Selection of lighting equipment for the studio. Photo studio rental

1. Studio equipment. Types of light sources.

Studio equipment can be divided into two types: pulsed and constant light sources.
Pulsed and constant light sources are equally used in photography, studio and location shooting. Also, in the practice of filming, photographers use combined light (pulsed and constant at the same time).
On lighting devices of pulsed light, lamps of constant light (pilot light) are additionally installed. Lamps of constant (pilot) light are used to illuminate the object, improve focus, preliminary visual assessment of the illumination of the subject, analysis of the cut-off pattern.

One of the biggest benefits of using constant light is the visual representation of the image before shooting. The advantage of pulsed light is: high energy of the light beam, low energy consumption.

1.2. Light fixtures

We distinguish two types of light pulsed devices:

Monoblock - a type of pulsed flashes in which the lighting device and the control compartment are in one block. Monoblocks are easy to transport, have small dimensions, operate on mains or battery.

Generator - consists of two components: a generator (control unit) and a paw block. The generator can be installed on the floor or attached to a tripod. The generator has a number of advantages over the monoblock system, but has increased dimensions and weight.

1.2.1 Characteristics of light pulse devices. Adjusting the camera before shooting based on the characteristics of the lighting fixtures.

The lighting devices used in the studio have a number of characteristics that should be taken into account when organizing the shooting process and camera settings. Let's highlight some of them:

Colorful temperature. It is measured in degrees Kelvin (̊ K) and usually varies between 5500 - 5600 ̊ K. Color temperature is directly related to the concept of White Balance (WB). When setting the camera parameter, you should select one of the white balance modes:
- by flash
- white sheet
- sunlight
- 5600 ̊K
It should be taken into account that the presence of powerful constant light (pilot) to illuminate an object can give additional color overlays due to the difference in the color temperature of constant (3200 ̊ K) and pulsed (5600 ̊ K) light. Therefore, in some pulsed devices, during the operation of the pulsed light, the constant (pilot) light is automatically turned off.

impulse energy. It is measured in Joules (J) and usually in small studios has a value of 100 to 1000 J. The power of the pulse energy can be found from the marking of the lighting device. For example, Hensel Expert D 1000 has a pulse energy of 1000 J.

The presence of constant light (pilot) from 60 - 1000 W, depending on the power of the light device.
- Pulse duration. Flash lamp duration. Declared in the technical characteristics of the flash. Typically, studio flashes have a flash duration of 1/800 of a second. To "freeze" objects, flashes with a short pulse (from 1/2500 sec) are used. The higher the flash pulse energy, the longer the flash pulse.
- Reload time. Taken into account when shooting dynamic objects.
- Bayonet - a place to mount light nozzles on the flash. There are standardized mounts (Bowens, Hensel, etc.). Certain nozzles are suitable for certain brands of lighting fixtures.

1.3. Attachments for lights

The presence of additional nozzles for lighting devices expands the possibilities of using pulsed and constant light sources. Depending on the nozzle used, it is possible to obtain a soft or hard light beam, diffused (filling) or directed. The right choice of light attachments will allow you to get the desired result in shooting.
List of the most common light nozzles with a soft light beam of directional and diffuse action:

softbox- the most common light nozzle is square or rectangular. It includes a frame made of rods, on which a special material is stretched. The front part is covered with a fabric that acts as a screen that diffuses the light flux. The inner surface of the softbox has a reflective layer. As a rule, a silver metallized or simply white coating is applied to the inner surface, while the outer part is usually black.

Octobox– octagonal circular nozzle. It is made according to the principle of softbox. Creates a soft, diffused fill action light. It is often used in Beauty shooting to obtain uniform lighting, with a slightly pronounced light-shadow pattern.

Strip box- a soft light source of directional action. The design resembles a softbox, but in size it has an elongated shape with a width of up to 30-40 cm. Strip boxes are mainly used for making full-length portraits.

Umbrellas- used for soft distribution of light. Very weak shadows. Umbrellas come in two types, translucent and reflective. Translucent umbrellas have low reflectivity due to the translucency of the fabric and are applicable when it is necessary to simultaneously reduce the influence of pulsed light and create a fill backlight. Reflective umbrellas have a dense surface with high reflectivity. They are easy to use and are the simplest and most convenient light attachment. The disadvantage is the impossibility of forming a narrow beam of light.

