company. Build your working day reasonably and conveniently so as not to create chaos.

Moving to a new job is also a great opportunity to develop good habits and overcome bad habits. If you have long wanted to start using the time planner, there is no better moment.

9. Show yourself in public

Try to "light up" in front of the maximum number of people. The faster they remember you and start to recognize you, the faster they will get used to you as part of the team. Yes, not everyone is easily given a relaxed behavior in a new place. But just free communication and the absence of tension is an indicator that you have become "one of your own" in the team.

But just "trading face" is not enough. Feel free to speak up on topics in which you consider yourself competent. So you earn yourself the title of an expert in some areas. And if you make a mistake, you, as a beginner, will be forgiven.

10. Make friends with new colleagues on social networks

In the office, there are not so many opportunities for informal communication. Thanks to social networks: in order to get to know a person better and understand how they live, we no longer have to study his habits for years or ask mutual friends. It is better to start "virtual acquaintances" with professional social networks, for example, with LinkedIn (Facebook, and even more so Vkontakte, is perceived by many as an exclusively personal space, where one does not want to allow "just acquaintances").

11. Get to know colleagues from previous jobs

It may sound contradictory, but moving to a new location is a good time to reacquaint yourself with people from the previous team. You may be surprised to learn that the most interesting colleagues are not at all those with whom you worked on the same project, but, for example, an inconspicuous lawyer from a neighboring department. Now, when you are not bound by strict corporate rules and the work "turnover" does not distort the perception of a person, you can make "new old friends".

Another bonus from communicating with former colleagues is that right now, when you are not actively looking for a job, it is easiest for them to write you a couple of recommendations in the same LinkedIn.

12. Find your way to a pharmacy and a normal cafe

Explore the surroundings. Moving to a new job is almost like moving into a new apartment. Few people pay attention to the infrastructure right away, but if necessary, it turns out that there are no “very urgently needed” things nearby. So on your way to work, make a note of where the nearest mall is located, where you can have a bite to eat or drink coffee, where is the pharmacy "in case of emergency" and where it is most convenient to call a taxi. Believe me, all these little things will be very useful to you if you are going to stay in the company for a long time.

Getting used to a new environment, new internal rules is always difficult. When entering a new job, many people experience stress not so much from fear that they will not cope with their duties, but from anxiety about how they will be perceived by colleagues. How to behave in a new place in order to quickly get used to work tasks, make a good impression and make you immediately taken seriously?

First day

Traditionally, a manager introduces a new employee to colleagues. It is good if the company is small or it holds regular general meetings. Then acquaintance with others will happen faster. If you go to work in a corporation, be prepared to get to know colleagues for several weeks, not only through the head, but also in the process of solving problems.

On the first day, the main thing is to be introduced to those with whom you will have to communicate most often and work in close cooperation. Try to remember them. Even better - briefly write down who is called and who is responsible for what. If you have not been introduced - do not hesitate to come up and get to know yourself. The faster you do this, the easier it will be to interact further.

If you forget someone's name, ask again. It's perfectly normal to forget someone if you've been introduced to twenty people in a few hours.

If it’s customary in a company to communicate in a general work chat or in a group on a social network, make sure that you are added there (sometimes managers forget about this in the confusion). It's better to ask about it yourself.

Ask to show you the documents that regulate the work of the department or specifically your labor functions, if any. Of course, you should already be familiarized with everything that is needed for work, and if the organization has a developed corporate culture, then you will also be assigned a curator from among your colleagues to bring you up to date and support you in everything at first. But in the turmoil, they can forget about the formalities, and if all the colleagues are “on fire” at that moment, then the newcomer has to figure everything out on his own. In this case, it is important to be proactive - your success during the trial period depends on this.

Ask colleagues if the office has a dining room or kitchen and where else they have lunch. It's best to go to lunch with them on the first day, even if you usually prefer to dine alone. A joint lunch is a great occasion for a more informal acquaintance. To begin with, you can talk on neutral topics - who lives where, how long it takes to get to work, what other places for lunch are nearby.

