Belt manufacturing business plan. SoRoKo: How a married couple makes money on belts and why they placed a workshop in an apartment Manufacture of leather sandals at home business

Today, a delightful variety of leather accessories reigns on the shelves, but despite this, when it comes to finding a truly exclusive item, it turns out that most merchants offer a generic product.

Therefore, to find a stylish trouser belt, you need to make some efforts. As a result, the production of leather belts becomes an interesting and profitable business. Let's look into the intricacies of this business.

Enterprise Features

Many masters started their business with single orders performed at home. But if you decide to enter production facilities, then you will need to find a room for a full-fledged workshop. In it you will install the equipment necessary for the technological process. Here you will put a convenient table for cutting, place racks for blanks and material, accessories.

At first, a separate room in the apartment, a converted garage will do. You can rent a small room, then you will have where to place a corner for receiving customers and discussing orders with them.

In addition, you will have to resolve the issue of selling your products. Of course, you can continue to work on individual orders, but it is much more efficient to simultaneously launch the sale of products either through your own outlets or through intermediaries. Small boutiques, shops are happy to sell high-quality accessories. By the way, visitors to these very points in the future can become your loyal fans who want to get a model made according to an exclusive sketch.

We open the production of leather belts

Before opening your own workshop, register as a sole trader. At the same time, choose a suitable taxation system and register with the tax office. Thus, you will avoid possible claims from the inspection authorities.

We are looking for suppliers

Making your own leather is not an option. Also, do not purchase materials on the principle of "where and how you have to." To ensure that your belt production does not stand idle, get regular suppliers. It's easy to do. When choosing, pay attention to the reputation of the company, the quality of its raw materials, how well it adheres to delivery times. It is better to immediately discuss cooperation with companies involved in the supply of leather, accessories, blanks.

At the same time, please note that the skin is sold by suppliers not in sheets, but in skins. And how much a decimeter of skin costs depends largely on its type. Pork, goat, veal go for 10 or 50 rubles per decimeter. But more exotic species are much more expensive, where prices start at a hundred rubles.

quality material

A lot depends on the raw material, its characteristics, appearance. Even if the belt looks perfect on the outside, cheap material will have a negative impact on the wear of the product.

The most inexpensive models are made of pigskin. It gives a good result in terms of design, but the durability of such raw materials is lame. Therefore, craftsmen most often use pigskin to make the wrong side of the belt.

The most popular material is calf leather. The calf is very soft, looks amazing in the product, and lasts a long time. Sheepskin is slightly more valued.

But for the manufacture of expensive designer belts, goat skin is used. Soft and surprisingly plastic, it has an expressive color. However, products from it must be treated with care.

No less chic belts come out of ostrich leather. That's just the price of such exotics will also be impressive. An iguana, a stingray, a shark, a python will cost a pretty penny to the master, therefore it is better not to buy them in batches, but to take them to order to complete a specific model.

When purchasing materials for production, do not forget about high-quality fittings. Not only can a cheap plastic or metal buckle negate all the designer's efforts to create an exclusive belt, but on top of that, such decor tends to oxidize and shed. As a result, an expensive accessory will be damaged, and your reputation will suffer with it.

Semi-finished products

In order to save money, you can discuss with the supplier the option of purchasing already processed and cut semi-finished products. Such blanks for belts are strips of leather of a certain width and length. They can be put into action right away.

Belt technology

And now a little about the technology of the process. The finished product consists of three layers. The upper and the wrong side are made of leather, and in the middle there is a lining material. Sometimes masters exclude the lining. This is not considered a violation. But if you intend to conquer customers with really high-status expensive products, then make all three layers of genuine leather. So the accessory will serve the owner much longer.

All layers are stitched or glued together. In the combined version, they are glued and additionally stitched. The latest technology provides products with high strength. Then the accessories are artistically designed. Along with the decor, various embossing is often used.