Also, there are light nozzles with a hard light beam of directional and diffused action. Their main advantage is that they can be used both independently and in combination with other nozzles (with umbrellas, filters, etc.). Such nozzles form a directed beam of light.

“Portrait plate” “Beauty Dish”. Due to the design feature of the “beauty dish”, the light is both concentrated and soft. This is one of the most popular attachments for fashion shoots.

Background reflectors. To illuminate the background, special-shaped reflectors are used, which not only distribute the light evenly, but also help to exclude its unwanted entry into the camera lens.

tube- This is a nozzle on a conical reflector for creating a dense and narrow beam of light. Tubes are used to highlight details on an object or background. The tubes can be used in parallel with honeycombs (honeycomb is an additional nozzle on the tube), which gives almost parallel beams of light at the output.

curtains- to adjust the luminous flux and represent a nozzle with 4 movable wings. Curtains are used to illuminate the background and control backlight.

Additional items and accessories:

Color filters. Change the color of the light beam. Unlike filters for lenses, which act on the entire frame, attachments are installed on individual lamps and allow you to change the color of the light pointwise.

Synchronizing devices. Synchronizing devices are used to connect the camera and the source of pulsed light. They come in several types: radio and infrared synchronizers, sync cable. Also in the studio, in the absence of a synchronizer, it is possible to synchronize with an external flash, which is set in M mode.
Radio synchronizers are the most convenient to operate and, therefore, the most popular in photo studios. A radio channel is used to transmit the control signal.

Infrared synchronizers perform synchronization using an infrared communication channel. The disadvantages include the small range of such devices.
Sync cable is the cable that connects the camera and the light source. Not all cameras have a socket for connecting a sync cable.

We will introduce you to the concept of creating an entry-level photo studio. Creating your own photography studio involves making many decisions, and as long as they turn out to be correct, so successful and fruitful will be the work of the photographer. We will tell you what you need to open a photo studio and what you need to create a home photo studio.

To begin with, let's dwell on the process of choosing equipment. Often, the decisive factor in this choice is the budget allocated for the creation of a photo studio and the price of equipment. At first glance, this seems to be absolutely correct, because a photo studio is, ultimately, just an ordinary commercial enterprise, designed, first of all, to bring material profit, and only then all the wonderful benefits and torments of creativity. Therefore, at the initial choice, it is not at all surprising that the desire to reduce the cost of a set of equipment. We begin, completely without caring about the consequences, to turn our eyes to the products of dubious brands, motivating this by the opportunity to save on what at first seems to us to be “secondary” in the work of a photographer. It's strange, but no one thinks about buying cameras of dubious origin. On the contrary, the process of buying a camera, choosing your future system, is the “first” and “most important” ... But this is not about us. We decided to build a photo studio, and learned the translation of the word “photography” very well. Therefore, we know which component, first of all, will create our image, and which component will only fix what we created on the media. In the process of choosing lighting equipment, we will focus on the best that is presented on the global and Russian photo market.

We will try to carefully understand the question: is it appropriate to equip an entry-level photo studio with devices from a world brand that is at the top of the photographic Olympus. To do this, we must highlight the criteria by which we will evaluate the light for a photo studio. In all areas of consumption, the price-quality ratio is considered to be decisive. There is a price that allows us to ignore the quality, and a quality where we don't care about the price. I think many will be pleased to know that the cost of sets of Profoto D1 monoblocks, battery and studio generators of the Acute2 series, does not differ much from the offer of some companies that have been in the “middle class” for several decades and produce quite high-quality products. We will try to highlight the most important factors for the photographer.

So, the first is the “quality of light”. For some, this may be a very dubious and not entirely clear criterion, but I think professionals will understand and support me. What does it consist of? Usually this is a somewhat personal criterion for assessing the nuances of the illumination of the frame, which is based, oddly enough, on serious engineering developments. The quality of light largely depends on the type of lamps used (in this case, pulsed ones), their coating, and the overall quality of the circuitry components of the device. Next up are the light shaping tools. Softboxes with premium reflective coating and diffusers that do not tend to turn yellow after a month, but remain white for years to come. Reflectors, in the production of a reflective coating of which the most modern sputtering technologies and various chemical components are used. Carefully thought-out form and zooming technology, which is one of the main directions of the philosophy of creating the entire model range of devices and light-shaping tools. All this allows us to talk about the unique, excellent quality of Profoto light. Believe me, both those who use it (the photographer) and those who use the result of their use (the customer) note this.