First week

Your main task for the first week in communicating with colleagues is to remember everyone, to understand who is who and how you interact with them. Colleagues should also remember you and understand what questions they can contact you about.

At this stage, you should not stick out your talents, even if you already see that you are more experienced than your new colleagues in something. At first, take the position of an observer more and express your opinion within reasonable limits, especially if no one asked about it. It is much more important to prove that you are interested in work tasks, that you do not hack, but delve into the processes in detail and learn new things - these are the most important signs of a true professional in any position.

Ask questions. The main communication rule for the first week: "If you don't know, ask." Ask about everything that makes you even the slightest doubt. Even if it seems to you that these are stupid questions, remember that you have an indulgence - you are new here! It is better to figure out how to do it right than to do it at random. Everyone around is well aware that you are a new employee, and even expect these questions from you.

If you have come to work in a new field for you and do not yet understand the process, ask one of your colleagues to explain it to you step by step. It doesn't have to be your manager or someone senior. It may be more helpful to talk to subordinates or peers. Gradually, you will figure out how everything happens, how much it costs, how much time it takes to implement. If you are a manager, these conversations will help you optimize the processes you run. Here, the fact that you are a beginner can even become a plus: weak points are sometimes more visible from the outside than from the inside, when a person is used to everything and it seems to him that everything is going as it should.

Ruslan Lobachev, content producer, recalls: “From television, I came to work in an online cinema. The sphere is adjacent, but there are a lot of its own details. For the first week, I didn't understand why it took so long to post a movie on the app. It turned out that this is one of the sore spots in the company, and the marketing and content promotion department could not understand why video engineers constantly miss deadlines. In order to understand the production process, I asked the chief video engineer to meet with me and explain the details. After an hour-long lecture, I learned that one movie weighs hundreds of gigabytes, takes a long time to download from the server of the owner company, then archives it to the cinema server, then encodes, then goes through the final stage of preparation, such as subtitles. It is impossible to do all this in one day. From the very first week, I made advance planning a priority in my work. I had to move the release dates of several films and justify this to the marketing department. But within a month, we were able to set up the release process, upload films on time and prepare them ahead of schedule.”

At meetings, feel free to outline the most important things. At first, there will be a lot of information that others understand at a glance, but for you - a dark forest. This is normal: you are new here, you have yet to delve into many nuances, understand the internal processes. This is especially true for large companies with a complex structure. If something is not clear, but you do not want to interrupt the general discussion with your questions, mark these points for yourself and ask your colleagues to bring you up to date after the meeting.

In the new circle there will always be someone who will sympathize with you from the first days and will agree to take the time to give you tips. If you don’t know at all who to turn to for help, ask who in your team was the previous “newcomer” before you - this colleague still has fresh memories of how difficult it was to get used to the new environment, he is best able to understand your feelings and, rather everything, will not dismiss if you ask for help. In order not to distract a colleague from work, the easiest way is to ask him or her to accompany you at lunch and ask the accumulated questions in an informal setting.

Look for feedback. Every day, you don’t need to approach your boss with a request to comment on your work, this is annoying. Come back after the first week (you can write a letter). Next time ask for feedback after the first month, and again after three months. It is good when the company organizes such meetings with each employee, for example, at the end of the trial period. This is usually done by the HR department. At such meetings, they discuss your impressions of the work, give you an objective assessment and together outline possible development paths and goals for the near future. But even if there are no such meetings, ask the leader to meet with you yourself. An adequate boss will never dismiss a newcomer and will find time for him.

First month

Watch your colleagues. Watch how they behave, how they solve work tasks, what is accepted in the team and what is not accepted.