The most expensive items (made to order) are handcrafted from start to finish. In other cases, it is necessary to mechanize processes to the maximum. Otherwise, the cost of belts will be too expensive, and production will become unprofitable very quickly.

Installing equipment

Getting by with primitive improvised tools will not work. You will have to automate the production of leather belts so that you can reach the required production volumes for sales. The equipment allows you to perform technological processes more efficiently, without a touch of handicraft.

So, you need to purchase:

  • automatic or manual press;
  • machine for installing rhinestones, jewelry;
  • machine for uniform and smooth rounding of edges;
  • cutting machine.

In addition, you will need a glue spreader that allows you to evenly apply the adhesive to the workpiece. In addition, purchase a device for embossing, cutting leather. You also need a sewing machine. It is better to take specialized models.

Of course, for the equipment it will be necessary to lay out an amount of about 150 thousand or more. But such equipment significantly saves time for the manufacture of the product and, therefore, quickly pays off.

Don't forget about the tools. Various types of knives, scissors, punches, vices, rulers and squares - without this, the production of leather belts simply cannot exist.

When choosing tools and units, give preference to those that have proven themselves as reliable assistants. Do not be overly stingy on this issue.

The same knives with replaceable blades will last you much longer. Professional equipment is much more expensive than household samples, but it is more durable, as it is specially designed for production loads.

Manufacturers of such devices usually strive to provide service to their customers. Therefore, in the event of a failure of a particular machine, you do not have to call specialists who can fix the problem. And it also makes no sense to buy spare parts or replacement parts on the side, it is better to take branded ones.

We select personnel

Undoubtedly, the number of personnel will depend on the planned production volumes. Leather belts will need to be produced in quantities that can cover the cost of purchasing materials, fittings and equipment. Plus, you will bear the cost of paying bills for electricity and rent (if you intend to rent a room). It is unlikely that one person will be able to cope with this task.

Better get an assistant. Of course, the second master must also have the necessary skills. Well, if you have the makings of a designer. Otherwise, you will have to involve an experienced artist in cooperation to create sketches.

If you decide to sell your products yourself through a retail outlet, you will have to additionally hire a sales assistant. Your profit will depend on his efforts. The more charming the seller, the more customers he can interest in your product, the faster you will recoup the funds invested in the business and start making a profit.

Certification Issues

No one obliges you to carry out the certification procedure. A leather belt is a product that does not require a license for its production.

But you yourself understand that buyers will want to see a document confirming the high quality and safety of the product. This will greatly increase the credibility of your potential customers.

Getting certified is easy. This service is provided by specialized centers located in almost all more or less large cities. You will need to deliver a sample of your products and a package with documentation to the center. After the examination, the certificate is in your hands.

As in any business, at first you will have to invest more than earn income. But with the growing number of customers who like your accessories, the business will gradually begin to gain momentum. Today, an increasing number of people tend to buy handmade piece goods. Therefore, it is in your power to meet the demand for exclusive unique products that emphasize the status of the owner.

  • Any stain removers or detergents have a detrimental effect on the skin, making it rough and brittle.
  • To soften the skin and make it more elastic, the front surface of the material can be treated with glycerin.
  • To connect individual parts, you can use special rivets, clips, threads.
  • If you need to make a seam, then it is better to use a sewing machine.
  • Choose the right gauge needles to avoid making too large holes in the skin.
  • If you want the product to be neat and stylish, use special tools, in particular, a punch, hole punch, tongs, stamps, a hammer and a vise.
  • It is better to cut out individual parts from leather on a dense surface; a cutting board is ideal for this.
  • You can decorate leather products with various accessories: sequins, beads, beads, rhinestones, metal clips, buttons, laces, etc.

Step by step description of the creative process:

DIY leather goods: ideas

Leather products have been popular since ancient times, but now they are especially in demand. After all, leather souvenirs are always associated with wealth, quality and even uniqueness. That is why you can organize your own business for the manufacture of various leather souvenirs.

