At the end of the review - a few tips from my own experience.

  • When comparing prices for coworking, pay attention to whether the cost includes supplies and storage space for a project that takes more than one day to work on. As a rule, you need to pay for this separately.
  • Don't neglect masterclasses. This format is perfect if you don’t know what to do, but you want to get acquainted with carpentry.
  • Follow the schedule of open days and free master classes, this is a good reason to go to the workshop, get to know each other and see if you are comfortable there.
  • Don't forget about safety! You will definitely be instructed on the spot, but you should take care in advance that your clothes are comfortable and not too loose, and that there is an elastic band in your pocket to collect long hair. And yes, do not neglect safety glasses, even if you see that the master is working without them. Take care of your eyes.

Public carpentry workshop "DIY Academy"
One of the first creative clusters in Moscow

Roman Bondarev - that manual labor is back in fashion

Many residents of a big city would like to do something with their own hands from time to time. And many craftsmen working with wood or metal would like to start their own production. Most of them cannot do this due to the lack of equipment and a workshop. But there is a way out - to go to a public workshop and organize your production there. So, the Moscow carpentry coworking "Dar Truda" offers workshops with all the necessary infrastructure to everyone. Roman Bondarev, a resident of the Gift of Labor, spoke about why manual labor is back in fashion.

38 years old, resident and coordinator for the development of the Moscow public workshop. In 2001 he graduated from Moscow State Technical University MAMI with a degree in design engineer. He worked as a car journalist, in 2012 he created his furniture project SitUp, took up carpentry and became a regular client of a public workshop, and later an employee. Founders and co-owners of the project "Gift of Labor" - Konstantin Skvortsov and Oleg Farajullaev.

From computer to machine

The idea to create a public workshop belongs to graphic designer Konstantin Skvortsov. In 2005, a USU graduate realized that he no longer wanted to sit in front of a computer, but wanted to work with his hands. First, Konstantin got a job at a construction site, where he went from a handyman to a foreman, and later he seriously took up carpentry. At that moment, he collaborated with an unusual for that time Moscow store called Lost and Found, which sold goods from master artisans.

Konstantin thought that there could be more such craftsmen if they had the opportunity to work somewhere and sell their products somewhere. And in general, most residents of a big city sooner or later face one problem - if you need to repair or make something at home, then it is extremely difficult to do it. Lack of free space, lack of knowledge and skills, lack of necessary tools (and even more so - serious equipment), the inability to make noise at late hours, etc.

So Konstantin Skvortsov came up with the idea to open a public workshop where anyone could come to spend a few hours there and do something with their own hands. Konstantin nurtured this idea for several years and once shared it with his classmate Oleg Farajullaev, at that time the owner of a logistics company, who was in search of a new promising market niche. Having written down, as it seemed to them then, a completely feasible business plan, they decided to open such an institution in Moscow.

They began to bring the idea to life in September 2012, and already in October, the public workshop “Dvor Sotrudney” was opened, located in the very center of Moscow, not far from Chistye Prudy, in the basement of one of the courtyards of Milyutinsky Lane.

From the very beginning, the Founding Fathers were supported by a group of like-minded people, most of whom worked as volunteers. Many came as clients to do something for themselves and leave, but were so taken with the idea of a community workshop that they stayed on the project, and some even changed their line of work to do so.

The room in a 200-meter basement, huge for us at that time, turned out to be a former carpentry, or rather, part of a restoration workshop. From her, we inherited some equipment that was extremely valuable to us at that time. We rented a room 30 meters away and started working. In less than six months, we were already occupying 90 meters there.

Initially, about 500,000 rubles were invested in the project, which were taken from the personal savings of Oleg and Konstantin. Half of this money was spent on carpentry equipment, the other half on renting premises in the first months of operation. 3 months after the opening, we were able to reach operating zero, and further investment was carried out from the incoming profit.

Noise and dust - without restrictions!

Initially, only the simplest carpentry work could be done in a public workshop. The main machine was a stationary circular saw with self-made guides and a removable carriage. When the carriage was installed to cut, for example, a sheet of plywood, all other work had to be stopped, and everything was removed from the workbenches to the floor - there was not enough space.

We also had a miter saw, a drilling machine, a band saw and a small thickness gauge. And, of course, several sets of basic mechanical and power tools. For a person who first got into the carpentry, more than enough. Most importantly, you could make noise and dust as much as you like!

There was simply nowhere to install something new, therefore, we can say that in the first two years - before the move - we basically debugged the mechanism of the public workshop. I had to rethink many points and abandon many ideas that seemed unshakable at first.

We understood how to build work with clients, what an administrator should be like and what he should do, how best to equip the workshop, what tariffs should be and what services are expected from us in the first place. All these are very important elements, and the fact that our “run-in” took place in an extremely compressed (in terms of space) form has become an incredible boon for us - if we started right away on a large site, all this would require colossal, simply unbearable funds and efforts.

Packing suitcases

Soon the inevitability of the move became obvious to everyone. When at some point three relatively large (for that level of ours) projects simply “stuck” in the workshop, which needed to be worked on simultaneously, it became clear that “it’s no longer possible to live like this.” The craftsmen had to literally meander between other people's details, and it was possible to do something only in turn. If something had to be taken out, it turned into a complex logistical operation.

The steep narrow staircase leading to our basement did not add to the convenience. In addition, there was virtually no separate painting room (always combining various other functions), and the neighboring ceramic workshop increasingly expressed dissatisfaction with noise and dust. The limit of patience was reached and, having looked at two or three places within one week, Konstantin made a strong-willed decision: we are moving!