Third, ease of operation. Profoto products are called “assistant equipment”. You or your assistant will not spend more than five minutes to understand how this or that device is controlled. Everything is completely transparent and intuitive. The design of the mount is such that it will not take more than 10 seconds to change any soft box, even the largest one, and the use of zoom technology in controlling reflectors sometimes allows you not to change them at all during shooting, but only by moving them to change the angle of illumination.

So, now we can directly deal with the selection of lighting equipment for a photo studio from the entire Profoto line of products. And now again we remember about the budget and priorities in activities. We are going to build an entry-level photo studio, for many, just the first photo studio.

Acute Series (1200/2400)

High power, excellent consumer qualities, such as reliability, long service life, small size and weight, stable performance and, finally, low price - these devices have gained popularity among photographers around the world. The asymmetric/symmetric control system, built-in radio synchronization system and 7-step flash power adjustment allow the photographer to reach their full potential in most shooting situations that do not require special functions.

AcuteB2 series

The AcuteB2 generator is compact in size and light in weight. Regardless, this battery-operated flash generator has all the functionality you need to create high-quality lighting anywhere. The ability to adjust the power to up to seven f-stops gives the photographer complete creative freedom. With 2/10 f-stop energy settings, this device gives you the confidence that your photos will be exactly what the photographer expects. Short pulses give the image extra clarity, and thanks to the high recycle speed, there is no need to wait long for the pulse to be ready.

The AcuteB2 series includes the following pulse generators:

  • AcuteB2 600 AirS Pb;
  • AcuteB2 600 AirS Life.

The AcuteB2 600 AirS LiFe models come with a LiFePO4 (LiFe) battery, while the AcuteB2 600 AirS Pb models come with a lead acid (Pb) battery. For best performance, weight savings and longer battery life, it is recommended to use AcuteB2 models with a LiFe battery.

The Profoto Air radio system allows wireless synchronization (not remote control) of all AcuteB2 generators.

Longer service life than monoblocks and resistance to sloppy impact will bring you considerable benefits, and the cost of rent will accelerate the payback time. Your own intensity at work also tips the scales towards the generator system. At the same time, if you are going to occasionally engage in portraiture, portfolio work, creative projects, or improving your own skills, then using the monoblock system is justified. The same is true when you are going to use a large number of appliances. Here the use of a monoblock system is justified both from the point of view of economy and from the point of view of ease of use.

Monoblock system D1

The most advanced system in the Profoto range of flash units was introduced to the market in early 2009 and in the same year was awarded the honorary title of "Best Compact Flash System 2009" by the international association of photographic magazines TIPA.

The system includes three monoblocks with a capacity of 250, 500, and 1000 J, respectively. It is worth noting the modern and ergonomic design of the device, its compact dimensions, which are absolutely the same for all three types of devices. These devices are multivoltage, i.e. equipped with a universal power supply that allows you to use them from a network with a voltage of 90 to 240 V without any adjustments, settings or replacement of lamps. All of them have cooling fans with a thermostatic device.

The pulse power of each monoblock within seven exposure steps in 1/10 steps is controlled on the central display. A 300-watt halogen lamp is used as a modeling light. For ease of use, D1 monoblocks are equipped with the Profoto Air radio remote control system, which allows you not only to start, but also adjust the power of the pulse and pilot light from a distance of up to 300 m. D1 devices can also be controlled from a PC. Of course, the devices have a photocell that allows for conventional light synchronization.

The entire range of Profoto light shaping tips can be used with the D1 Monoblocs. Two strip boxes, a rectangular soft and an octa form the basis of the initial set of lighting tools. This is what you need for a home photo studio. It is recommended to purchase for them, for the first time, at least honeycombs. A beauty dish and a pair of different reflectors (standard zoom + magnum or standard zoom + narrow beam) with honeycombs will greatly expand both your capabilities and your skill.

The Light Shaping Tools

Profoto light shaping attachments have been developed and perfected over the years. As a result, today we have absolutely ideal tools for creating our own style, an author's approach to non-standard lighting solutions, a new - modern photography.