Competition in this environment is quite high. But if souvenirs are made by hand, they always remain in value and are in demand due to their exclusivity. At the same time, large investments in starting a business are not required, more effort must be invested in the search for a proven and reliable master. And to achieve the desired profit, it is necessary to carry out active marketing activities.

Room for the manufacture of leather souvenirs.

For the manufacture of leather goods, it is necessary to choose a spacious, well-ventilated room. It is best to rent a workshop in an industrial area. The area will not be very large. 60 m2 is quite enough to territorially divide the area where the technological processes of making leather souvenirs will be carried out, raw materials and already manufactured products will also be stored.

Each master should have his own place with equipment. It is necessary to conveniently arrange the racks with finished products, as well as raw materials and materials. There are no special requirements for the equipment of the workplace, the main thing is that the craftsmen feel comfortable working.

It is good if the room is heated in the winter and normal operation of all communications is established in it. For renting a room of this type, you need to pay about $ 300 per month. Most often, the owner of the premises will require you to pay rent for half a year or even for all 12 months in advance.

Raw material.

The main raw material for the manufacture of leather souvenirs is genuine high-quality leather. This material must be pre-treated before use. Usually craftsmen who are engaged in the manufacture of leather products use already processed leather.

Since this procedure requires special equipment and is carried out in many countries of the world. And the craftsmen buy already fully prepared leather of a certain type (like, slime, calf, natural suede and others). Each individual product may require a specific type of leather. If you need to buy a small amount of raw materials, then it is most advantageous to do this in a specialized store, which is definitely in the major cities of our state.

Most often, the price of leather is set for 1 m2. There you can also purchase some details (rivets, clips, buttons, etc.), which allow you to complete the image of each souvenir. But if you plan to produce scanty volumes of products, then you can try to save a little on raw materials. You can contact the existing ateliers for tailoring and shoe factories and buy leftovers, pieces of leather from them. In total, it is necessary to allocate about $1.5 thousand for the purchase of raw materials.

Equipment and tools.

To work with leather, you need to purchase special tools:

1. Pipe string - $ 120;

2. Vise - $80;

3. Hole punch - $75;

4. French knife - $150;

5. A set of metal rulers - $100;

6. Professional self-sharpening scissors - $200;

7. Metal square - $ 25;

8. A set of knives (a knife for artwork, a utility knife, a circular knife, and others) - $ 450.

To perform high-quality and accurate work, you cannot save on tools and devices for working with leather elements. It is best to choose knives whose blades can be easily changed. You can even use tools that are meant for shoemaking or sewing.

You can buy all the tools both in specialized stores and order through the online store. In total, you need to focus on the amount of about $ 3-3.5 thousand.

Staff.

For the manufacture of leather souvenirs, it is necessary to invite leather craftsmen to work. You can find such craftsmen, but sometimes they require too high wages for their work. It is worth trying to hire 3-4 people who are ready to learn and one experienced craftsman who will have to pass on his craft to people. Alternatively, you can simply pay for the courses.

In addition, the workshop will require an experienced purchasing and sales manager in the industry. When negotiating wages, you can stop at a certain salary or make it piece-bonus. Everything will depend on the mutual consent of the employee and the employer. In addition to the masters and the manager, you will definitely need an accountant at the enterprise. In total, it is necessary to allocate about $6,000 for the remuneration of the working staff.

Marketing.

You can promote your own leather souvenirs both on the Internet and beyond. On the Internet, you can create your own website, constantly posting new manufactured products with prices for them. Each product must be professionally photographed. You may have to contact a photographer and even hire a studio for this. You can also create a group on social networks, constantly offer your products on the forums. You can also print advertisements in fashion magazines and newspapers.

Do not forget about the possibility of outdoor advertising. Signs should be placed in accessible areas. You can also take part in exhibitions and fairs. At the same time, you can participate in such events, both at the local level and at the regional, or even outside our state. In total, about $ 300 can be allocated for the marketing and promotion of your own leather souvenirs.