Having moved in December 2014 from a cramped basement to the NIIDAR workshops on Preobrazhenka, we increased the total area by 3.5 times - up to 320 square meters. Since January 2016, our area has already been 760 square meters, and now, in 2017, we occupy a total of about 1,000 square meters.

During 2015, we practically did not stop the work of the coworking space, settling in a new place, gradually purchasing additional equipment and looking around in search of new opportunities. First of all, a medium-sized panel saw was purchased. Further, other saws, thickness gauges, jointers and other machines were systematically bought.

In January 2016, we received a subsidy under the program of the Center for Youth Innovative Creativity. This allowed us to expand our sites and purchase serious equipment - new laser and CNC milling machines, as well as a number of carpentry equipment and machines for working with metal that were previously inaccessible to us. Also, at the request of the CMIT program, we purchased non-core equipment for ourselves - a 3D scanner and a 3D printer, which are designed for prototyping small objects. An important step was the addition of a light second floor in the main workshop of the coworking space. This made it possible to optimally distribute the functional areas of the public workshop.

At the end of 2016, we expanded a little more - we rented a separate room for our training center, the classes of which were previously held exclusively in the coworking area. Now educational activities can be carried out separately.

Who and why comes to the workshop

Both experienced craftsmen and beginners can work with us. For example, now a person who wants to learn how to do something with his own hands on his legal day off can come to us for an entry-level “carpentry” class, we call it “The Way of the Master”. Some do something and disappear forever. And someone comes back and becomes our coworker.

A more advanced option is when a person comes who has a specific idea, but does not understand how it can be implemented. We help him in this, the result can also be different.

People come with some kind of carpentry experience, or theoretical knowledge, who need to make something, but nowhere and nothing. They can immediately become coworking customers, additionally learning certain things, for example, working on machines.

Another type of client is experienced carpenters who have their own orders and are looking for a more convenient place to work. Judging by the fact that the number of such residents is not decreasing, we offer them very favorable conditions.

The workshop also accepts and performs (often by resident masters) a wide variety of carpentry and near-carpentry orders. This is the theme of the emergence of all sorts of symbioses of cooperation and the crossing of technologies, skills and creative impulses.

Renting a workplace in the workshop "Gift of Labor" for an hour costs 300 rubles, for a day - 1300 rubles, for a month - 8000 rubles

The most popular tariff is a monthly subscription. That is, a person comes, pays 8,000 rubles and uses the services of the workshop for a month without a time limit. There are also monthly rates for professionals: "Master" - 17,000 rubles (with access to the workshop for up to two people and a personal cell of 7 "squares") and "Pro" (3 people and a cell of 12 square meters).

With those who wish not only to work, but also to teach others on a regular basis, our training center has a contractual relationship. But in general, in carpentry coworking, as in any other, mutual learning occurs during communication, according to the most beneficial principle for everyone - do good to others, in a difficult moment they will help you too.

At the moment, we do not have a single training program or any long course (except, perhaps, a course on working with a drill machine), basically all classes are one-time and are classified as master classes (although in fact they are more like workshops , but for some reason this concept is less popular with us, apparently because of its “foreignness”). Such classes last a day or two days, one lesson lasts an average of 2-3 hours. Now about 80 people pass through the training center "Dar Truda" on average per month.

Why did people reach out to carpentry and other workshops? It seems to me that this is due to a return to the roots, the spiral has turned around - we have outgrown the fashion for "working in the office" and are gradually outgrowing the fashion for constant consumption in the absence of creation. People are beginning to understand that sitting all day in a chair is harmful, not seeing the material result of their work is at least insulting, and the prospect of not being able to answer the grandchildren’s question “Grandfather, what did you do useful in your life?” just destructive.

Yes, this is from the “plant a tree, build a house and raise a son” series. In addition, the era of crisis always naturally leads to the growth of two processes: the birth rate and the search for more profitable offers. It is believed (although this is actually not true) that making something yourself is much cheaper than buying the same thing in a store. By the way, these are all global processes, because DIY is now popular all over the world.

We have never specifically conducted any PR campaigns, and even more so - advertising campaigns. Sometimes we post an advertisement for renting workplaces on Avito, but in less than a week we remove it, because the empty places fill up immediately. In general, our main advertising tool is word of mouth, and you can't think of anything better.

The most basic cost in our business is the rent of premises. There were also quite significant costs for the purchase of equipment, but these were one-time expenses, now there is no need to invest heavily in machines and tools.

A little more than 15 people are involved in the project: two co-founders, three coworking administrators, two equipment repair technicians, the head of the training center, three people each in the laser and milling shops, a couple of permanent volunteers and ... me, Roman Bondarev.

I am the oldest resident of the public workshop, I got into it two weeks after the opening. From the very beginning of our interaction, he actively participated in most of the formation and development processes, was the first administrator of the coworking space. Now I combine the functions of a public relations specialist, a copywriter, in a sense a designer, sometimes a meeting moderator, a curator of some areas and a participant in most events, as well as a “workshop thermometer” - being a 100% insider, I track public moods. In addition, I am engaged in my own carpentry activities - I carry out various orders, as well as develop personal craft and production projects.

Development plans are grandiose. They include the opening of a franchise project, a significant expansion of space, new areas of activity, and the creation of a handicraft cluster. But it is too early to talk about this in detail.