The exclusive, patented system for attaching reflectors, soft boxes and additional tools is a special pride of the company. It is no secret that under prolonged exposure to modeling lamps, reflectors heat up to temperatures that do not allow them to be touched. The photographer working with the Profoto system does not attach much importance to this. The Profoto mount allows you to change from one tool to another in seconds without much effort. In addition, the cornerstone of the Profoto light shaping philosophy is the unique ability, using the same diameter of the working part of all devices, to move the nozzle along the body of the device, change the angle of light scattering, focus it and effectively control the zoom of the light flux.

The Profoto line of tools combines various reflectors and soft boxes, spotlights and huge parabolic reflectors, projection lighting heads and portrait reflector systems. Whether you choose a fixture with a combination of 190 cm flash lamps and get the thinnest streak of light or a fixture that illuminates a circle with a diameter of 5 cm, your light will still be perfectly accurate, perfectly even and perfectly beautiful. Just select the right tool, turn it on, adjust and control it.

Do not forget, not only can not buy everything, but you do not need to. Many of the special light shaping tools, as well as the most beautiful and powerful generators, are always available for rent. The main thing is that you create the basis of studio lighting, the superstructure of which will be your success and the success of your business.

The photographer's toolkit is not limited to the camera. In order to take an outstanding picture, they spend a lot of time choosing the right lighting. At the same time, outdoor shooting differs from studio shooting - the latter must be equipped with the appropriate equipment, with which one must be able to work. We will devote the article to these aspects. It is important to understand that exhibiting light is an art. Therefore, within the framework of one material, it will not work to cover all the intricacies of the process, but we will draw up a general idea of \u200b\u200bhow to choose and set the light in a photo studio.

Lighting equipment: what to prioritize

If there is no experience in equipping a photo studio with the necessary devices, but you really want to make your own creative corner, then be guided by three main principles:

  • The power of the lighting fixtures must be sufficient
  • The price should match the quality and needs
  • "Light" must be universal

This is the answer to the question "how to choose a light for a photo studio." There are no universal recipes, only general recommendations. The rest depends on your tastes and preferences.

Let's analyze each point in more detail. For the equipment of a small studio, powerful lighting devices are not required, but frankly weak "lights" are stupid to acquire. Therefore, if you are a beginner and have chosen your own home as a platform for creativity, a relatively inexpensive kit will suffice. For more serious goals, you will need to invest more money.

It is important to be able to navigate brands. Certain well-deserved brands of equipment frankly inflate prices, so you should look for suitable lighting fixtures among lesser-known, but equally high-quality brands. Also, don't forget functionality. Adjustment of power and its depth must be at least 1/128.

If you are a beginner photographer, choose more versatile equipment. To find your creative path, you need to try everything: both portrait and product photography.

How to arrange the light in a photo studio: practical tips

In order to properly set up the lighting, you will need at least three sources - one for each basic type of installation. These include:

  • Fill lighting
    • It is necessary to remove sharp shadows. The device itself is installed behind the back of the photographer.
  • Key lighting
    • It gives shape and additional volume to the object (or model) being photographed. The light source is installed 1-1.5 meters from the subject and is turned in relation to the camera at an angle of 45 degrees. When setting it up, it is important to choose the right height: too high or low lighting will cast dark shadows. It is especially important to avoid this effect when shooting portraits - the shadows under the eyes distort the proportions and shape of the face. The optimal position for key lighting is just above the head of the model or the top point of the subject being shot.
  • back lighting
    • This type is used to highlight the contours of an object, giving them a light halo or glow. The device is installed behind the subject, on the same side as the key lighting at the same angle of 40-45 degrees

Additionally, you can highlight the background. This technique visually expands the space in the photo and gives it lightness. In addition, for any lighting device, you can choose a diffuser that will make the light more directed and softer. In general, there are many options for how to set up the light in the studio. Moreover, you can get by with a minimum of funds - even with two lighting fixtures, it is really possible to create several lighting options.

Another important point - it is important to decide what type of lighting to give preference. For creating simple compositions and shooting video, constant lighting is suitable, and for solving more complex tasks, pulsed light for photo studios (how to choose and set it up is a separate issue). To design a home studio, devices with a power of 250-500 watts will be enough.