Basic costs.

Opening your own workshop for the manufacture of leather souvenirs will require the following basic expenses:

1. Room rental - $300;

2. Equipment and tools - 3-3.5 thousand $;

3. Personnel - 6 thousand $;

4. Raw materials - $1.5 thousand;

5. Marketing - $300.

In total, to start a business in this area, you must own an amount of at least $14,000-15,000.

Profit and payback period of the business.

It is difficult to predict the payback period, since the development and profit of this industry depends on many factors. In the first place is the beauty and quality of manufactured products, and in the second place is the marketing strategy and the cost of leather souvenirs. But, if we consider the most favorable atmosphere, then we can specify a period of up to one year. After all, all products will be made using manual labor. Therefore, the cost of those will be several times higher than factory crafts.

For example, the average price of a manufactured souvenir will be about $70, while the mark-up per copy will range from 200-300%. If 3 craftsmen work for you, and they make at least 10-15 souvenirs per day of average complexity, then the net profit will start from $ 1.5 thousand per day. You just need to figure out where to put the souvenirs and who to sell them to.

Clients and business development.

Leather souvenirs will be sold in regular and virtual outlets of souvenirs and gifts, clothing and accessories stores and others. It is worth developing a business by constantly expanding the range. On the territory of the workshop, you can open a school for training craftsmen to work with leather souvenirs. Ultimately, it is necessary to strive to open your own store for the sale of products.

Hi people!
I noticed that the theme of handmade leather minimalist wallets is on the rise. But they are a bit pricey. Prices start from 4 thousand in online stores.
Now I'm wintering in Thailand. After wandering around the local evening markets, I found a guy who makes leather goods. Bags, wallets, cases, something else. I showed him a photo of the wallet (travel, for 4 thousand) and asked how much it would cost. He said 400 baht (the same as rubles) and a day or two for production. Broke delivery - in the Russian Federation 200-300 rubles and about 2 weeks. Plus my money for organizing the process is another 400 rubles. Beautifully arrange, pack it for 30-40 rubles. Well, and another sesame candy for 10 rubles as a gift.
The total comes out: about 1000 rubles already with delivery to the client's door in the Russian Federation.

It turns out I find a client in Russia. I agree with him on the details. I pass it on to my craftsman. Packing. Forwarding. Here is such an algorithm.

People, it seems to me alone, or is this price in excess of adequate for Russia?

How do you think the topic will pop?

Nov 24, 2013

I think it will. Although I'm not from Russia, but I think it will roll in. How to present the main thing. Watching the range of leather accessories in Ukraine, you want to spit. Cheap - China, Expensive - Italy, etc. China is consumer goods (mostly), and Italy or some other expensive manufacturer, the quality is not bad, but stupidly overpaying for the brand. I also thought about starting with at least a small workshop, the only thing is to find a good master, familiar designers will also not interfere. In general, try it, everything will turn out! Good luck!

Beautiful products made of genuine leather have been in great demand for a long time, but they are gaining special popularity now. Of course, there are a large number of both foreign and domestic manufacturers, whose assortment includes leather accessories of various designs. However, they will never match the quality and originality of handicrafts.

The range of leather products that you can make is quite large. Until now, various jewelry and accessories using genuine leather have not lost their relevance: bags, belts, wallets, jewelry, clothes, shoes, binders for notebooks, books and magazines, etc.

The main methods of dressing genuine leather

The main raw material for the manufacture of such products is genuine leather, which has undergone preliminary processing. There are several main ways of tanning natural leather, among which are the following: raw leather (with minimal processing and preservation of the original qualities of the source material), rawhide (tanning is carried out without tanning), rawhide tanning (light tanning with alum), tanned leather (obtained as a result of fat tanning or with the addition of vegetable and artificial chemical tannins).