Understand responsibility and differentiate it. Don't do tasks that others should be doing. There are teams where employees try to push their business to a newcomer. Learn to say a firm no if you are sure that this is not your function. And, on the contrary, specify with a direct question, whose task it is, if there is any doubt. In long-established teams, everyone is used to who is responsible for what, and the boss can set the task “into the void”, knowing that the right person will pick it up. If it turns out that in a particular case you should have become such a person, because your predecessor always dealt with such tasks, but no one informed you about this, then, of course, this will not be your fault. But the conflict situation is guaranteed.

Second and third months

It's usually only by the end of the probationary period that you realize who's who in the office. For the first three months you are a beginner. It also works in the opposite direction: colleagues look at you and gradually understand what kind of employee you are, whether you can be trusted with tasks and rely on you. Usually only after three months (and sometimes after six months) you begin to be taken seriously, especially if you are a young specialist.

Remember that others do not know how to read minds and do not understand you perfectly. While you are not yet on the same wavelength with your colleagues, try to convey your thoughts as carefully and calmly as possible. Jokes, by the way, do not always help to defuse the situation, a sense of humor is a subjective thing. First, it’s better to make sure what kind of humor they are used to in this team.

False consensus effect

This is one of the biggest mistakes that can happen to a newcomer to a team. The human brain tends to project its way of thinking onto others. We automatically assume that others think the same as we do, although this may not be the case at all. Therefore, there are misunderstandings in the transmission of information - both oral and written.

When communicating with colleagues in a new team, explain the context of your messages. "Check your watch" to make sure you're talking about the same thing. Everyone has their own quality standards, working tools, habits. Transferring the standard to which you are accustomed to in the same place to the new team, and explaining it with the phrase “But it was like this with us ...” is the same as going to a strange monastery with your charter. And the concept of "we" for you is now here, and not in the same place, although the realization of this does not appear immediately.

Remember that your colleagues may think very differently. For example, you think that after each meeting, the manager who led it should write a short summary letter to everyone who participated in the meeting. And no one in the company has done this before you. To avoid misunderstandings, discuss the benefits of such letters with colleagues.

Well, the most important thing. You came to this company to work, not to make new friends and charm others. Your manager will primarily evaluate the results of your work. Be friendly, but don't try to please everyone. Be interested in what is happening, but do not cross personal boundaries. This is the best way to get comfortable in any team.

How to make a good impression without overstepping personal boundaries

Behave naturally. Don't try to pretend to be someone you really aren't.

Be polite. Observe the rituals established in the team. If you see that colleagues are collecting for a gift to someone in the department, offer to participate. Do not immediately come up with revolutionary ideas. This is not welcome in any established team.

Less emotions. Try to think rationally at work, not emotionally. Something happened? Turn off the emotional reaction and think about how to solve the problem.

Stay neutral. Most likely, after some time you will find friends and allies here. Just like the opponents. All in good time, but first, stay neutral. It is possible that there are ongoing conflicts and other complex relationships in the team that you don’t know about yet, and there are intriguers who can immediately try to drag you into this story that is completely unnecessary for you.

When communicating with colleagues, do not ask them about their personal lives. Don't go into too much detail about yours either. Do not participate in office intrigues and do not be interested in gossip, especially if you work in a women's team. It is better to offer to discuss plans for the weekend or a new movie at the cinema.

Take care of your resume

Starting a new job is a reason to update your resume on the site, indicating in it the start of work in a new place. It might be worth changing the visibility of the resume. If your resume is open to all employers, then your colleagues in a new job can see it and think that you are not going to stay with them and search again.

There are several ways not to leave a resume open to everyone and at the same time not deprive yourself of even more interesting offers (suddenly such will appear):

  • Hide CVs from certain companies. To do this, you need to create your own stop list in a special window.
  • Set the "Visible to selected companies" mode. Great if you have a dream company or several dream companies, and you are always ready to consider offers from them. Your resume will be available for viewing only to those companies that you select in a special window. The rest won't see it.
  • Make the resume anonymous, that is, hide the full name in it. and contacts by which you can be "calculated" by those who know you, and even places of work.
  • Set the visibility of the resume only by direct link. Then no one will find it in the database, but the one to whom you send a link to it will open it. If you respond with such a resume to vacancies on the site, then the employer who received the response will also see the resume.

