Ilgiz Musin, a 22-year-old student at the Moscow Engineering University (MAMI), started working part-time from the 3rd year. Last summer, he got a job as a courier for the Sushi Wok company - then in just one month he managed to earn about 50,000 rubles. True, I had to work seven days a week, 13 hours a day, Musin recalls. Since this year, the young man has been working with not one, but several employers, taking orders through the YouDo.com online personal services service, which is popular among young people. Of the 85,000 performers registered on the site, about 20% are students; in July, compared to March, there were 3,000 more of them, says Denis Kutergin, one of the founders of the service.

Musin has 561 completed tasks: the student glued wallpaper, repaired mobile phones, delivered fire extinguishers. But I decided to stop at courier services. “This is the most extensive section of the service, there is always the opportunity to earn at least 25,000–30,000 rubles. per month,” says Musin. According to him, 3–4 completed tasks per day bring 1,500–2,000 rubles. Money is paid immediately, on the day of the order, for a student living away from his parents (Musin came from Bashkiria), this is a great help, he believes.

There are about 4.7 million students in public and private universities in Russia (Rosstat data as of January 1, 2016). This is a huge workforce that employers could take advantage of in the summer, when students are on vacation and would be happy to keep themselves busy with something useful. Vedomosti decided to find out how willingly companies are hiring young people (outside of internships) and what salaries they are willing to pay.

Where are students taken?

In summer, the need for additional staff at restaurants and cafes is especially great. “When summer cafes open, we conduct an additional recruitment, open about 350 new vacancies,” says Andrey Tumanov, HR director of the Rosinter restaurant holding. Students mainly work as waiters and hostesses (in restaurants, the hostess meets guests, escorts them to the table and offers menus). The salary of waiters of the Rosinter network consists of the minimum wage and tips. On average, they earn from 50,000 rubles. per month, says Tumanov. Students, according to him, are the largest category of the holding's staff: they are almost half of the total number of employees, which is 3,500 people.

Students can also find work during the summer holidays in the banking sector, representatives of financial organizations assure. According to Olga Sidelnikova, deputy director of the Human Resources Department at Home Credit Bank, young people without special skills and experience can work as call center operators, loan officers or tellers. Someone even gets a job at the head office - for example, as a CRM (customer relationship management system) analyst, says Sidelnikova. She declined to explain what salaries students receive.

Summer is the peak season for breweries, says Svetlana Davidyuk, production and logistics personnel manager at Sun Inbev. At this time, the need for loaders, packaging production operators, forklift drivers, and storekeepers is especially growing, she notes. Their number varies depending on the plant and its capacity: at the Omsk plant, for example, more than 40 additional jobs appear in the summer. The company is ready to take on senior students and pay them the same salary as regular employees, but few young people are interested in such vacancies, Davidyuk complains. But representatives of other brewing companies admit that they are reluctant to recruit students as temporary staff. The young and inexperienced are not the most desirable candidates even for the hard jobs associated with production: they need to be trained in safety and how to work with expensive modern equipment. “We do not accept students for the summer months in production, as special training is required,” says Anna Markina, external communications manager for Heineken in Russia.

“On average, from 3 to 13 temporary jobs are opened at one of our plants - their number depends on the region and production volumes,” says Nadezhda Roguleva, a representative of PepsiCo Russia, Ukraine and the CIS. Basically, these are warehouse positions - loaders and order pickers. They are ready to accept all students - regardless of the university and faculty, but preference is still given to part-time students, since the season at PepsiCo factories lasts from May to October and does not coincide with the vacation of full-time students. PepsiCo is also ready to offer the job of traveling sales representatives to novice specialists. The main requirement is the presence of a driver's license and driving experience. According to Roguleva, in temporary positions, students can earn an average of 20,000 to 35,000 rubles. per month.

In the summer, Euroset recruits 30% more staff for communication stores than at other times, says Elena Korol, HR director of the company. They begin looking for employees in April so that they can complete mandatory training before going to work. Students are mostly employed as sales assistants or cashiers. A shortened training program has been developed for them this year: standard training in the company lasts from 14 to 18 days, and candidates from universities master the basics of sales techniques and work at the checkout in three days, after which they go to work in salons. The salaries of temporary employees are no different from those of permanent workers, says Korol. On average, they can earn more than 35,000 rubles. per month.

The student’s income is affected by the complexity of the work (if, for example, knowledge of foreign languages ​​or skills in working in non-standard computer programs are required), the length of the working day and the generosity of the employer, comments Albina Nanumyan, head of the Freework project implementation group at the Ankor personnel holding. During the summer month, with an 8–12-hour working day, a student can earn from 15,000 to 40,000 rubles, the expert says.

Didn't wait

During the navigation period, the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant sends part of its products by water, and at this time it needs about 20 additional people - mainly helmsmen and mechanics of the vessel, says Maya Naumova, manager of the personnel recruitment and development department at Severstal. According to her, it is impossible to hire students for these jobs, since candidates are required not only certain skills, but also permits: minders and helmsmen must have special qualification certificates, and ship electricians must have the 4th electrical safety group.

When the demand for soft drinks rises, the supply volumes increase and there are additional vacancies for forwarding drivers, and they must have a truck driver's license. Students, as a rule, do not have such rights, says Lilia Strokina, head of the recruitment team in Moscow at Coca-Cola HBC Russia. According to her, in the summer the company can recruit temporary specialists in office divisions, for example, in the financial department (document flow also grows during the season), but students are not needed here either: candidates must have a completed higher education.

During periods of peak workload, students are willingly hired to work in retail chains, but most often for simple operations: product labeling, packaging, cleaning the trading floor, transferring goods from utility rooms to the hall, says Yulia Kapitanchuk, partner at the Step consulting center. Any salesperson must work to standards, and it's impossible to teach them in a short time, she explains.

Employers are afraid that they will have to restructure work processes for students, Roman Shkut, director of the Youth Employment Center in Moscow, shares his observations, everyone needs a mentor. Instrument-making factories and enterprises for the production of electronics will not take students even as laboratory assistants or laborers - experienced and responsible specialists are needed, Shkut explains.