As a rule, craftsmen who are engaged in the manufacture of various leather products do not carry out independent leather dressing. This procedure is carried out at special leather enterprises in various countries of the world. Masters buy from them ready-made dressed leather of the following types: calciner, slipcase, outgrowth, nappa, chevro, husky, shagreen, morocco, natural suede, deerskin, saddlecloth, velor, napplak, shore, split-velor, yuft, parchment.

"1000 Ideas" - 1000 ways to stand out from the competition and make any business unique. Professional kit for developing business ideas. trending product 2019.

For each type of product, one or another type of leather is used. You can buy all the necessary materials in specialized stores that can be found in large cities. Masters who live in the region, far from the center, order them through online stores (including foreign ones), as well as in sewing ateliers. By the way, if you are engaged in the manufacture of small items - jewelry, toys, accessories, then you can significantly save on the purchase of raw materials by agreeing with local ateliers, who often sell leftovers and trimmings of large leather pieces at low prices. Often, for work (and even more so for training), leather products that have already gone out of fashion - old shoes, bags, outerwear - can be suitable. Such well-made leather goods can be found in second-hand stores at very low prices.

Determining the value of leather

When buying leather in specialized stores, its cost is indicated by the seller for 1 square decimeter. It is usually sold in whole pieces (skins or skins). The cost may vary, depending on the type of skin (calf, pig, goat), the characteristics and quality of dressing, the thickness of the skin, and ranges from 5 to 50 rubles per square decimeter. The skin of more exotic species of animals (for example, ostrich, crocodile, etc.) will cost an order of magnitude more - from one hundred rubles per square decimeter and more.

When calculating the cost of one product, take into account the fact that the area of \u200b\u200bthe smallest skin is at least 40 square decimeters. For this reason, for the manufacture of small items - jewelry, accessories and other things - it is unprofitable to purchase material with whole skins. And scraps of genuine leather can be purchased at the studio at a price of 100-200 rubles per kilogram. The total area of one kilogram of scraps is about 50-60 square decimeters.

What tools are required for working with leather

The list of the main ones includes scissors, knives, a wide and long metal ruler, a metal square, a French knife, a hole punch (punch), a vice, a clamp. Experts advise using special self-sharpening scissors for tailors. The following brands have proven themselves well: Scheren konig scissors, RTY-2 / DX Olfa knife, CK-2 Olfa utility knife, AK-1 / 5B Olfa art knife. In addition, you will need to purchase a circular knife and some other types of knives for special techniques and special types of products.

If possible, try not to save on tools, because the quality of your finished work will directly depend on them. Experts recommend using knives with interchangeable blades, and not with solid ones, since the first option is more profitable.

Some of the necessary tools can be purchased at ordinary hardware stores, and some can be purchased at specialized online stores that usually deliver orders throughout the country. If you are still just learning and are not sure that making genuine leather products will become not just a hobby, but the basis for your business, then you can get by with less investment and use stationery and shoe knives for work, the cost of which is an order of magnitude lower than special expensive tools. However, there are also disadvantages: when working with leather, the blades of stationery knives have to be changed more often, and shoe knives require frequent sharpening, so using them for a long time is not so profitable.

Each tool from the above list has its purpose. For example, using a wide long metal ruler and a metal square, you can cut off the required amount of material as evenly and safely as possible for your own fingers. A French knife is used to cut (thin) the skin.

Since grinding is a very laborious procedure, it takes a lot of time and effort, therefore, usually the skin for such processing is tried to acquire the required thickness. The vise allows you to fix the product in the desired position during operation. Using a clamp, several large parts are clamped when gluing. If you plan to make bags and other large items, it is best to purchase several clamps at once.

If you are a beginner in this field and did not have much experience in working with leather and making leather products, then it is better to consult with professionals in advance, before going for tools, read specialized literature and articles on thematic resources on the Internet. This preparation can save you a lot of money. For example, for working with leather, you can purchase inexpensive and fairly high-quality Stayer or Legioner hole punches, rather than special expensive models. They are sold in construction and sewing stores, as well as where a variety of goods for creativity are sold.