To set the visibility of your resume, log in to your resume and click on "Change Visibility".

Newcomers usually feel uncomfortable in a new company. A well-organized “introductory course” can help you adapt faster. However, the employee himself should take the initiative. Experts remind: self-confidence and friendly interest are the best assistants on the first working day.

“Nervousness before starting a new job is the normal state of any employee,” assures a counseling psychologist, psychotherapist, director of the Candle psychological assistance service.

If the stress on the eve of your first day at work makes you very stressed and brings unpleasant symptoms (sweaty hands, palpitations, inability to concentrate, etc.), do a small but effective exercise that will take 15-20 minutes. Close your eyes and imagine yourself in a new workplace. Imagine it in detail - the desktop, the view from the window, the color of the cabinet walls, etc. Imagine that you are already working and everything is working out great. Exercise is best done in the evening, for example, before going to bed, for several days before going to a new job. You will feel how the level of excitement will gradually decrease.

Director of recruitment agency "Selectum" Olga Voik I am sure: “In companies where they treat human resources responsibly, if a newcomer is threatened with stress, then it is minimal and short. The exit of a new employee is stressful for both the company and the employee. But stress is not terrible, unless it reaches an exorbitant level. After all, stress is the engine of progress, without it there would be no change. A high level of stress is negative - one that the individual's nervous system cannot withstand. To reduce the negative impact of stress during the period when a newcomer joins the team, there are a number of activities that are usually carried out by the personnel service and managers experienced in managing people. Regular working meetings between the HR manager and the novice and the HR manager with the novice's manager will help track down problems that prevent the new employee from being more effective, complicating the process of integration into the team.”

It is necessary for a beginner to dress in accordance with the position held, advises Olga Voik: “If a new leader comes in old shoes, and there is a Chinese plastic watch on his hand, this will at least surprise his subordinates. The same reaction can be caused by an ordinary employee who appeared in a haute couture outfit. There will be fears - will such an expensive "packed" person be responsible for his duties in an ordinary position?

An ideal option for the first working day is a strict business suit. “Don't despair if it seems that everything is wrong at a new job,” says Olga Voik. - It takes an average of three months for a person to physically adapt to a company, and it may take up to six months for a full psychological adaptation. If during this period something does not work out, it is not possible to establish relations with colleagues, try to figure out the reasons: that this is a “failure of the day” or a systemic problem due to the fact that the values of the company are not close to you. At the same time, remember: all people, changing something in their lives, must adapt to new conditions, and for ALL a new job is stressful. It is important to be able to manage stress, tune in to the positive. And if it becomes very difficult - remember that stress can be "reset": go in for sports, swim, go to the bath, meet close friends, go out into the countryside. And luck in all endeavors will not keep you waiting!

The task of a beginner is to organically join the team and take their place in it without conflicts. The best tactic is to adhere to the “golden mean” in behavior and communication with colleagues, advises Alexandra Imasheva: “Do not show excessive zeal in work, but do not neglect your duties. Be sociable and as open as possible. Don't be afraid to ask for help, but don't be intrusive, don't pester co-workers with unnecessary talk. In the early days, the team will carefully observe you and draw conclusions - take this calmly. Attentiveness and observation will not harm you. Try to immediately delve into the unspoken hierarchy of relations within the team, understand the customs, character traits of colleagues. Remember their names - people like to be called by their first name or first name (depending on age and position).

