You can find and recover an unsaved document created in Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint using the autosave feature. In order to prevent a software failure or careless movement from causing data loss, you need to activate the "Autosave every ..." and "Keep the last autosaved version if the file was closed without saving" options.

There are several ways to recover an unsaved document: automatically, after a crash, reverting to the latest version, from a save folder, by searching for temporary files, or using the Perfect File Recovery utility.

Automatic recovery

In order to restore a document after a program crash or due to a power outage, you must:

  • Restart the computer and run the Microsoft Office program that was used to create the unsaved document;
  • On the left side, view a request for all unsaved files;
  • Select the desired file and save it.

If after starting the Microsoft Office program did not prompt you to restore unsaved files, then you need to go to the "File" tab, then select the "Recent Files" item and click the "Recover Unsaved Documents", "Recover Unsaved Books" or "Restore Unsaved Presentations" button. Latest file version

If the file was closed without saving, then to restore its latest version, you must:

Save folder

Setting the autosave feature

Select an item Preservation on the menu Options tabs File.

Check box Autosave every x min. Instead of X set the desired autosave interval. The lower the number you set, the more often the document will be saved and the higher the chance of always having the latest version of the file at hand.

In Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, check the box Keep last autosaved version when closing without saving.

In the yellow bar at the top of the file, select the command Save as to save the file.