How to start a leather goods business

You can do handmade leather products at home. The main thing is that you have at your disposal a fairly spacious and well-ventilated (which is important when working with adhesives) room where you can conveniently place a desktop, equipment, racks with materials and finished products. There are no special requirements for workplace equipment. The main thing is that it is comfortable for you. Any wide, stable table is suitable for work.

But you need to take into account that when cutting and cutting parts for a product, the surface on which the material is laid out must be non-slip (otherwise the skin will constantly move out and you will not be able to carefully cut out the parts), solid (so that the knife does not get stuck in the base) and not textured. If you are working on a wooden tabletop, then you first need to cover it with a piece of linoleum, hardboard, plexiglass, or at least a plastic kitchen board or a plasticine modeling board (for small items), otherwise the knife will constantly “go astray” when cutting the skin and go along the wood fiber.

In addition to the skin itself and tools, you may also need various additional elements and materials - accessories (and equipment for its installation), paints, varnishes, etc. The exact list depends on the model and your imagination.

Ready-made ideas for your business

To begin with, it is better to choose such products for the manufacture of which do not require a lot of time: belts, simple jewelry and plain accessories. Then, when you get your hands on it, find your own style and choose the work technique that suits you, you can take a swing at more complex projects. However, think ahead about the pricing system for your products. It is obvious that difficult to manufacture and exclusive handmade items will cost an order of magnitude more expensive than industrial goods. On the other hand, you need to rationally evaluate the level of your work and your skill. Experienced craftsmen advise novice entrepreneurs to set a small margin on their work made for sale. As a rule, the calculation is given according to the scheme: the cost of materials plus 10-25% on top.

So you can learn for the first time, recoup the cost of materials and accessories, and at least slightly compensate for your efforts. In the case of products of a higher level of performance, the following scheme is usually used: the cost of the finished product plus 150-200% on top. Of course, this rule can change, because a lot depends on how much time and effort went into the work, how original it is, whether you have already earned your own name (or rather, whether your name as a master has become a kind of brand).

Where to distribute leather products

You can search for the first and subsequent buyers both on the Internet and beyond. In the first case, experienced entrepreneurs advise you to create accounts in the most famous social networks and be sure to make your own website. You should also not ignore resources such as Etsy, the Craft Fair, etc. They may not become the main sales channel, but being on them will help you make your brand more recognizable. An important role (although often underestimated) is played by high-quality and beautiful photographs of your products. It is impossible to sell an expensive thing with a bad photo taken on a soap dish. To do this, you do not need to seek the help of a professional photographer. A good camera and thoughtful surroundings are enough to emphasize all the advantages of your product.

In addition, handmade genuine leather products are sold through regular, offline shops of souvenirs and gifts, accessories, clothes, etc. Think in advance whether you will take orders or sell ready-made items. In the first case, you can increase your profits, but this option is associated with certain risks, especially if you do not take an advance payment from the customer.

Ready-made ideas for your business

The genuine leather business is profitable and has little seasonality (leather bags, belts, jewelry and accessories are generally in demand all year round). About 30-50 thousand rubles will be required for the purchase of material, accessories and tools, as well as for training. But you can get by with less investment at the first stage if you have experience in this area and an additional source of income for the first six months.

Leather bags and accessories in a Moscow apartment. They earn half as much as when they worked in the office, and they work twice as much. “It is much more pleasant than performing the tasks prescribed in the contract,” the entrepreneurs assure. The plans are to expand production, hire seamstresses and go on a long-awaited vacation.

money on patriotism

In 2014, when the West and Russia were exchanging sanctions, Nikita and Katerina played on the patriotic trend. They launched the website yarussky.com and agreed with manufacturers of T-shirts, mugs and souvenirs that they would sell their goods at a small markup. The first batch of T-shirts with reproductions of paintings by Russian artists sold out with a bang, and Katya, inspired by the success, ordered several dozen muffs from the garment industry.