Another rule: do not speak disparagingly about the previous place of work and former colleagues. In general, try not to radiate negativity: do not enter into arguments and defend your opinion harshly or defiantly demonstrate your competence (even if you really are more competent). Do not criticize colleagues either in their presence or behind their backs. It is better not to overdo it with the positive. Many, wanting to show their friendly attitude, strive on the very first day to arrange a small feast "for acquaintance" - to bring a cake, sweets for tea. However, this should not be done, especially if it is not known whether tea gatherings are accepted in the company. If you see that such a custom exists, you can bring a treat, say, on the day of the first salary. If you start to get overwhelmed with extra work, you should set boundaries in a friendly but firm manner. In no case do not try to raise your price with excessive zeal and try to please with your reliability. Remember that people of the same gender in a monogender team are perceived as competitors. Therefore, manifestations of rivalry are possible. A woman is usually easily accepted in a male team. Show attention to her, behave gallantly. But often they do not treat her as a serious specialist - they will have to gain their positions with difficulty. A man in a women's team is usually taken seriously from a professional point of view from the first days. But he will become the object of close attention from the point of view of arranging the personal life of his colleagues, he will be “tried on” in terms of personal relationships. It should be taken into account that when interacting with other people, men put the exchange of information at the forefront, and women - feelings and relationships, therefore, when communicating in a male team, special attention should be paid to the content of statements, and in a female team - to the manner of communication and relationships .

And another recommendation: be patient. Even if during the adaptation period, not everything went smoothly from the very beginning, the situation is likely to improve, you just have to wait. It may take weeks or months to feel completely at home."

Finding a good job today is like winning the lottery. If you are lucky, do everything to make the desired place permanent.

Getting started is the key to success. How to behave on the first day at a new job in order to make the right impression on the management, find a common language with colleagues and not scare off customers and partners? There are many subtleties in these matters, but salary and career depend on the right tactics. The hardest thing is for those who are employed for the first time.

You need to prepare yesterday - what to do the day before

The success of the first day can be programmed. To do this, prepare in advance and tune in correctly.

What to check with the employer in advance

When concluding an employment contract, try not to lose your temper, but find out from the management all the necessary information.

  1. Specify the work schedule, the exact start time, is there a break.
  2. Ask questions about the dress code if there are no strict uniform requirements. Or just take a look at what others are wearing.
  3. Find out who will be your line manager and who you should contact if you have questions. Remember the names and positions.
  4. Find out what to bring with you. You may need to change shoes or something else.
  5. If you need to take keys or any other working details, do not forget to ask for them.
  6. Study the location of offices, utility rooms and other rooms so as not to get confused.
  7. If the work is shift work and you will have to work in the place of another employee, be sure to get to know your partner or partner in advance and exchange phone numbers. However, this does not mean that a person needs to be disturbed by every little thing. It is better to call only in case of emergency.
  8. It is advisable to get to know the team in advance, ask to be introduced to other employees.
  9. Be calm. Look around the workplace, spend some time nearby to see how a colleague works.

Check if a business phone number, work mail, skype and other means of communication are provided. If not, but you need a connection, create a separate mailbox for yourself with a serious name suitable for the position and communication at work.

If you have to work in forgotten programs, repeat them at home. You can watch instructional videos.

What to wear on the first day of a new job

If your position does not involve wearing a uniform and the company does not have strict clothing requirements, make up your own wardrobe.

  1. Try to dress neutrally on the first day, focusing on the appearance of your new work colleagues.
  2. Go in what you are used to. You should not wear a dress if you like trousers, otherwise you will correct it all day and think about how it fits. For the same reason, it makes no sense to buy a new thing for the first working day.
  3. Clothing should be comfortable and seasonal in order to feel comfortable in the environment in which the working day is to be spent.
  4. Take care of comfortable shoes, do not take risks and put on new shoes that can rub your feet. High heels should be chosen only by those who are already.
  5. Do not abuse jewelry, first prove yourself as a valuable employee, and only then you can become a trendsetter.

How not to forget anything and sleep

In order to be cheerful, focused and efficient on the first day at work, you need to sleep well and relax. Try to adjust your routine a few days before employment, as it is difficult to readjust on the last evening.

Go to bed and wake up earlier. If it is difficult to fall asleep, exclude invigorating factors: stop drinking coffee in the afternoon, refuse sports in the evenings, stop watching movies and programs that upset or excite you.