Ready-made lighting kits: what is it and why is it a good option for a beginner

A set of studio equipment is a set of two or three light sources, a softbox (diffuser), tripods and additional accessories (filters, reflectors, and so on). They are well suited for organizing a home studio or for location shooting, and do not contain anything superfluous. At the same time, such kits are quite versatile, which will be a plus for a novice photographer. With their help, a beginner will fill his hand and figure out how lighting works in general when photographing in practice. And when the photographer "grows" out of the kit, it will be easier to make an informed choice of professional equipment - the accumulated experience will come to the rescue. In addition, using the kit will help avoid hardware compatibility issues.

Being able to set the light in a photo studio is a subtlety not accessible to everyone, and therefore, for beginners who do not have experience in equipping the studio with the necessary lighting fixtures, it is better to adhere to three basic principles when arranging their own corner for creativity:

  1. The choice of lighting fixtures for a photo studio with sufficient power.
  2. Focusing on the cost of lighting fixtures, based on their quality and their own needs.
  3. If possible, the choice of universal "light".

Of course, there simply cannot be any standard advice in this matter, recommendations can only be general, and everything else depends on what exactly the photographer wants.

For example, in order to equip a small photo studio, it is not at all necessary to select high-power lighting devices, however, you should not purchase frankly weak lighting either. For example, for a beginner in photography who starts working with studio equipment in his own apartment, it will be quite enough to buy an inexpensive lighting kit, while when you gain some experience and need to bring more serious ideas to life, the investment in equipment will also become more serious. . Experts know that the equipment of a photo studio is, according to all the rules, a very expensive undertaking, and therefore not every amateur will be able to shell out a round sum for suitable backgrounds, lighting fixtures and other devices necessary for artistic photography.

Does quality mean expensive?

It is important that the photographer knows how to navigate at least a little in the brands of lighting equipment for photo studios. It is no secret that the cost of some popular brands is frankly overpriced precisely because of the well-known name, and therefore, those who know the value of their money can be recommended to look for the necessary coverage among not so well-known, but in no way inferior brands. When choosing lighting equipment for photo studios, it is important to remember that it must be functional, in particular, the depth and power adjustment must be no less than 1/28.

A photographer who is just starting out in this field will always find it more convenient to work with universal equipment that will allow you to try everything at once, whether it is subject or portrait photography.

How to arrange the light in a photo studio according to all the rules?

Acquired lighting photo studio equipment you need to be able to correctly configure, for which you need to have at least three light sources, each of which works on the basic type of installation.

Fill lighting

It is used to eliminate the sharpness of shadows. For this purpose, the lighting device must be installed behind the photographer, directly behind him.

Key lighting

Installed in a special way, it is able to give the subject, whether it be an object or a model, additional volumes and a fuller shape. In order to ensure the correct operation of key lighting, the source is placed at a distance of 1-1.5 meters from the object being photographed, and also rotated 45 degrees in relation to the camera. When setting key lighting, it is necessary to choose its height correctly, since too low or, conversely, high light will cast dark shadows - this effect is extremely undesirable in principle, and for portrait photography it is completely destructive, since shadows under the eyes can significantly distort the shape face and even visually make it disproportionate.

Ideally placed key lighting is set slightly above the head of the model or, if the subject is an inanimate object, slightly above its top point.

back lighting

Such studio light for photography studio used to highlight the contours of the object, thereby giving them a kind of light halo. For this purpose, the lighting device is placed behind the subject, in the same place as the key lighting, and its angle is also approximately 40-45 degrees.

In addition, you can install additional background lighting, since this method of lighting will visually make the space in the photo a little wider, giving it some lightness. Experts recommend purchasing a diffuser for each lighting device, thanks to which the light will soften and become more directional. In general, there can be a lot of options for setting light in a photo studio, however, for a start, you can get by with a minimum amount of money - just two lighting fixtures can help create several options for proper lighting.

It is also important for any photographer to decide what type of lighting should be prioritized in each case. For example, to shoot videos or create a photo composition of a low level of complexity, constant lighting can be used, while for the realization of more complex ideas, a special flash light for professional photo studios may be required. Photo studio equipment organized at home can be much easier - it will be enough to purchase lighting equipment, the power of which will be from 250 to 500 watts.

What are ready-made sets of lighting equipment for photo studios?

A set of equipment for a photo studio usually consists of two or three light sources, which also come with additional accessories, tripods and diffusers. The purchase of such a set will be ideal for organizing a small photo studio at home or for filming on location, as they are quite compact and have everything you need to ensure high-quality shooting. A set of lighting equipment of this kind will allow a novice photographer to fill his hand and understand the principles of studio lighting, and also in the future, having already figured out all the intricacies of photography, already consciously approach the choice of expensive professional equipment.