The fashion for them returned, and we planned to earn more on this, - the girl recalls. - But the batch was sewn so crooked and askew that it was a shame even to sell. Those clutches are still lying around in the garage.

The "patriotic" online store brought in little income, but the couple's interest in the "buy and sell" business quickly faded.

Tired of money out of thin air. I wanted to do something with my own hands, to produce, - explains Nikita.

selfish interest

Then the entrepreneurs analyzed all the trends and, having sorted through the options, settled on the idea of sewing leather goods. To understand whether it is possible to learn leather craft from scratch, Nikita went to a master class, from where he brought a belt and a bracelet that he made with his own hands.

Inspired, Nikita and Katerina attacked libraries and YouTube: they read Soviet books about leather production, watched videos on how to sew wallets, belts and bags at home. The videos in Japanese turned out to be the most useful: Katya found a video with English subtitles, and her education as an interpreter already helped there.

In order not to overpay, Nikita decided to buy equipment from his hands: “At lunch, colleagues discussed what movie they watched on the weekend, and at that time I was wooling Avito.” A new lock-stitch sewing machine cost 50,000 rubles. For the rest of the equipment, they spent a total of about 350,000 rubles - 130,000 less than if they bought a new one.

Another 10,000 rubles were spent on the purchase of four skins and accessories for a test batch of accessories. The skin was bought from Moscow dealers, which were found on the Internet - they did not even count on cooperation with factories that trade in large quantities. On this, the starting costs of tanners ended.

Production was placed with Nikita: he had just taken a mortgage on a room in the "kopeck piece" at the River Station. Nikita was appointed chief tailor.

Leather is a heavy material, and to work with it, you need physical strength. And I was also afraid of these terrible cars, I thought that I would ruin everything right away, - says Katya. - If an incorrectly tailored dress can be torn open and redone, then due to an extra puncture on the skin, the entire cut must be thrown away.

We produce things from leather and teach those who wish the basics of leather craftsmanship. Nikita came to one of these master classes two years ago. As he says, this is how the SoRoKo workshop began. It is nice to see that the seeds we have sown are producing such noble shoots.

Leather economy

We trained on trifles: we sewed cardholders and purses, which were sold to friends and acquaintances. Having stuffed their hands, Nikita and Katya put the goods up for sale on social networks. Best of all, they bought small handbags made of leather of different colors - 4 pilot copies left in a day, orders for another 10 pieces were received by the end of the week.

With the design, we decided not to be smarter and settled on the classics. “I found an old Valentino bag at home - it belonged to my grandmother and looks modern at the same time,” recalls Katya. Entrepreneurs took this model as the basis for the production of the first line of bags.

The mark-up on “little things” like a purse, and on the most technically complex product - backpacks - reaches 100%. Thus, a backpack worth 10,000 rubles, which takes 3-4 hours to make, brings entrepreneurs up to 5,000 rubles in income. The cost of a purse does not exceed 1,200 rubles, and at retail they are sold for 2,200–3,300 rubles. A dozen purses Nikita and Katya sew together in 8-10 hours.

The classics were diluted with a harness - a women's accessory in the form of a leather strapping belt. Katya was told about him by a friend who made a splash by appearing in a sword belt at the board of directors in a bank.

Nikita didn’t understand at all what kind of thing this was, and was against it, but I decided to try it, ”recalls Tsmokilina. - The product turned out to be so popular that all autumn and winter I felt like a slave to these belts: I sewed 5-6 pieces a day, and they all scattered.

Photo courtesy of SoRoKo (photographer: Andrey Pavlov)

Katya spends 30–40 minutes on one harness, the price of materials does not exceed 500 rubles, and accessories cost 2,000 rubles at retail.