Do not pass at night, but do not torment yourself with hunger. In the evening, you can eat protein foods, such as chicken breast or boiled egg white. It's better than going to bed thinking about food.

Try not to eat unfamiliar dishes and foods that can cause you digestive problems or allergic reactions the night before. For breakfast, prepare something neutral and proven.

In the evening, prepare everything you need:

  • iron your clothes and think about what shoes you will go in;
  • collect a bag, it should contain everything you need for personal needs, cosmetics, medicines, if you take them daily. You can grab something for diarrhea if you have such a nervous problem;
  • do not forget the documents;
  • take care of cash if you use a card;
  • grab two small chocolates, they will help to cope with excessive excitement or frustration.

You may need to take a cup or other utensils, wet wipes, paper towels.

Set two alarm clocks with a margin of time to take into account all the force majeure of morning fees, traffic jams, traffic problems and other nuances.

How to behave in a new team on the first day

It is very difficult to figure out how to behave with colleagues and management at a new job on the first day, because people are not always what they seem. Therefore, try to be neutral, do not rush to prove yourself and demonstrate to others all your advantages and disadvantages.

  1. Behave equally friendly with employees, subordinates and management. Hold back your emotions.
  2. Identify an informal leader and try to please him, but naturally and imperceptibly even for him.
  3. Don't be nosy and don't ask co-workers personal questions. Do not rush to tell all the details about yourself, especially if they do not ask. You can still make friends.
  4. Don't brag about past accomplishments - this can be taken as arrogance.
  5. You can ask questions, but do not overdo it, so as not to seem inattentive and unwilling to deal with your duties yourself.
  6. It is not necessary to show all your best qualities on the very first working day at a new job. There are always fewer requirements for beginners, so leave your attractive sides and talents in reserve.
  7. You should not offer your help to others unless asked and there is no special need for it. Colleagues may not like it.
  8. Do not get carried away with tea drinking, even if others allow themselves to do it every hour. And don't attack the free corporate treats.

Immediately learn to politely but confidently refuse, citing your deeds and incompetence, if asked to do something that is beyond your duties.

On the first day at a new job, most likely, you will have to learn new things and learn tools.

  1. If the work is computer-related, write down all passwords and logins so you don't have to ask them the next day. Find out how the network works, if any, what programs and folders are shared, and how to access them.
  2. Ask to show how office equipment works, you should not study expensive equipment at random.
  3. If the specifics of the job allows, devote the first day to studying the documents. Get into everything so that you can work in the coming days without asking unnecessary questions and without making mistakes.
  4. When working in the same place with others, do not rush to put things in order and shift documents and things.
  5. If you have to ask for something from colleagues, immediately return it, even if it is scissors or a pencil.
  6. When working with clients, ask someone to tell you what kind of client it is, whether it is a regular one and how loyal it is to the company.

  • Do not rush to tell your friends and acquaintances about your successful employment.
  • Take your time to order business cards and bring a lot of personal items to your new job.
  • Place coins in the corners of your office to "conjure" a good salary.
  • Be friendly not only to people, but also to working tools - a computer, cash register, printer.
  • After a few days, bring a cactus, its thorns will neutralize negative energy.

How to behave the first day at work as a leader

It is even more difficult for a boss to join a new team, because you can immediately lose credibility.

  1. Try to find out in advance how it was customary to address the leader in this company - democracy reigned there or stricter procedures were in effect.
  2. Specify how it is customary to address each other - by first name or by first name and patronymic. If in doubt, introduce yourself by your first and last name.
  3. Get to know the team and find out who does what and who is responsible for what.
  4. Try to remember the names of those who will have to constantly contact. Learn the rest later.
  5. Dress so as not to arouse the envy of subordinates, but also not to look like a “gray mouse” against their background.
  6. Do not rush to change the routine from the first days, otherwise there is a risk of disrupting the workflow and losing experienced employees.
  7. Make it a rule right away that your job is to lead, not to do the work of others.