A lot depends on the color temperature

When choosing a kit that includes several lighting fixtures at once, it is important to consider that they all must have the same color temperature. Otherwise, the finished pictures will acquire the most unexpected multi-colored effect. For example, the color temperature of halogen incandescent lamps designed specifically for photography is 3200 K, while for the same lamps used for household lighting, this parameter is 2800 K. If you use them simultaneously, then some areas of the object being photographed, on which will be affected by everyday light, will acquire a peculiar yellow tint with transitions to orange and, most likely, this effect will spoil the overall impression of the finished image.

For devices of the impulse type, a color temperature of 5500 K is typical, and if they are used together with ordinary lighting, then it is enough to use a flash or set the balance to the "sun" position so that a reddish tint appears in the photo in some areas. If the white balance is set to "halogen", then the places hit by the flash will become a pronounced blue color.

At the moment, among photographers, both professionals and amateurs, universal devices that use both halogen and flash lamps are very popular. Their uniqueness lies in the possibility of installing interchangeable nozzles if necessary, so that one device can be used both as a spotlight and as a source of diffused light.

? even the most experienced photographer, for sure, this will put him to a standstill. Reasoning will begin that is incomprehensible to a beginner: what, they say, are needed, four pieces, and then you need to look further, what to photograph - it depends on what to buy for use. And the pinnacle of reasoning can even be that it’s better to start, they say, in general with one illuminator. Having only one illuminator in his arsenal, a beginner will quickly figure it out, understand and decide what equipment for a photo studio and what kind of light he needs to buy, and how professionals generally handle studio light.

But many years of sales experience suggests that the requirements of beginners who want to join are simpler:

  • small, but sufficient power devices;
  • universality;
  • low price.

It is rare that someone will immediately say: “I will only do subject photography, and I am not interested in portraits.” Neophyte wants to try all kinds of studio photography. Which one to choose then? What to prefer - a set of pulsed light or constant? The main thing is to ask the right questions. So, the main questions that you need to answer yourself are as follows:

  • the size of the budget;
  • what kind of camera do you have?
  • How skilled are you?

The available budget will tell you which class of devices to choose, the quality and quantity of accessories. The camera, and the ability to use it, helps to determine which one to choose. - or . If the possession of photographic skills can be improved quickly enough, then changing the camera with a small budget is most often critical.

Let's look at the issue in more detail.

If you have a compact camera that “cannot” shoot in manual mode and does not have a hot shoe, then only constant light will suit you for shooting in the studio. Or, before, you will have to change the camera to a SLR. Do not look for workarounds, you will not coordinate the pulsed light with your soap dish. It will be torment!

If you do not yet know what shutter speed, aperture and manual mode are, you are quite satisfied that everything can be done on the camera with a single button - your choice, again, should be only constant light.

If the photographer's enthusiasm is enough to study the instructions for the DSLR, then you can already think - why not buy a studio light kit for a photo studio with a pulsed source?

And, of course, if you are an experienced user of your SLR camera, you know what exposure is and the word “stop” does not make you want to stop, but only the question “how many stops?”, Then all the ways of the studio tao are open to you!

If you cannot make a choice, you should contact the specialists of the Photogora store, here you will be given qualified advice by phone. Let's look at the basic properties of pulsed and constant light.

How to make a choice?

Today, there are two choices.

Firstly, the price / quality of studio lighting. In principle, as in any production, among the manufacturers of studio equipment there are: justifiably well-known brands; popular brands; there are new, little-known, but high-quality ones.

Secondly, an important factor is the functionality of the illuminators. From this point of view, there are also a lot of parameters that affect functionality. It suffices to give a simple example. The most famous parameter of any illuminator is power control. So even it does not happen with all devices, but this is one of the main parameters that helps the photographer to control the light. Whether it be pulsed light or constant. The presence of adjustment is a definite plus, but it is also necessary to pay attention to the depth of adjustment. On the simplest, amateur devices, you can often see the value of 1/8 of the full power, modern professional illuminators already have 1/128. And if 1/8 allows you to control the light within 4 apertures, then 1/128 up to 8 apertures.

That's why, even a seemingly powerful, but not adjustable, light source from a well-known manufacturer may not be much more interesting for working in a studio than a building spotlight.