In parallel, entrepreneurs have established sales through partner stores. “It was not easy to come to an agreement: some wanted a discount of 60-70% of the retail price, while they took it only for sale, they didn’t want to redeem it. Or they made a mark-up of 300%, and our backpack for 7,500 rubles cost them 18-20 thousand, ”recalls Nikita. Now SoRoKo has 4 distributors in Moscow: these are online and offline stores selling leather. Nikita and Katya sell products to them in bulk, and they wind up "as much as their conscience allows." The price of SoRoKo backpacks in such outlets reaches 15,000 rubles. “And sometimes they buy even better than on our website or in social networks,” Nikita wonders. The workshop sells 30% of products through partners, the remaining 70% through SoRoKo pages and its own social media accounts.

Demand throughout the year obeys the classic laws of retail: in December, February and March - the peak of sales, in January and summer, when Muscovites leave the city, demand is reduced by 30-50%. At this time, corporate orders are saved, which also fall on disastrous months. One batch of gifts brings up to 25,000 rubles of net profit. “I love such orders very much - you do the same things for several days in a row, one after the other, it's like a mantra,” says Katya.

Now the backbone of the SoRoKo audience is working girls aged 25–30. “We thought that we would be bought mainly by hipsters. But unfortunately, they have not appreciated us yet,” Nikita admits. He considers the same small leather workshops as competitors. SoRoKo is not going to compete with large factories: this is a completely different market.

The workshops work with the subculture, with those who do not need the mass market. We consider ourselves artists, and rivalry with factories is like a struggle between a man and a machine: the possibilities are different, but the final product is completely different.

Not a craft, but a business

When things started to flow, the entrepreneurs decided to move production from the room to a separate site. The premises were found by chance: Nikita received an email with an offer to rent a pavilion at VDNKh. “At first I thought it was spam. Then he decided not to answer - he assumed that renting at VDNKh costs a lot of money. But it turned out that they were asking for 16,000 rubles for a space of 20 m². So in August 2016, the SoRoKo workshop moved to the pavilion of the Crafts Park at VDNKh.

Entrepreneurs were delighted with the dense flow of passers-by, but quickly realized that they would not be able to use the traffic. Most of the companies that inhabited the Park made good money on master classes. The tanners also decided to try it, but only three people bought tickets for a harness-making lesson worth 3,000 rubles.

I worked with these three girls for 2.5 hours. During this time, the two of us with Nikita could sew a batch of these belts and another backpack, earning much more, - says Katya. - Then we realized that we were not artisans, but businessmen.

Oil was added to the fire by people who constantly entered the pavilion without knocking and interfered with the work. And the repair that began at VDNKh finally convinced the entrepreneurs that it was time to move out. While the workshop consists of only two founders, they decided to place the production in Katya's three-room apartment. “Yes, I was lucky with the girl,” Nikita from Syktyvkar laughs. The neighbors do not complain yet: all the equipment is modern and quiet. I had to isolate only the table with a hammer and a punch - the guys put the skin on a special plate upholstered with felt, and the table itself was placed on rubber carpets.

By the time of the publication of this material, the workshop's revenue is 200-250 thousand rubles a month, profit - from 90 to 120 thousand.

Nikita and Katya are planning to expand their business: hire several seamstresses, rent premises for production and increase turnover. This will make it possible to purchase large batches of skins from manufacturing plants, and not from resellers, as it is now, and to reduce retail prices. And even later, entrepreneurs want to develop a line of products from different materials: leather, wood and metal. “You can learn everything,” say SoRoKo.

Maxim and Evgenia Lavrik

founders of the KAZA workshop, Krasnodar:

The production of leather goods cannot be called a super-profitable business at the moment. Partly because of the crisis and the euro. We order most of the fittings for foreign currency, the factories themselves use foreign-made dyes. We continue to work thanks to our regular customers: we have been on the market for the 8th year and during this time we have gathered a large group of friends. But the development of production has so far had to be suspended in order to survive these difficult times.
